In any case everyone wanted a bubble

That's not correct. I didn't want a bubble and I would think I am not the only one.

Poetic licence. Sure not EVERYONE wanted a bubble but its been asked for for a long time. Government wants it, Opposition parties want it, businesses, family members

We are all aware of the complaints and criticism anytime there was an MIQ leak. Now, we have a bubble where CT showed itself days after it started in multiple locations, now there is a Level 4 outbreak, we have 5000 arrived here from the outbreak, and not a blame game in sight. I guess even the media kept asking when's the bubble, when's the bubble, so they can't go blame hunting either.

Personally I've flip flopped over it, but given the state of these mutants and variants, and CT popped up over there in multiple locations before MEB, its too soon. Leave it till both countries are vaccinated, end of year. Vaccines wont solve it either, but its a big step for general safety

With no data to back me up, all that lot combined still wouldn't make up the majority of NZers.

Agree with your second point. Another six months. Let those that want to be jabed get it and then form bubbles before Christmas.

I have now had 2 automated texts inviting me to book my first jab.

Both are truncated.  Doesn't even get to the bit where it lists the phone number before it's cut off.  Does contain a link.

Also received an email which has the full statement.  Included in the email is the link and also the generated "user name" that you have to enter to make the booking.  This is not present in the text message.  I suspect many people who click the link from their text will not make it past the part where you have to enter your user name.  I cannot confirm what happens with the text link because I have already had my first jab and am not going to click on anything that might risk removing my existing 2nd jab booking.

@mattwnz:

I guess people knew the risks though before travelling to Oz, so have planned for this.

That's a joke, right?

They should have known.

What part of the memo stating “there is a global pandemic, the bubble could be suspended or closed at anytime, do not travel if you cannot accommodate for this” did they not read?

I have zero empathy for Kiwis stuck in Victoria who are now complaining.

As I mentioned in a chat...

"“I’ve been off work for the last month due to an injury, so I decided it would be a good chance to go over to Melbourne and see my son and some other family members.”"

Cool story. So you get hurt, not good to work but ok to travel to another country.

"“I’m feeling disappointed, frustrated and upset by the situation. The government should have foreseen this being an issue and allowed some MIQ spaces for people in Melbourne.”"

Well, no - because you can't leave Melbourne anyway. That's the whole idea. Red flights don't exist anymore.

"Stuck in Melbourne during the state’s fourth Covid-19 lockdown, Dr Peter Tribe is thinking of his patients. Speaking to Stuff from Melbourne, the GP from Te Awamutu said it could be hard for patients to meet with a new doctor, but he had confidence in his colleagues who were covering for him."

Well, so?

FWIW, I took advantage of the Sydney bubble and visited the city this week for an event. The company sponsoring the trip paid full insurance. I knew if anything happened I would be stuck there, or in MIQ on the way back. I would have no right to complain. But other people? Meh.

There seemed to have a lot more mask usage on the streets in Sydney than I've seen in Wellington and Auckland - I think we are in the "We beat it, why bother?" stage.

Most places in Sydney have signs about limited capacity. Some have signs saying "Do not sit here". Some have different entry/exit routes clearly marked. None of these things I've seen in New Zealand.

The airport is empty. As in you can walk fifteen minutes from the passport control to the Koru Lounge and see a dozen passengers. Most of the people are the duty free employees or the half dozen other open stores.

Incredibly bold of you to assume people have even read that advice, and if they have read it, paid it any heed whatsoever.

Given people can’t follow simple advice about scanning a QR code, why would they follow this advice? People routinely get given a media platform to whinge about the unfairness of a situation entirely of their own fault, and often end their whinge with “I didn’t know it would happen to me”. This is no different.

Likewise I have zero sympathy for anyone who claims to have been caught out by this - they are learning that in the real world, it happens.

Urban Dictionary: Leopards Ate My Face

"'I never thought leopards would eat MY face,' sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party. Revel in the schadenfreude anytime someone has a sad because they're suffering consequences from something they voted for or supported or wanted to impose on other people."

in a different world, US and UK intelligence are jointly looking at source of covid, as you do https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/covid-19-coronavirus-uk-us-jointly-probe-wuhan-lab-leak-theory/XOXZMHEHMACA7EEE3A3KQVULQA/

i'm not trying to stir a discussion that we've all previously had, and nobody will know, though genomically it points to wild source, but just putting the news that James Bond is on a new mission in his own world.

more disturbances between the 4 big countries i'd say.

apparently Russia is feeding the antivax campaign vs "western" vaccines - with the hope of perhaps putting the Sputnik higher up the chain https://apnews.com/article/european-union-russia-europe-fake-news-coronavirus-d12316c1e6c21fe2f1a450e8f387dbac

Russia.
Not the only world power that sees value in discrediting western vaccines and covid response unfortunately.

One of the biggest problems is we have no access to survey the countryside in China for a year and probably years to come.
There may have been limitations after the first SARS, but compared with zero access now, back then was relatively free.

Comparatively.

You block 'free' access to survey the links to rural villages and caves where this may have emerged.
Indeed the most probable links, with double benefit of maintaining vigilance for SARS3, next Bird Flu or Swine Flu.
If it reveals this was stalking some rural areas with poor healthcare for months earlier well what's the big face saving deal ?
If its was in the community months before, you don't need a lab leak for lab workers to get sick, they may have got sick in the community.

Then you complain that the improbable gains currency in this vacuum.

What do you expect ?

Sheesh ........

Regarding the origin's of covid-19, I don't think further investigation by western nation's is going to turn up anything useful at this stage. China has allways restricted the west's access to resources they need to effectively investigate this, and that is unlikly to change.

I don't think the answer is actually that important.

We know that corona viruses can leak from high level labs as it happened with the first SAR's.

It seems generally accepted that SARS-CoV-2 is a an animal sourced virus, rather than a lab created one. What does it really matter if a animal in a wet market transmitted it to people, or a person researching it in a lab accidentally got infected, and spread it... Either case could happen again in the future.

And frankly the worst case pandemic the world needs to be preparing for has got to be a bio-engendered pathogen that is deliberately released an act of terrorism or war. Such a pathogen would be orders or magnitude nastier than SARS-CoV-2.

Pre departure testing required. but seriously ... 2 words. vaccine. passport. is that so difficult ... unless ... vaccines will not stop restrictions ... then ... don't let the protesters find out!

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-coronavirus-pre-departure-test-for-some-travellers-from-australia/UHV6DFL46WS7DUXCAT3J4X4HWY/

Best vaccines are only 95% effective, so while usefull for reducing odds of transmission roughly 20 fold, arn't perfect to replace other measures.

I don't think New Zealanders or Australians would like to see vaccine passport untill such time as vaccines are readily available to all. But aussie's federal goverment is allready talking about it allowing exception to state border restrictions etc.

Why do I need a vaccine passport?

Surely the microchip that's now in my arm read via 5G when I go through the airport metal detector and they'll know I've been vaccinated?

That's a stark difference between my last few flights from AKL to CHC and other places. The domestic side was most of the time "jam packed". Was everyone wearing masks full time and keeping space in the international area?
