So,

1. as per Paul's post, we dont know if a vaccinated person can potentially shed Covid if they were exposed to it after vaxxing?

2. If they are 95% effective, does that mean that the 5% will be older, existing conditions people? Or can they be any 5% that for some reason the vaccine just isnt very effective?

Regardless of the answers to those questions about individuals, if a vaccine reduces the R value/spread in a community enough, then the person who would otherwise have infected them, won't be infected.

(ps not sure if this is mentioned earlier in the thread)

Another "crash-and-burn" test of cruise ships. I can't say I feel sorry for the cruise industry, but I'm not their target traveler.

1) is not really that well known. We do know what some people don't (appear to at least) shed the virus once they have it, while others are super spreaders. The common belief across many of the vaccine candidates is that some people may still spread viral debris if they are exposed after they have been vaccinated. Some people are continuing to spread viral debris months after being infected even without a vaccine, such as in Melbourne weren't they're still seeing it in wastewater despite not having cases and nobody really knows why.

2) Vaccine efficacy is not the same as effectiveness. Their 95% efficacy figure means that in their randomomised study that 5% of people who had the vaccine contracted Covid. It is likely that those who get ill still could potentially be the older and those with weak immune systems, which is no different to those who catch influenza despite having had an influenza vaccine (which actually has a pretty poor real world level of effectiveness and can be around 50% depending on the year).

Thanks. It does seem that the vaccine is not a fix but just a tool. So the virus will still spread quite happily, but theoretically just have a 1/20th of the population to work with. Vaccine prior to travel is similarly a risk, again where we know that travel will spread it, but just among the "5%" I also read that the trials dont represnt real world demographics, and it excludes vaccinated but still got infected but was asymptomatic, they weren't tested and counted. Testing and counting was just those that developed symptoms. If those that are vaccinated but still catch it, perhaps the disease will be far less serious, which could be counted as a win.

We don't usually watch live TV but on testing some recording feature on a new TV we watched some ads - including one for a cruise in 2022...

Hope not. It refers to people that carry an EpiPen in article. I’ve never had an asthma attack from injection, it’s normally triggered from what is breathed in.

"Covid-19 coronavirus: Wellington officially virus-free again"

Wellington is officially free of Covid-19 after the last remaining cases linked to the Defence Force cluster recovered on Tuesday.

Keep scanning those QR codes folks, and update the app for Bluetooth tracking now.

They mention this:

"adrenaline autoinjectors, suggesting they have suffered reactions in the past. These devices, of which the best-known brand is the EpiPen"

So maybe a good indicator?

I would suggest they are using an abundance of caution, and not worry about it too much.
