Delta variant in Queensland too, including in a worker at the international airport. In the meantime, a planeload of people from Brisbane (NZ240) will be landing in Wellington just after midnight tonight.

The catch there, is many of our sources of fish. Use international crew on NZ registered ships using this method. :/

So how did two foreign-flagged boats manage to get included in the crew transfer system we set up for NZ-flagged vessels that fish in NZ's EEZ?  There's no benefit to NZ unless these boats are working under contract to NZ fishing companies (which ones?) fishing outside the EEZ.

The two boats are "deep sea" fishing Antarctic waters - for what?  Toothfish? Everything about this arrangement seems rotten to the core.

The system to expedite crew transfer - avoiding quarantine - was supposed to be "low risk".

So now they're here - literal plague ships - we are obliged morally (and possibly even legally) to "assist".  There is no true "low risk" option here. 13 out of the 18 crew - presumed to be in the highly infectious stage of Delta C-19 being transferred to an MIQ hotel with a history of failure is not a good option - just that the other options are probably worse.

Loopholes in maritime agreements

Restocking can happen at in international ports or assistance

They had the option of doing offshore - if the crew could be separated or low evacuation risks. apparently

This suggests it's slid under naval classification?!?

I get it that the risk of transmission may be lower having the crew in MIQ than leaving them on the boat - if leaving them on the boat is going to require contact - ie frequent visits to the boat by medics etc.

A Ministry of Health spokesperson said quarantining or isolating vessels offshore was an option only when positive cases could be separated from other crew members, and there was low risk of an evacuation needed.

They hardly need to be separated from each other if 16/18 have already tested positive.  If that was a valid argument, they should bring only the two not ("yet?" test confirmed) infected into MIQ.

"Low risk of an evacuation needed" probably includes a human risk. I'd definitely prefer being in a nice MIQ facility rather than stay on a stinking rustbucket full of sick people.  We seem loathe to penalise people for breaking rules, so it's not as if there'd be a lot to lose by diving over the side and swimming for freedom.

Yea so this is... sub optimal.

Do we get more passengers normally from Sydney or Qland?

Probably similar.  More Australians normally visit NZ from NSW than Qld or Vic, but I suspect that's made up for by NZers visiting Qld return at this time of year.

Yeah, no surprise. Tokyo is in a state of emergency and lets also bring in everyone from all corners of the globe.

There is some debate on magnitude of SAR-Cov2 variant differences, vs other factors such as mobility and less cautious behavior .
However, travel is the best way to spread variants around, so congregating the whole world in one place seems an obvious good idea.

Its not just athletes, but you have large numbers of support staff as well, officials, and bound to be a number of my body is a temple no vaccine types.
As we have seen with Fiji team reluctance to support their nation, it takes all sorts in sports.

10's thousands of Japanese will be working in the village and games sites to make it happen including 1000's of nurses and doctors.

Given the quality of Hotel ventilation this may be more of a worry than reported.

Like almost everyone Japan can't get vaccine supply they would like.

All these people are not going to want to be boxed up in the village after their event is over, either.

Those wondering why MIQ might be booked out for a while after this is over, of course we have 100's returning.

Looks Like Vietnam is really in trouble, with so many remote land borders it was always a difficult task.
https://e.vnexpress.net/news/news/man-gets-jail-for-sneaking-into-vietnam-and-infecting-people-with-covid-4325930.html

Vietnam put its entire southern region in a two-week lockdown starting midnight Sunday, as confirmed COVID-19 cases exceeded 3,000 for the third day in a row.
https://japantoday.com/category/world/vietnam-puts-southern-region-in-lockdown-as-surge-grows

""
According to the Ministry of Health, Vietnam has received only about 6 million of the 124 million doses of vaccine it had secured through the U.N.-backed COVAX facility and in direct orders with vaccine manufactures.

Not enough vaccine , not enough time .

Seems to be a bit grim across SE Asia. Thailand faces the same sort of problems as Vietnam with it's borders, their cases are still rising.
