Great idea that was. If you let people know it can be exploited. It will be. 46%

Officials are trying to track down more than 14,000 people who have automatically had free stays in managed isolation and quarantine.

Cabinet documents show the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has struggled to get enough information and contact details to bill one in four returnees, while its requests to move to a pay-before-stay system were declined by the Government.

The world is opening up, and within the next two months the UK, Europe and North America will be back to their new normal. This means that travel from New Zealand is going to be essential for many businesses. The government and MBIE need to address this issue, but I feel they're simply going to put it in the too hard basket like so many other things. going to continue to with a program with the objective to minimise the risk of widespread and avoidable death and suffering - rather than fold to political pressure from a persistent and selfish few who apparently  don't give a toss about others.

MBIE couldn't organise a pissup in a brewery. Considering many of the people going through MIQ are not people normally based in NZ you'd think they could have taken 5 minutes to look at their processes regarding how you can actually pay for your stay.

Bank account - tick

Credit card - sorry we don't accept it

They direct you to a web page for information about payment and your stay. How hard would it be to accept credit card payments (with the usual Westpac Govt credit card fee of 1.2% of whatever is is now). The answer from MBIE is too hard. You have to lodge an international wire transfer via SWIFT which from some US banks is an absolute PITA (I know two people who have been in this situation) and costs a lot.

The MIQ review published last week talks of farming out MIQ bookings to the private sector because MBIE seem incapable of managing it properly. Maybe that should be happening sooner rather than later..

I'd still like to see these locked down assurances, which seems unlikely given last year there were so many unknowns, as there are now. More likely to be goals. Do you have a link?

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/the-detail/300219300/the-detail-why-we-are-not-at-the-front-of-the-queue-for-vaccines

This isn't exactly a new claim that we're fleshing out here. Don't forget the government claims of "We're hitting our targets!" is dubious given they only 1) set targets this year and b) after getting intense heat from the opposition after refusing to set any targets at all - but it didn't stop them making the kind of claims like 'front of the queue' a long time ago.

So own goal? Perhaps. But as I say, more caught making assurances they probably were never in a position to credibly make. The reality is it was always going to be a long and complex process and we were always going to struggle to get supply as a small nation at the bottom of the world.

Like I say, no point in arguing the toss now - key to beating the delta variant, which will get here in some community fashion, is to have as many people vaccinated as possible as quickly as possible. Clock is ticking forwads, not backwards.

They must have made up that they were front of the queue when they arranged deals with Pfizer...

Political games. Get the government to set targets in a scenario of great uncertainty, and then make a song and dance when they don't meet those targets.

Err, so if we needed to find these people for oh I don't know, tracing a COVID case that came out of MIQ... like the northland case, we would have no idea where they are!!!!!.... OR  have Health got a contact database they are refusing to share with MBIE.....

The vast majority of people who need to pay are people only visiting NZ - so rather than being in NZ, many will be back overseas by now.

Yeah, but still its a pretty big hole to be hoping "oh they will have left the country"   esp if we had a major Delta outbreak,...

Heaven help us if we need to do any contact tracing that involves people that have recently left MIQ. This is down right incompetence.

Incompetence has been rife throughout the handling of the pandemic. I don't blame the the government for the initial incompetence but they have to take responsibility for the fact it's still occurring.

When people leave MIQ they need to give the location they are going to when they leave. but many will be there for a few days and move on.

They should have contact details of them, emails and phone numbers, so they should be able to try and contact them.

And I would suggest their IRD details...

Because if they have been resident here or are citizens, I expect all have an IRD number which is as close to national ID number that we have.

Even if they don't currently have a bank account.

They should collect email and phone numbers yes, at the start when they sign in to MIQ, then while they are there an email should be sent with a must reply link, if it bounces or no reply follow up in person.

Get it all sorted before they leave MIQ.

Once the email address has been confirmed, email them an invoice.

Cant leave the country without it being paid, get flagged at the border.

Seems pretty easy to me.

Unless they're community transmission, they've come from overseas, so must have a passport. And that *is* a national ID number.

maybe someone needs to point MBIE/MIQ to www.stripe.com , even our little old badminton club has been able to set up an account pretty much straight away.

Book a spot, put in credit card details, when you check in, you get billed, easy as. Auth bounces back, withhold passports until payment received and charge them at applicable daily rates.......

Leave it to a Govt department though to put it in the too hard basket
