IMO we should really be now requiring these people from the UK especally, but also other infested countries, to do 14 days of isolation before departing to NZ, to reduce the risk of it getting into MIQ facilities in NZ. Top epidemiologists have been calling for this for some time. Also not happy that a report into NZs failings over covid, wasn't released to the public until after the election, when they could have released it prior. One of the failings with running an election during a global pandemic.

There were also calls by prominent people in NZ to get tested 3 days before a flight. No help, when that 3 days can be spent boozing and partying. How does another country control another country's isolation protocols? Dont get me wrong, a GREAT idea, but in practice it provides more emotional protection that practical protection.

I saw on the news that apparently 27 counties are now banning flights from the UK due to the risk of this new mutation, and possibly for due to the fact that it is impossible to trust people and other countries protocols. I think NZ will need to follow, but we could still get case from connecting flights, or if it spreads to other countries. We were too slow with the original outbreak in shutting down the border, which ended up in a lockdown to purge the virus, and we could end up in a similar situation again. This new strain is definitely a worry for a country like NZ which is currently clear of the virus, mainly because it could rip through the country as we have almost no immunity at all, unlike the UK and most other countries which are living in a Covid socially isolated world.

Close the borders to anyone from a country with high infection rates and any issues with the new strain.

Basically, close the borders.

EDIT: Before people say, "What bout compassionate grounds etc?" - we have a friend who passed away rather more quickly than anticipated. Her sister didn't get to see her as she was isolated in MIQ. She wrote to the authorities and asked on compassionate grounds to be released early as her tests were all negative, she'd tested negative before leaving AU and she wasn't able to get an earlier booking for MIQ, so couldn't arrive earlier anyway. She was going into a family bubble - they were all prepared to self-isolate.

She was turned down, while sports people were allowed in and broke protocols and didn't get punished and went about their business of having fun and playing sports, while her sister died a few KM away and she didn't get to say goodbye.

Just shut the borders and have done with it.

Way back in the early months of the Coronavirus, I struggled to get people I interacted with to take it seriously.  That include members of the local Menz Shed I attend two or three times a week including the Chairman and other committee members.  My wife worked at the hospital and was waiting for it to kick off, but worse than that, an old buddy of mine in the UK got sick with COVID, was admitted to hospital, and died three days later.  He was only 61 for goodness sake.

It's not over, and Coronavirus mutations are a real worry.  Do we know if any of the vaccines will protect against the new strain?  Will the virus keep evolving meaning we have a constant, and very expensive, fight to stay ahead of it?  Right now I don't feel like visiting the UK or America to see friends and family.

Actually, truth be told, I'm glad of an excuse to stay in NZ.

The borders thing is so tricky.... I understand NZ is your home and you have a right to come back here, and I'd probably want the ability to come home if I needed to, but at the same time you've had the best part of a year to sort your life out and move back. I think I'd be ok with closing the borders to people from certain hotspots, or at the very least making them do extra.

freitasm: First (36) cases in Antarctica.

I saw the article on One News tonight, and thought that looked very like the Grand Tetons.  What are they not telling us?

Vax in distribution queue after EU approval (BioNtec). Wife will have to vaccinate her medical colleagues and hospital staff next Sunday first.

Volunteering military paramedic squads will scramble to the rest homes to our elderly people who'll get it first still in this year (as long as supply/production lasts).

If all fails, they have steel hats with Red Cross markings (instead of tin hats - but I think they will go with their blue berets right after Xmas) ;-)
