Name people if they don't follow the rules, public backlash would be punishment.

Stocks and all the rotten fruit they've caused go to waste I think would be apt. /s.

COVID is the enemy here, but holy jeepers, this dude has given the appearance of going out of his way to spread COVID. This isn't a once-off Oopsie.

It's a straight up disregard to every single person who catches this. It's a life sentence. It's not a cold, or a flu, it leaves people with debilitating life altering injuries.

And this is the UK variant too, which has a significantly higher R. Value when left unchecked too. This dude was criminal in his actions, and should be treated like one.

Not necessarily. It would be a breach of privacy at minimum.

Unfortunately, public backlash these days runs a real risk of self-appointed 'enforcers' who decide some form of violence is just the ticket. No matter how annoying some self-important idiot's selfishness and stupidity is, nothing warrants a bashing (or worse!).

If the lynch mobs are released this will make more folk go underground.

As much as it irks me that these idiots have ruined it for all of us north of Waikato and south of Northland, I don't think the lynch mob mentality is going to help anyone.

What I would like to see is strict enforcement of the various rules/acts/laws that are available and prosecution to be swift and punitive.

Fines - Large fines. And if they can't pay, imprisonment in some form. Or work detail.

Just set an example - make it obvious you'll get caught out in a lie and the consequences are dire. If someone dies from COVID as a result of this idiot, then there could be a justification for a Manslaughter charge, IMO.

Privacy is a right, not a privilege.

And allowing a mob to mete out whatever punishment it feels is appropriate is also not the way a civilised country behaves.

Somewhat concerning we're 45 mins late for the update on status today...

Given there is a 3pm press conference update, seems like we going to be told then instead of the normal 1pm media release.

Until his actions are investigated, he gets charged and sent to court. Will likely initially get name suppression. Maybe this will take place further down the track once the concern of putting people off getting tested (ie we have vaccines widely supplied) is reduced. .

As well as stupidity, a big problem of contact tracing is admitting to doing something that may be embarrassing, illegal or bring the wrath of your parents on you. You will tend to not say anything and hope that you don't get caught out or nothing happens as a result. And of course, this brings delays.

Very hard if not impossible to actually stop this.

Fines and other such punishments will not stop it. But the consequences from after it happens will have a bigger effect.

It is similar to the Drug laws. They stop folks seeking help with addiction in fear of retribution.
