Scott3:

Should note that the flu vaccine isn't actually very important this year as we don't have any circulating influenza in the community. Seems we are just going ahead with the annual influenza vaccination program as normal, to keep supply chains alive, to keep people used to getting it & because of some possible commutative immunity effect from annual jabs, and because of the risk of re-emergence of influenza as we start re-opening to travel. Still I'm going to get one.

Yes with MIQ in place in theory we should have no influenza in the country if things are working perfectly. Last year there was 6 documented cases of influenza in NZ across the whole winter flu season.

The good news about T-Cells.
Variants may cause problems for Antibodies in the future, but the immune system has multiple levels, and this explains reason to be confident re T-Cells.

By Vincent Racaniello Ph.D., Professor of Microbiology & Immunology in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University

The recent finding that amino acid changes in the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern do not impact T cell reactivity is very good news. In this study, the authors synthesized short peptides covering the entire proteome of multiple SARS-CoV-2 isolates, including the original Wuhan strain, and variants B.1.1.7, B.1.351, P.1, and CAL.20C.

Hate to say it but sounds like it's probably going to prove right

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/covid-19-coronavirus-warning-after-man-in-victoria-australia-develops-blood-clots-following-vaccine/KIKCY5Y6LLASXDNNBODKJVD3PI/

There is almost certainly something in this, and it's becoming clear now the issue is probably in people with who already have low platelet counts.

The issue now becomes one of risk - if you don't control Covid lots of people will die. If you continue to give the vaccine it's possible that a very small number of people with health issues may suffer a blood clot and die. From a medical report I read earlier in the week it said there have been 7 people in the UK who have died and from memory 20 million had received the AstraZeneca vaccine now.

The US hit a new record yesterday - 3.975 million doses given in a single day.

All going to plan it looks like from late June onward (UK hopes to lift many restrictions no earlier than 17th May and all restrictions by no earlier than 21st June) the US and UK might enjoy a summer with lots of normality.

UK rolling out free rapid testing at home, twice weekly

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-56632084

Everyone in England is to be given access to two rapid coronavirus tests a week from Friday, under an extension of the government's testing programme.

The lateral flow kits, which can provide results in around 30 minutes, will be available for free at testing sites, pharmacies and through the post....

...The health secretary said it would help squash any outbreaks as lockdown eases.

But critics of the programme say it risks becoming a "scandalous" waste of money.

Likely as equally driven/guestimated by AirNZ increasing sales and frequency at the similar date.

Aint over till it's over.

And you watch the govt be coal-hauled the moment there is a breach or shop shut due change in circumstances regardless of being distanced from it on the outset

"We want a travel bubble!"

Then someone comes into Australia and jumps on a plane to New Zealand, creating a new cluster here.

"THE GOVERNMENT OPENED UP THE COUNTRY!"

Will it be another announcement for a future announcement on the travel bubble. LOL

The public does seem to have changed it's mood over the travel bubble, possibly due to the vaccine, and it's effectiveness. But overseas in Europe they now appear to be getting a third wave which seems to caused by mutations.
But IMO it is ridiculous that we haven't really started our vaccination program yet there hasn't been a big thing made about this in the media.  (only about 1% of population vaccinated and mainly border workers). Why not wait for the few months until we have got people vaccinated, and then people can travel to Oz, or vice versa  if they have been vaccinated. We seem to quickly forget the effect community transmission and  lockdowns.

Not just coincidence that AirNZ laid on extra capacity from that date.
