Rikkitic:

How are you going to get anyone to act globally? Someone will always have to give something up for any solution to work, and no-one wants to.

That is undoubtedly correct. But it already starts with simply dealing with the fact that every tree that is felled in the Amazon goes to the substance of all humanity. The same applies to production methods in China that do not meet environmental standards (OT).

mattwnz: I saw on the news that apparently 27 counties are now banning flights from the UK due to the risk of this new mutation, and possibly for due to the fact that it is impossible to trust people and other countries protocols. I think NZ will need to follow, but we could still get case from connecting flights, or if it spreads to other countries.

Many of these countries have treatment capacity issues, and even so are generally open for travel. NZ ban is not needed. NZ is in a different position entirely.

And this is why opening up is dumb. Don't trust people to do the right stuff - just asking them to self-quarantine is putting too much trust on dumb:

Hundreds of British tourists fled the upmarket Swiss ski resort of Verbier in a “cloak-and-dagger operation” this week, breaking quarantine rules retroactively put in place to contain the spread of the coronavirus variant first discovered in the UK.

Following the detection of the new mutation of Covid-19 in Britain, Swiss authorities announced on 21 December that all people who had arrived from the UK since 14 December would need to self-isolate for 10 days from their date of arrival.

The New York Times - Chinese Citizen Journalist Sentenced to 4 Years for Covid Reporting

today

A Chinese court on Monday sentenced a citizen journalist who documented the early days of the coronavirus outbreak to four years in prison, sending a stark warning to those challenging the government’s official narrative of the pandemic.

Zhang Zhan, a 37-year-old citizen journalist, was the first known person to face trial for chronicling China’s outbreak. ...

Ms. Zhang was fiercely critical of the government in her dispatches, asking why it had tried to silence whistle-blowers about the virus and questioning whether Wuhan’s lockdown had been enacted too harshly.

She also directly challenged propaganda exalting the government response. ...

Anyone reading this probably isn't worried about being tracked via a shot.

If you know anyone's concerned about being tracked through any shot, the next time you go to the vet, tell them to ask to see a micro-chip and the needle they use for microchipping pets.

The RFID microchip is larger than a grain of rice, so pretty easy to spot floating in a shot.

Best conditions, with optimal antenna position, its read range is 10 cm / 4 inches.

It has no on-board power supply, hence the limited range; if it had battery / power source to improve its range, it wouldn't fit through a needle.

If they wake up with an unexplained incision and stitches, or they are pooping blood, then they can worry.

If the are worried about being tracked, tell them to get vaccinated, and redirect their paranoia from the impractical to the real-life: from vaccines to join to the Insane Clown Posse to avoid facial recognition / phone tracking

They don't learn!

From CNN:

US air travel on Sunday was the highest of the pandemic

The Transportation Security Administration said it screened a record number of people at US airports nationwide on Sunday, breaking a pandemic air travel record set only last Wednesday.

At least 1,284,599 people passed through security checkpoints Sunday, the TSA said. That is the highest level air travel has reached since March 15th.

The new figure is about one half of the number of fliers from the same day a year ago.

That is a sign that some people are staying home, but not as many as health experts and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would like. Earlier this month, the CDC urged Americans to stay home to avoid spreading coronavirus.

Air travel has spiked, according to the TSA, with US air travel numbers hitting more than a million passengers for six of the past ten days.

I don't think that's an accurate assessment.

The reality in the US is that the virus is rampant, and stopping it right now simply isn't possible. People have simply decided to adapt and move on with their lives while living with it in society.

When NZ reopens it's borders (even if it's mid 2022 like the Govt are currently planning for) we're going to have to live with reintroducing Covid into the country where it will simply continue to exist much like the cold or flu do now.

There are some differences from a cold or flu. Covid-19 vaccination is very effective. There is every chance transmission of Covid-19 will be eliminated with vaccination in NZ. Worldwide four million vaccinated mostly in UK and USA so far. Safety is excellent.

Like any vaccination there are some excluded people. At this point I believe it's not recommended for people with documented allergies until related studies are completed.

Imo sensible travel and tourism reopening decision can only be made based on vaccination rate and vulnerability of any remaining unvaccinated population. Ongoing border testing and traveller vaccination may be required.

I expect the false theory that 5G causes COVID to come into this story at some point

Insider: Nashville bombing suspect told ex-girlfriend he had cancer and gave possessions away in weeks leading up to suicide, reports say as authorities investigate 5G-paranoia motive

...On Sunday, the FBI said Warner was responsible for blowing up an RV in downtown Nashville on Friday. Warner died, and three others were injured. At least 41 buildings, many of them historical, were damaged by the blast...

Covid will be immediately reintroduced into NZ once our borders open though, which is the point I'm making. We can't keep our borders shut forever, and likewise we can't keep MIQ processes in place forever.

We will still have people coming into NZ with Covid as long as it exists in the world, just like we have people coming into the country with influenza and colds. What we don't yet truly know is how effective vaccines are when it comes to preventing people from shedding the virus, with many virologists believing that many people (and the problem is "many" is a truly undefined number at this point that could be between 1 and 100%) will carry and shed the virus once they're vaccinated, but that the virus will not affect them.

The problem with this scenario is that people bringing the virus into the country still have the potential to affect unvaccinated people, and even those who are vaccinated could still become ill because no vaccine has 100% efficiacy during testing, and certainly won't have 100% effectiveness in the real world. What we do know however is that those who have become ill despite being vaccinated have only had minor to mild symptoms.

"Russia admits to world's third-worst Covid-19 death toll"

Russia said on Monday that its coronavirus death toll was more than three times higher than it had previously reported, making it the country with the third-largest number of fatalities.

For months, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has boasted about Russia’s low fatality rate from the virus, saying earlier this month that it had done a better job at managing the pandemic than western countries.

But since early in the pandemic, some Russian experts have said the government was playing down the country’s outbreak.

On Monday, Russian officials admitted that was true. The Rosstat statistics agency said that the number of deaths from all causes recorded between January and November had risen by 229,700 compared with the previous year.

“More than 81% of this increase in mortality over this period is due to Covid,” said the deputy prime minister, Tatiana Golikova, meaning that more than 186,000 Russians have died from Covid-19.

Russian health officials have registered more than 3m infections since the start of the pandemic, putting the country’s caseload at fourth-highest in the world.

at the moment NZ is ok with 300 or so people dying each year from the flu  and thousands in Hospitals that we should be ok for Covid to do much the same and not worry about it. Time will tell.

Common sense is not as common as you think.
