Yep. Donald already disagreed publicly to his, err followers and reaffirmed nothing would change in the US. That the cure can't be as bad as the cause

Let's see how that pans out in a week or so

Better news today from Sydney.
They conducted 38,000 tests, only 15 new cases, all linked to the cluster.

So they don't really know, the increase in cases of the new variant may be just chance, but it sure looks like the mutation gives it an advantage over other variants allowing it to spread faster.  That may be because of higher viral load because it can infect cells more easily, OTOH higher viral load had been associated with more severe symptoms, but AFAIK that's not what they're seeing.

In vernacular:

"Bad news: new mutation seem much more easier to catch.

Good news(???): new mutation is probably as deadly as old mutations."

It's nearly here :-(

A strain of COVID-19 that transfers quicker than previous mutations has been brought into Australia by UK travellers, NSW Health has confirmed.

"The Warehouse Group to repay $68m wage subsidy"

The group came under fire from unions, commentators and some politicians for taking the money and then proceeding to cut as many as 750 jobs.

Group chief executive Nick Grayston said sales were up by about 6.5 per cent for the year to date and it expected its half-year proft to be up by more than 50 per cent on last year.

He said the company was now in a position to repay the subsidy in full.

MIQd... None of the CTs thus far.

Will happen here unless they also block all UK and transiting stops with It. But don't see that happening

Nearly all our import cases are transits of at least 1 country. So you can't pick the actual origin. Especially with them going at day 6+.
Likewise, you know that transit agreement of no isolation into qld we had? Yeah. About that. Seems there was some small print despite notifications of qualifying.

Required a 'clean' special trip. Only cleared/approved kiwis. No transiting extras. But they were onto that and a bunch of kiwis got stuck thanks to some transit hoppers like we're getting.

It's inevitable that it's going to get here.

If a significant mutation has occurred, then we better be sure how it behaves.  Having "stickier" spike proteins may not be the reason it may be more contagious. Be too bad if the reason it's winning the infection competition with earlier strains is something else - like people infected stay contagious earlier / longer than our test and quarantine system seems to have been able to handle.

The problem is that it could potentially be more likely to get out of MIQ facilities if it is more contagious, as it is more liekly that workers could get infected, especially if there are areas of weakness, and no MIQ facility  is bulletproof. Guessing this new mutation has a higher infection rate too. I wonder if this is related to the one that infected minks which was supposed to be more contagious?

IMO we should really be now requiring these people from the UK especally, but also other infested countries, to do 14 days of isolation before departing to NZ, to reduce the risk of it getting into MIQ facilities in NZ. Top epidemiologists have been calling for this for some time. Also not happy that a report into NZs failings over covid, wasn't released to the public until after the election, when they could have released it prior. One of the failings with running an election during a global pandemic.

It may get into MIQs, and therefore restrained at the border. But the problem is if it gets out, or whether it is more likely to get out.

He can suggest it all he wants. But until you can prove people have pre isolated. (Reliably) and ALL of them, noone seems to be on the lookout for 1-way ticket runners doing country hops that risk those who would.

Most of the flights arriving here are transiting, and would probably not change. It's the bits going on when they're not direct (very few are) that will still unravel. And hes forgetting to consider that fact.
And likely the reason for these current 9 and 12 day detections. As people are en masse taking 3 flights to get here

Look at today's 'via' list alone.

We may have our own Covid freight problems, but then it would seem to pale in comparison with what UK now have.
Trucks lined up further than eye can see, poor drivers have no idea when or if they will be cleared.

There were also calls by prominent people in NZ to get tested 3 days before a flight. No help, when that 3 days can be spent boozing and partying. How does another country control another country's isolation protocols? Dont get me wrong, a GREAT idea, but in practice it provides more emotional protection that practical protection.
