"Covid-19 coronavirus: Wellington officially virus-free again"

Wellington is officially free of Covid-19 after the last remaining cases linked to the Defence Force cluster recovered on Tuesday.

Keep scanning those QR codes folks, and update the app for Bluetooth tracking now.

I know someone living in the UK who went out the previous week, and this week they got 3 different warnings to isolate for 9 days from their tracking system due to being in locations where they were considered close contacts. It shows how important scanning in and tracking is, and that  this  technology works. But I suspect many people aren't because they think the vaccine is coming and will fix it, and will ignore calls to isolate. The Minority Report with cameras scanning and tracking everyone  IMO looks more and more likely to mitigate the risks of these sorts of problems in the future, and doesn't need everyone to be chipped. I can see it possibly even be a Worksafe type of requirement for businesses, as these sorts of rules get tougher and tougher.

More reports are starting to emerge re the Pfizer vax
Four cases of Bell’s Palsy (partial facial paralysis)
Significant side effects after the 2nd shot
Although regarding reported Deaths of those in the trial : some of those who died were only given placebos

Lets not predend these vax's are 100% safe & without significant side effects for some .
At least by the time they get to NZ , they would have been very well tested , with the all mass vax's in the UK & US that will happen soon.

I'm not a doctor, or any kind of medical professional.

Regarding Bell’s Palsy (partial facial paralysis), I understand it's very distressing, but Bell’s Palsy is usually temporary.

Not that I'd ever want it.

https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Disorders/Patient-Caregiver-Education/Fact-Sheets/Bells-Palsy-Fact-Sheet

When and if it happens, Bell’s Palsy "symptoms appear suddenly over a 48 - 72-hour period and generally start to improve with or without treatment after a few weeks, with recovery of some or all facial function within six months.

In some cases, residual muscle weakness lasts longer or may be permanent. "

The Washington Post - Coronavirus Updates: U.S. shatters new daily deaths record

today

The United States once again set multiple terrible records Wednesday: 3,140 coronavirus deaths in a day, more than 106,000 covid-19 patients in hospitals, and a running average of more than 208,000 new daily cases.

The country sets and breaks these records so frequently now that perhaps their main significance is this: The outbreak continues to worsen according to nearly every measure, there are no signs of an imminent turnaround or even a slowdown, and winter hasn't even begun. ...

Speaking of Qld,

I see the UQ Covid Vaccine has been binned after it resulted in some false-positive HIV results caused by its protein "clamp" being detected by testing

Interesting take on the timeframe required for vaccination testing - this article points out how quickly the Moderna vaccine was created, and that the vaccine that is soon to roll out was created before the first US Covid death.

The various trials are of course unavoidable, and the cause for the delay between creation and introduction, but what the article points out is that they could effectively create vaccines for future viruses, and then put them through phase one and two trials in advance so that any future pandemics could be quickly countered:

"According to Florian Krammer, a vaccine scientist at Mount Sinai, you could do all of this at a cost of about $20 million to $30 million per vaccine and, ideally, would do so for between 50 and 100 different viruses — enough, he says, to functionally cover all the phylogenies that could give rise to pandemic strains in the future. (“It’s extremely unlikely that there is something out there that doesn’t belong to one of the known families, that would have been flying under the radar,” he says. “I wouldn’t be worried about that.”) In total, he estimates, the research and clinical trials necessary to do this would cost between $1 billion and $3 billion. So far this year, the U.S. government has spent more than $4 trillion on pandemic relief. Functionally, it’s a drop in the bucket, though Krammer predicts our attention, and the funding, will move on once this pandemic is behind us, leaving us no more prepared for the next one. When he compares the cost of such a project to the Pentagon’s F-35 — you could build vaccines for five potential pandemics for the cost of a single plane, and vaccines for all of them for a fraction of the cost of that fighter-jet program as a whole — he isn’t signaling confidence it will happen, but the opposite."

Press release:

The Prime Minister of New Zealand Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern and the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands. Mark Brown have agreed an ‘Arrangement to Facilitate Quarantine-Free Travel between the Cook Islands and New Zealand’.

Both Prime Ministers and their Cabinets have instructed officials to continue working together to put in place all measures required to safely recommence two-way quarantine-free travel in the first quarter of 2021.

“The Arrangement recognises the special ties between New Zealand and the Cook Islands. It will allow people to travel more easily between our two countries, while acknowledging that the priority remains to protect our populations from COVID-19,” Prime Minister Ardern said.

Prime Minister Brown welcomed progress, noting that the free movement of people between New Zealand and the Cook Islands is central to our close relationship and integral to the Cook Islands’ recovery from COVID-19 impact.

“This Arrangement is the next step towards resuming many aspects of life in the Cook Islands that have been disrupted by COVID-19, including access to health and education, and reuniting family and friends,” Prime Minister Brown said.

Acknowledging the Cook Islands’ COVID-free status, New Zealand will work at pace to implement quarantine-free access for travellers from the Cook Islands to New Zealand as a first step in a phased approach to resumption of two-way quarantine free travel between the two nations. “Quarantine-free access for travellers from the Cook Islands to New Zealand will provide for the movement of people for delivering and accessing essential services, while allowing officials to finalise preparations for a safe return to two-way quarantine-free travel” Prime Minister Ardern said.
