South Australia's "double-ring fencing" strategy potentially saved the state from a prolonged lockdown?
(both primary and secondary contacts quarantined)

RNZ are really on the attack this morning trying to destroy the credibility of the Manukau mass vaccination event
Their news and commentary on the radio isn't much better and I'm puzzled as to what they're trying to achieve in creating the news rather than simply reporting the news. Their reporting of this reminds me so much of the Australian media who did such a successful job destroying the credibility of the AZ vaccine.
As a proof of concept for a mass vaccination event maybe the location and target audience for this was not perfect but this type of reporting by the media is exactly what we don't want in this country.
I agree, but it is curious why take up was so low. Apart from the obvious weekend activity interruption, maybe people assumed it will be a turn up and wait for ages deal?
10 of these each weekend in main centres would be a nice boost
It will be interesting to find out the real reason for the low booking turn out:
Personally I guess that a lot of people aren't opposed to being vaccinated, but aren't going to go out change their weekend plans to do so. NZ's current covid-19 free status means there isn't a real need to hurry. Hopefully these people will be picked up in 3 months or so when walk in vaccinations are widely offered. And of course there will be a big rush when NZ has an outbreak, or announces re-opening out international borders to vaccinated travelers isolation free.
From the USA it sounded like pharmacies and GP's were giving out a lot of doses, by simply asking if people had been vaccinated yet when they are there of other reasons, and if they answer no, saying they have doses they need used up, and no wait time for the injection right now.
empacher48:
If it is anything like my local community, people don’t want to get the vaccine “because the borders are closed and we don’t have any COVID in NZ”. As I have been told by more than one person, “I would get the vaccine if we had it here, since we don’t have it I don’t see any point.”
Basically the same reason I’m given why people don’t scan when going to other locations.
A down side of our own success, perhaps?
Of course, by then it'll be far too late. Same with scanning. People start scanning when cases pop up, but they're 1-2 weeks too slow (unless they have a time machine ofc)
gzt: Vaxxed recently. I was coincidentally at a pharmacy near closing time. A staff member approached me and said the centre next door had leftover shots. Apparently they start the day with more than they need, to cover any random breakage and things like that. Vaxxed. Sore arm the next day for a few hours. That's all. Next shot in three weeks.
May be worth considering a longer gap between doses?
When I had mine I requested (& got) a six week gap. Second dose now due in a week. After this article, perhaps eight weeks would have been better ...
Preprint on which the article above seems to be based is as below (but not a light read).

Yes, there is certainly lots of things pointing toward a longer gap generating better long term antibody levels....
On the 3rd of July, I received a Txt confirming that I am part of Group 3.
Advising: I will be contacted again by the end of July to book my vaccination, and to wait for my invitation.
Signed off with "Thanks for your patience."
Nothing heard since.
So many mixed messages...wait...phone...don't...rinse and repeat!

Thats the dhb
There is an active radio campaign since last week. If you are in 3. You ring the 0800 and book at your leisure.
That's the invite.
From wed, group 4 can. And on web. So errr.. call today.
You meant CDHB?
I got the same text, then got an invite text on 12 July with the link to fill in online, done

Yet another case of infection in hotel quarantine

good stuff. we should learn from that.
what does one call the NSW strategy?

this really highlights how archaic our central air conditioning/ ventilations standards are.
i think planes are much superior. i can't recall a single infection caught on a plane - i'm sure there are but they are almost unheard of. is that because of lack of tracing back to flights vs superior ventilation

Don't buy into the aviation's industries PR.
They used that line a lot early in the pandemic, despite contact tracing at that stage not being good enough to identify source of most transmission. And despite proof that the previous SARS virus had been transmitted on planes.
They widely hyped their hospital grade (HEPA) filtration as a reason not to worry about planes, despite evidence of covid-19 transmission in hospitals (which also have hospital grade transmission.
Below is an article covering transmisison of covid-19 on a plane.

Regarding hotel ventilation, "Archaic" is a bit of a stretch. They are designed to prioritise stuff like comfort, and energy efficiency, and are not designed reduce the transmission of airborne viruses. For the latter goal, you wouldn't set the system up to suck air between spaces (hallway into rooms), and you would set it up for heaps of air changes per hour.
Front page of the ODT this morning was a sob story about not being able to get out of NSW

It's worth noting that in general, for many existing (non Covid) vaccines that longer gaps between vaccine doses is always better. There are many vaccines out there given with a duration on say 6 months between doses.
Covid is an pandemic that we're trying to beat, so it's a case of weighting up potentially better immune responses vs having a fully vaccinated population.
