We could have been giving all of our elderly AZ by now from the supplies but have chosen not to.

At the time the decisions were being made here, there was only very limited data from Phase III trials on the efficacy of the AZ vaccine in over 65 age group.

In fact it wasn't until February this year that WHO endorsed use of that vaccine in over 65 YOs.  If the UK "went the way they did" then the immediate demands of the situation they were in was entirely different to NZ's situation.

The Phase III trails for the Pfizer vaccine were carried out on 65-74 and 75+ age groups, showing very high efficacy.

The Pfizer vaccine is quantifiably better - I'm very confident NZ made exactly the right decision at the right time based on the best data available.

There is plenty of recent data to show the differences in real world effectiveness (and not just trial efficacy) in elderly between Pfizer and AZ is very similar. Some even shows that AZ could be a better solution for elderly.

It's more the fact that right now we're a sitting duck with no vaccines hoping and praying we don't get CT here because out vaccination levels are so low. We're probably very lucky right now that the Australian visitor had a single jab of AZ because that potentially could have been the savior that prevented CT.

We could have easily opted to give AZ to elderly and could have even made that decision in early May once we knew what our vaccine levels would be like until late July, but we opted to not progress with approval for AZ. We've been giving away our Covax supplies of AZ.

No CT cases in NZ overnight.  I think it's going to be okay - luck was on our side.

That luck is gonna run out at some point.

It's inevitable.

Nope.  Even though both are still good (after both doses) the better performance of the mRNA vaccine against the Delta strain is significant.

Anyway, we're only weeks away from having our most vulnerable vaccinated.

We should suspend the travel bubble with Aus IMO.  For a few weeks.

We might be looking ok, nsw on the other hand is getting behind the eight ball. 29 more

One person, travelling from NSW, transited to Auckland through another Australian port and was "detected by Customs officials".

I think longer. 2 months tops. Get more people vaccinated and start doing most of the population(despite being in group 3 I'm still waiting). Then we can consider opening back up. Could be an unpopular opinion but I don't think we can keep up this "luck" forever.

We're still ~8 weeks away from (hopefully) having most of group 3 done though. Completion isn't due until around the end of August for at least the first dose.

I'm also in group 3 and still waiting for official notification. Except I stumbled across a neighbourhood site taking anyone in group 3 (unannounced) and I jumped in the queue (which wasn't long). One week to go until my second jab, for which I have an appointment. My advice: Seek it out yourself, don't wait to be invited, grab the opportunity if it arises.

If you are group 3 (as I am) you can call the helpline and they'll book an appointment, it was very easy. However when I called a couple of weeks ago the earliest availability was mid-July (Auckland) so I suspect by now you may be looking at August.

Positive case found in a worker in a gold mine in the middle of the NT.

It's in the middle of nowhere, worker camp with a few hundred people surrounded by hundreds of mile of nothing.

It's being reported that the worker contracted C-19 in Brisbane.  "How?' will be the big question.

There's not one example from anywhere in the world where "voluntary compliance" with containment measures has worked.

And the forced compliance has been for us, a pain, but brief. Oh, and they worked. The words worked, brief, go well together

This is what lockdowns are for. Some people don't follow directions and lie. This is a very contagious strain, and it is winter. A bubble with a country that has growing CT is a very bad idea for NZ. Lockdowns force everyone to do the right thing. NSW delayed lockdown, and didn't learn from Melbourne in 2020. Huge costly mistake, and also meant that NZ was badly affected too with this case in Wgtn.

It is just such a mess of inconsistencies.

Am in Christchurch and the CDHB basically have said on their website. Don't call.

So I think I might call them now.

Yep.  My FIL is 85, with COPD / asthma, still no confirmed date for first shot.  Had his 'flu shot about a month ago, was told at that time that after two weeks. he'd be called up.  He's been pestering his GP, but can't find out anything.

I have very low opinion of CDHB bureaucracy, but the same probably applies to most DHBs - they should have been abolished years ago.
