freitasm: Hi folks. Surgery went well. I am just back in my room after recovering from anesthetics and everything else.

Good news. The liquid was not spinal fluid but the result of an infection. Drained, cleaned, checked spinal cord which seems to be intact. Because of this it looks like I need only 48 hours lying flat or sideways, instead of the previous five to six days as before. Loaded on antibiotics now.

Things happened, not all good. Antibiotics ravaged three IV lines so doctors changed to a milder one, which is not as painful. Still leaking some liquid so today surgeons were discussing between a fourth surgery or a different action. For many reasons it was decided a fourth surgery wasn't a good idea and an alternative was adopted. It also means I am at hospital for at another six days from today.

You are really going through it there. I trust this approach is successful and you are out of hospital at the end of six days. All the best from all of us.

So sorry to hear this. Must be very tough and disheartening for you but comforting to have less pain.
Sounds good that they are choosing the least invasive option first and hopefully it will work out.

Understandably stressful for you but think of it like when you get stuck in a traffic jam for hours...no choice and no point getting upset and raising blood pressure, so relax and allow your body to cruise calmly through this. A relaxed state can make all the difference to healing.

I went on a course about deep breathing a while back and the research was very convincing about what a difference it makes to healing and body function. So simple to do...breathe in slowly through the nose on a count of four making sure the stomach rises, then out slowly through the mouth on a count of five. Do it as often as you remember. Best wishes and stay positive.

Still in hospital. Switched from IV antibiotics to oral now, will start getting up tomorrow and hope to be home this weekend.

Just come across this thread!

Sorry to hear that you have been what my father would have called "in the wars" and glad that you're on the mend. That IV antibiotic business can be strange. I had listeriosis once and they put me on Gentamicin via IV.

That stuff is pretty strong and made me feel decidedly strange.

I am home since Thursday afternoon. Progress seems better than previous times - mind you I spent two weeks in hospital after surgery, unlike previous times, pretty much all the time lying flat or on my side. Taking loads of antibiotics for the next three weeks.
