TLD:

freitasm: First (36) cases in Antarctica.

I saw the article on One News tonight, and thought that looked very like the Grand Tetons.  What are they not telling us?

... (photos cut)

Everything known to humans other than what was covered in the article?

Not clear what the question is driving at.

Photos of two different mountain ranges with a rough similarity.  Or rather, the Antarctic range has a rough similarity to the peaks above the treeline in the lower photo.  And ...?

Handsomedan:

Close the borders to anyone from a country with high infection rates and any issues with the new strain.

Basically, close the borders.

EDIT: Before people say, "What bout compassionate grounds etc?" - we have a friend who passed away rather more quickly than anticipated. Her sister didn't get to see her as she was isolated in MIQ. She wrote to the authorities and asked on compassionate grounds to be released early as her tests were all negative, she'd tested negative before leaving AU and she wasn't able to get an earlier booking for MIQ, so couldn't arrive earlier anyway. She was going into a family bubble - they were all prepared to self-isolate.

She was turned down, while sports people were allowed in and broke protocols and didn't get punished and went about their business of having fun and playing sports, while her sister died a few KM away and she didn't get to say goodbye.

Just shut the borders and have done with it.

I agree - Close the borders on 1 Jan 2021 for a minimum of 12 months. No flights, no freight, no imports, no exports.. CLOSED.

In 12 months we should have some awareness of the side effects of the currently proposed vaccines and be able to make a call on how we should proceed next.

Mirror: Girlfriend of lovesick jetskier jailed for riding to Isle of Man wants to marry him

The girlfriend of a lovesick man who jetskied from Scotland to see her on the Isle of Man would marry him if he asked.

Despite never having ridden a water scooter before and not being able to swim, Dale McLaughlan made the treacherous 25-mile voyage in a desperate effort to see Jessica Radcliffe.

The 28-year-old, from Irvine, took four and a half hours to motor across the sea, the Daily Record reported.

While he may have made Jessica swoon, the romantic gesture landed Dale in prison for four weeks because it broke Covid-19 restrictions.

...His car and the trailer used to transport the jetski to the harbour were left just off the slipway, leading to Coastguard teams fearing the worst.

By the time the search began, Dale had already touched down in Ramsey harbour with only a few minutes of fuel remaining in the tank.

...he hadn’t expected the journey to last as long, assuming it would only take 40 minutes (38 MPH in open ocean).

...Despite testing negative for coronavirus, Dale was jailed on Monday at Douglas Courthouse.

Never going to Happen,

NZ is integrated into global supply chains,  there are 21 billion litres of milk that are collected every year with 95% exported, without exports (and the income) the farmers would be walking off their land and shooting millions of cows,

Same for the red meat sector, horticulture, wine industry...

Then there is the howls from consumers when they get told no new cars, TVs, play stations and phones....

As I understand it

  • Refusing to wear a face mask in flight in the cockpit is apparently contrary to the airline's internal rules - incidentally he infected both the other two flight crew - and "Bringing the company into disrepute" - it was named & shamed in the Taiwanese media
Are either individually or together a dismissal offence
  • Not telling the Taiwanese government contact tracers about a meet-up you had with a local young lady gets you a approximately $US10,000 fine. Yup, infected her too

Hard to feel a lot of sympathy

You can use the cows to pull the cars when there isn't any petrol.

You’d actually create a worse situation than COVID itself by closing borders including to freight. Hence that’s never going to happen.

New Zealand isn’t exactly a mass producer of pharmaceuticals which a number of people rely on including those in hospitals, and that’s only one example.

"Ten people have been given antibodies as a form of emergency protection after being exposed to coronavirus, in the first trial of its kind."

I guess they haven't heard of the mystical legend called the White House where this is a well established form of treatment. Though at the WH the ABs were given after a while, probably not as immediate as this trial ... but still ...

Quite true. We'd probably need some deliveries of very specialised products, plus sadly we're dependent on offshore oil.

One question is how self sufficient can NZ really be. This current COVID situation should be a wake up call for NZ to be considerably more self-sufficient. The current global supply chain issues aren't going to be resolved quickly.

The wake-up call should probably go in the direction of finally understanding that we have to act and think globally together so that we can master the challenges of the future and not think in terms of national or geographical boundaries.

How are you going to get anyone to act globally? Someone will always have to give something up for any solution to work, and no-one wants to.
