Just catching up on this thread - in particular I wanted to comment on the suggestion that 11 missed phone calls was not sufficient and MOH should send a text.

I am a contact who was called by the National Investigation and Tracing Centre. I missed their first phone call, a voicemail was left, and a text message came in a moment or two later saying it was the MOH it was urgent and to answer. They then tried my work phone number (God knows how they have it) and the same thing happened.

To be blunt, after 11 missed calls I would be at least curious what it was and ring back or Google the number.

I am wondering what number it is showing. I get missed calls from numbers with odd area codes like India which are no doubt scam calls, on an almost daily basis. They don't leave messages or txt, so guessing they are bot scam calls.

Its becoming a farce now. I used to get annoyed when luck was used for our great response and results to date, 100,000 plus and just a few issues. But going by the blatant complacent shown recently, its all luck from here on. Luck that a carrier is a good person. Or not.

Time for big fines, adding to  criminal records, and locking people up IMO. People know the rules under level 3 and 4.

In that scenario why would someone who had done something wrong cooperate with contact tracing or even get tested?

They'd be far better off to stay quiet and avoid testing. Most people don't need treatment when they get covid so they could just ride it out and keep infecting others.

Fines make sense for things like not wearing a mask or not socially distancing but once you have infections they won't have any positive effect.

@Handle9 it is the same flawed action taken in the so called war against drugs. It resulted in people not seeking assistance for addiction for fear of prosecution. The purpose of big fines will be to make some in the community feel better.

The phone call came from 09 801 3009 (which is the number listed on the MOH website) and the texts from two random 027 numbers. They did identify themselves as MOH in both the text and voicemail - but then again in the day and age of scams you probably wouldn't necessarily take that at face value.

Don't know about others, but when I was young and did something stupid / wrong, if I admitted to the mistake the punishment was significantly less than if I tried to lie or cover it up.

I simply don't accept that a year into this pandemic that people "don't understand" the seriousness of it, how quickly it can take hold and that caution is required. Dickhead M is a MIT student, either their student acceptance standards are so ridiculously low that reading comprehension and a basic level of intelligence isn't required, or dickhead M is coming up with whatever excuse is going to deflect blame away. I'd opt for the latter....

Uhm. That ship has sailed. People are already not cooperating, they're already not getting tested and now they're doing it with impunity.

We're being told: "Punishing the rule breakers will cause more rule breakers".

But in the same breath not punishing rule breakers is also causing more rule breakers.

So.. what path do you want to go - punish those who quite deliberately break the rule. E.G. Deliberately withholding information to the contact tracers. E.g. Those families that lied and caused us to go into lockdown which I think is on the pretty damn obvious thing to punished for list.

If you want to see if people do the right thing when nobody's watching, sit at any Stop sign anywhere in the country and I'll estimate that 70-90% of people will fail to stop unless there's a cop watching them.

Covid-19: Aucklanders who fled lockdown stress Northland health services

Why are there people fleeing Auckland? Are these people that are scared of catching COVID and so want to get away from where it has been found? Or are these people that don't want to abide by the stay-at-home rule? They obviously don't have jobs that tie them to Auckland.

Guarantee you it's the latter. I don't understand the mentality - sure lockdowns are not very fun but I feel like this massively increases the risk of taking the virus with you.

Cynically, I doubt it's people from the impacted/at-risk South Auckland community fleeing to Northland and the Coromandel...

Reminds me of Italy when they first locked down. It was leaked so everyone scarpered. The rest was history

Its not fun, so its all about me...

Say nobody from South Auckland scarpered, but what about those from South Auckland that spread the love in greater Auckland?

Anyone defending religion at this point... Destiny Church leaders Brian and Hannah Tamaki leave Auckland on eve of level 3 lockdown

Sure, leaving before the lockdown at 6am wasn't "illegal" but completely against the spirit.

The following morning, Hannah Tamaki took to the stage during the Sunday service to explain their reasons.

“So of course we escaped down to Rotorua, got here just after 12am because the shutdown was at 6am, and Mark and Daniel got down here to help us do this,” she said.

“But it was better for us to be here – be in the atmosphere, be able to do this for you. So thank you for all the team that has made this happen.”

Brian Tamaki, who describes himself as an apostle, explained his reasons for getting out of Auckland.

“We're on lockdown three in Auckland, that means there's to be no business for seven days. I made a decision with Hannah to go out before the 6am road blockages by the police and we can't get out for seven days.

“I'd be locked in my house. Gardening is okay, but I think I'll be more productive out in the rest of the country.”

And he urged his followers not to fear the virus.

“God said that no plague will come near your house: 'I will send angels to guard and look after those who are in the secret place with God'.

I can see the argument for and against punishing rule breakers. I really wish there'd be more consequences, because it feels like the rest of us are being punished because of their stupidity and / or selfishness. That said, I can see no good reason why the government announces lockdowns before setting up roadblocks. The volume of cars fleeing Auckland from 9pm Sunday to 6am Monday is staggering, rough math puts it around 21000 vehicles, each carrying 1 to 7 people (larger vehicles are counted separately by Waka Kotahi / NZTA's traffic counting machines) - that's a hell of a lot of spins of the Virus Roulette wheel.

As a country we've done remarkably with respect to COVID, but that track record and the endemic Kiwi attitude to risk ("she'll be right") is working against us. The current crop of morons who have spawned the current lockdown are a prime example (visiting isolating people, feeling unwell, getting tested, going to public places after the testing).

@freitasm that really has nothing to do with religion as such. Those two are pseudo religious scam artists. Their actions would be the same no matter what they were currently into.
