Yeah I get that, I read it as they know it will be delta but they need the official proof

Edit

The amount of regional travel since is also relevant?

Just heard from Bloomfield they're still waiting to hear from the useless Aussies if it was the Delta strain. Honestly, how the hell is taking days to get a genomic sequence back when we've had them reported within 24 hours previously.

An entire country is waiting for this info, you'd like to think it's a priority...

Yep!  I read, that some of the AUS lab people are sick (not Covid)  No, not making that up, the irony.

Why, what are we waiting to do??

We have an epidemiological link, and are assuming its the same variant as the current Sydney outbreak,

It would inly be a huge problem if it was NOT delta...

Dr Bloomfield has said that the genomic processing is being slowed down by sickness at the Lab  (not covid-related )

A week-long Lockdown in parts if Sydney has just been announced.

4 Local Government areas:  Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick and the City of Sydney

From 11:59 tonight, people in LGAs subjected to lockdown conditions will only be able to leave home for:

  • Shopping for food or other essential goods and services
  • Medical care or compassionate needs
  • Exercise outdoors in groups of 10 or fewer
  • Essential work, or education, where you cannot work or study from home

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-06-25/bondi-covid-19-cluster-grows-after-nsw-records-22-infections/100243242

I know Sydney is a big place, but I don't recall a partial city lockdown working for Melbourne.

Yeah, although its slightly trickier than that,

One of the conditions is "work", so if you work in the CBD, irrespective of where you live you have to stay at home....

"Ms Berejiklian said there were only five reasons for people who live or work in Woolhara, Waverley, Randwick and the City of Sydney to leave home. "

The thing they've got going for them is that they know the index case - the timing and and path of infection from there for almost all cases.

Well that's the hope they can keep contact tracing paths intact - but IMO it's probably doomed. Even if only one in ten people are idiots, there's a near certainty based on the cases already detected that they've got several or many infected idiots already spreading it out.

Map of Sydney cases / places of interest, the lockdown area is centred around / larger than the "117" bubble.  They've detected viral RNA fragments in Brooklyn sewage, and in Bourke almost 600km NW of Sydney.

Meanwhile Singapore Airlines wants a travel bubble with NZ. I hope they pay for my 5 star hotel stay if the bubble gets paused...

3 hairdressers were infected and infectious in one salon, 900 clients went through the salon over the period they were infectious. The first worker case at the salon was infected on the 16th, plus 5 days is only the 21st, and yet they've got two clients already confirmed positive - it's too early to test most of the rest.

The limited lockdown action is NSW's "gold standard" response?  That seems crazy - I think they're on the path to disaster.

Fiji is in real trouble, and seems there was reluctance to go hard on restrictions.
In addition how to implement given a lot of communal living and provide necessities of life, food etc.

12 deaths, over 2000 cases since latest outbreak in Fiji
https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/south-pacific/300341723/covid19-12-deaths-over-2000-cases-since-latest-outbreak-in-fiji

""
The Health Ministry confirmed one death and a record 308 new cases tonight, with 297 of them from the Lami-Suva-Nausori containment zone and 11 from Tramline Nadi.

Of the cases in the Lami-Suva-Nausori containment zone, 218 are from existing areas of interest: 153 from Qauia Settlement in Lami and 12 from new areas of interest that include Goodman Fielder, Gounder Shipping, Nausori Police Barracks, and St Giles Hospital.

I see tourist industry here is pointing out we are coming up for Aussie school holidays and ski season.
Um well not sure what we can do about that, if Sydney had locked down earlier, but they did not.

Fiji also appear to have a problem with people not wanting to be vaccinated - there are people talking about it being unwanted Australian vaccines and they're scared of the problems with AZ which were fueled by the Australian media.. Of course totally ignoring the fact Pfizer is totally unsuitable to their environment.

And apparently they are not including people who have underlying health conditions in their death stats.

Now more than just a blip.

The combination of the Delta variant and relaxed restrictions has seen the 7-day average rate of new cases in Israel increase by almost 10 fold over the last ~2 weeks, with the number yesterday, 20x higher than the average ~2 weeks ago.  The number of new severely ill cases has risen from ~2/week to 7/week over the last week but it is too early to know if this trend will continue.

Unsurprisingly, resurgence of cases has lead to jump in the number of vaccinations, especially in children (12+) and young people (total vaccinations yesterday 4x higher the average daily rate a week ago).

According to this article, 40% - 50% of the new cases are occurring in vaccinated people https://www.businessinsider.com.au/israel-50-of-delta-variant-cases-vaccinated-severe-2021-6?r=US&IR=T (unclear yet what proportion of these had only one dose).

Cases in vaccinated people are believed to be milder though there appears to be little actual Israeli data currently available, at least for the Delta variant (only recently arrived there).
