It would be lovely to have dodged yet another bullet, but i dont think we are out of the matrix just yet.

Oh no we're not, and the real concern is that if there was CT in Wellington it would now be a lot worse. Even though I hope we have won at Russian roulette once again, right now I wouldn't be putting money on a move back to L1 on Monday.

The simple fact is level 2 is not enough to prevent any further spread - even the steps taken by Sydney and Melbourne initially were significantly greater than our L2, the only thing any different in the last few days in the city was the fact that Kfry was closed.

I visited the supermarket today and despite a short queue outside it was business as usual inside - if somebody was contagious and visited the steps and processes being taken would have done nothing to prevent spread.

No CT cases in NZ overnight.  I think it's going to be okay - luck was on our side.

I wouldnt be celebrating just yet.

On the news last night they were championing no cases then revealed only 500 of the 2500 people had been tested.

I would say sewerage samples over the country would be getting some really close analysis, they usually take two days i think has been mentioned in the past.

I dearly hope you're wrong. But I agree, it's too early to be 100% sure.

Scanning or signing in needs to be made compulsory - nationwide.  In Sydney they very quickly found the index case and were effectively tracing early cases, but the virus has outpaced them, full lockdown was inevitable.  And they've got better compliance than we do.

NSW didn't really delay their lockdown any longer than Victoria did 3 weeks ago. They had total faith in their contact tracing, and their contact tracing worked. There becomes a point however where it's clear that contact tracing is insufficient to contain the spread.

All of this just further emphasises the truly massive risk to NZ from the lack of vaccines here. We're not winning at this despite thinking we are, and we're going need every single piece of luck possible to avoid the exact same situation happening in NZ, and right now when we've (seemingly) played Russian roulette for the umteenth time and once again won the reality is we all have to be prepared for this very scenario to happen here.

No, we haven't. Its been 18 months, its not luck.

There is a lack of vaccines here, not our fault. The luck is probably avoiding issues with the bubble. The bubble doesn't work. Add the bubble back end of the year. If we had not had this guy coming here and being infected, its still the same problem. The virus/public response means the bubble cannot work. Northern Territory has a case from BNE. It makes MIQ look like Fort Knox.

I suspect if there is an outbreak in NZ causing lockdown, they will blame people for not scanning, rather than take responsibility for not making it compulsory earlier.

Quite,... I would be more happy to ride out another week  (or perhaps until Wednesday at least) at Level 2 in Wellington, ( Hospo be damned)

If you look at Sydney you can see how fast this wildfire can move...

Best we make sure there are no hidden embers smouldering

I'm guessing that the daily wastewater testing is still all coming back -ve... which is good

We've got to hangout until late September, when all things going exceedingly well we could have 50% of the pop ( 60 per cent of eligible) double dosed..

Australians school holidays. That'll stop the weekender winter ski trips from doing the ol state-jump-hop to NZ like they caught people doing.

Great decision.

The virus has already leaked from NSW to Victoria, and given the scale of the Sydney outbreak I think more interstate spread is likely. Plus there doesn't seem to be an effective solution to stop ineligible people boarding flights originating from other states. And we don't even have Pre-departure and on arrival testing requirements... The bubble in it's current format is only really suitable when Neither country had covid-19 in the community.

Not sure why only 3 days though. The situation in NSW is going to take at least 3 weeks (potentially 6+ weeks to resolve). I speculate that the 3 day pause is only to give time to put in place testing requirements on WA, before extending the pause to other states. Might need to be some kind of announcement about a way home for kiwi's before announcing a multiweek pause too.

Some in the media are pushing dropping down a level I noticed. Some of the questions at the standup  implied that after just a few days of testing and no positive results, that we had very likely dodged another bullet. But eh DG was very clear that it is still early days yet. But if cases do result, it is very likely IMO that parts of NZ could go up to level 2.

Except it was too slow, but was obvious it had to happen. But can't see it reopening in 3 days. It seems Oz has a big problem with it's CT and between states. I just hope we don't get a whole lot of stories about people being stranded. It was obvious for the last week at least that it wasn't going well, and people took their own risk going to Oz. The PM even warned people about it when the bubble was first announced, to make sure people plan for the bubble closing.

the not-surprising reason is correctly speculated on by Baker in the second-to-last line of the article.
