Ge0rge: Call me naive, or possibly even dumb, but for people like Tim who have no intent to return, I'm not really seeing any issue?

Those that do return, are still going to have to quarantine inNZ upon arrival, are they not?

Read on. They have a finable offence related to full block and not obtaining valid exemption. Exemption includes staying away for more than 3months. He's skirted that regardless.

Under the Biosecurity Act, failure to comply with an emergency determination can bring a fine of up to $66,000 or five years imprisonment or both.

The issue is if one of these people leaving the country is suddenly linked to a cluster in Australia and needs to be traced - they would be nowhere to be found and in the way here could have infected some people too.

These action make contact tracing very difficult, if not impossible at some point.

And here is why this bubble is stupid: Covid 19 coronavirus: Australians exploit Tasman bubble to use New Zealand to get to other countries - NZ Herald

What if contact tracing requires getting information from "Tim Byrnes"? What if Tim is identified as a close contact, but he already left the country?

No, I don't think this "bubble" is good.

The loophole was closed on Wednesday by Australia. Using NZ to get out of Australia is now a federal offence.

For anyone that still thinks our strategy was wrong:

Kamahl Santamaria on Twitter: "New Zealand’s @SIX60 and @edenparknz making it onto Al Jazeera’s news bulletins this Sunday

I hope karma doesn't come and bite us on the ass again like it did the last two times we bragged to the world media about our (lack of) restrictions which were followed by lockdowns within days when we detected CT!

People seem very risk adverse with covid.

The number of community cases in Australia is very low. Currently 2 local cases and 3 under investigation.
Both NZ and AU have proven they can investigate, control and eliminate any clusters that pop up.
We both have very good contact tracing.

Both countries have eliminated the virus and both countries will have ongoing leaks from time to time.

I seriously doubt any of the WA people who arrived in the last could of days have covid.
But just in case the we are contacting them to ask them to monitor their health.

A bubble is good for both countries.
It frees up MIQ spaces and let's us close down riskier hotels. It also helps trade by allowing free transfer of people working and bring down the coast of airfreight since there are more more flights/capacity.

To me the benefits to trade/families and MIQ spaces outweigh any minor risks.

WA premier has a bit of a go at Australian PM for allowing Aus citizens to fly overseas and back for weddings, and then rely on leaky / unfit for purpose hotels to be used for quarantine.

McGowan continuing the grand Australian tradition of states demanding control of something then having a whinge at the federal government about it.

We most certainty have not eliminated the virus on either sides of the pond. We're still a long way from achieving that.

We have achieved elimination in terms of it's definition, where it is eliminated from the NZ community. Elimination is not the save as eradication. But as long as we have people coming into NZ and cases leak through quarantine, then we are going to get cases in the community. This means a lot of testing. I think the speed at which our border is opened is almost solely based on when the speed at which NZers will be vaccinated, and amassing the speed at which other countries are vaccinated. I think travel from some countries could be restricted for years. But NZ is way behind many countries with our vaccinations.

In this particular case the state's want control of who enters their borders. They want their cake and to eat it too.

Morrison is a dweeb but the states can't unilaterally control entry to their state and then have a whinge about not having facilities. If they want the federal government to run it they should relinquish control to the federal government. I bet they won't.

Thats correct and its acceptable. Anyone who feels leaks can simply be 100% avoided is living in dreamland.

Perth lockdown is ending as planned tonight at midnight but some restrictions such as mask wearing and some places such as gyms still remaining closed. NZ will announce if they'll allow people to enter NZ and allow flights from Perth on Tuesday.
