Better news today from Sydney.
They conducted 38,000 tests, only 15 new cases, all linked to the cluster.

So they don't really know, the increase in cases of the new variant may be just chance, but it sure looks like the mutation gives it an advantage over other variants allowing it to spread faster. That may be because of higher viral load because it can infect cells more easily, OTOH higher viral load had been associated with more severe symptoms, but AFAIK that's not what they're seeing.
It's nearly here :-(
A strain of COVID-19 that transfers quicker than previous mutations has been brought into Australia by UK travellers, NSW Health has confirmed.
"The Warehouse Group to repay $68m wage subsidy"
The group came under fire from unions, commentators and some politicians for taking the money and then proceeding to cut as many as 750 jobs.
Group chief executive Nick Grayston said sales were up by about 6.5 per cent for the year to date and it expected its half-year proft to be up by more than 50 per cent on last year.
He said the company was now in a position to repay the subsidy in full.

It's inevitable that it's going to get here.
If a significant mutation has occurred, then we better be sure how it behaves. Having "stickier" spike proteins may not be the reason it may be more contagious. Be too bad if the reason it's winning the infection competition with earlier strains is something else - like people infected stay contagious earlier / longer than our test and quarantine system seems to have been able to handle.

The problem is that it could potentially be more likely to get out of MIQ facilities if it is more contagious, as it is more liekly that workers could get infected, especially if there are areas of weakness, and no MIQ facility is bulletproof. Guessing this new mutation has a higher infection rate too. I wonder if this is related to the one that infected minks which was supposed to be more contagious?
IMO we should really be now requiring these people from the UK especally, but also other infested countries, to do 14 days of isolation before departing to NZ, to reduce the risk of it getting into MIQ facilities in NZ. Top epidemiologists have been calling for this for some time. Also not happy that a report into NZs failings over covid, wasn't released to the public until after the election, when they could have released it prior. One of the failings with running an election during a global pandemic.

It may get into MIQs, and therefore restrained at the border. But the problem is if it gets out, or whether it is more likely to get out.
We may have our own Covid freight problems, but then it would seem to pale in comparison with what UK now have.
Trucks lined up further than eye can see, poor drivers have no idea when or if they will be cleared.

There were also calls by prominent people in NZ to get tested 3 days before a flight. No help, when that 3 days can be spent boozing and partying. How does another country control another country's isolation protocols? Dont get me wrong, a GREAT idea, but in practice it provides more emotional protection that practical protection.
