Batman: Negative wastewater testing in New Plymouth Sat & Sunday. More testing this week

Good. Sense of impending doom reduced by one point.

Take another point off if the headlines were worded better

Concerns that it could be spreading in Taranaki undetected.

Surprising to read other waster treatment plants in the region aren't being tested?

May be worth considering a longer gap between doses?

https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/spacing-pfizer-covid-shots-boosts-antibody-levels-after-initial-drop-study-2021-07-22/

When I had mine I requested (& got) a six week gap.  Second dose now due in a week.  After this article, perhaps eight weeks would have been better ...

...

Second dose now deferred 2 weeks (total 8 week gap).  Courtesy of the other half (once had read the article above)!

Now just need to keep fingers crossed that Delta doesn't wash up on our shores in the next 5 weeks (3 to second dose, +2 for second dose to take effect).

If it does, guess we will need to keep ourselves out of harm's way for the duration (helped by being 'rural', plus having worked from a home office for over 30 years, so that part not so difficult).

Go back. Read the article. And see who thinks it is/is concerned...

Tip. it's not MoH, nor a dr.

But they ran with the headline.. cause. Yaknow.

sbiddle: RNZ are really on the attack this morning trying to destroy the credibility of the Manukau mass vaccination event

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/447761/auckland-covid-19-mass-vaccination-health-officials-scramble-to-fill-places

More accurately, the MIT staff/student/family mass vaccination event. It was subsequently expanded unplanned by the organisers to include people from the local area. This looks like very very straight reporting to me. It's nothing like an attack article.

There are many apparent problems with the event not mentioned in the article.

Six kilometers from MIT and starting on a Friday are two that come to mind immediately. Personally I'm not anti. I don't think it will be a failure in terms of numbers. I just really really hope the lessons are learned from this, particularly around genuinely engaging.

But wouldn't they have health professionals too? We only need to look what happned in NSW when the relevant authorities didn't do what they should have done earlier, and locked down as soon as it was clear there was CT occurring.

The problem IMO is the lack of testing, as the number of tests is still low. Many people currently have colds. You won't pickup up any cases if people aren't being tested and people don't test positive. I remember in Auckland last year before the second lockdown, it may have been spreading undetected for a few weeks before someone ended up being tested.  The wastewater treatment testing was supposed to be a backstop, and it has detected the virus. .

Nice story of NZ companies contribution to fighting current and future epidemics.

How a South Auckland deep tech company grew 440% in a year

But what if a company didn’t just produce the standard clinical masks that slow Covid’s spread, but that also actively trap and kill virus particles? Chances are it would be a very popular product.

That’s one of the reasons why South Auckland company NanoLayr has grown 440% in the past year.

Know what. Not even going to quantify that. You can compare all you like. The article headline/statement is no different to them running with your opinion as a story.

UK case numbers continuing to fall sharply over the last 9 days (to the surprise of at least some experts there)

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/

Alas not so in Israel, with new cases yesterday heading towards the 1,700 mark.  The highest there since mid-March and well above their first wave peak (and 10x the Sydney number, to put that in perspective).  Daily rate of positive COVID tests is also now above 2% for first time since March.

New severe cases also now approaching levels not seen since mid- to late March (& over 70x the average a month ago).

The above are despite very high levels of adult vaccination.

Maybe AZ is the better vaccine. Somebody should tell Australia! 😂

The story lacks much detail to really know why they would even write this story. But if cases appear in the area, then they will likely have been right.

But the whole point of the sewage testing is to find areas where community transmission may be silently spreading, and we may not find cases until they are sick enough to need attention.

gzt: Vaxxed recently. I was coincidentally at a pharmacy near closing time. A staff member approached me and said the centre next door had leftover shots.

Similar experience this evening at least two hours before closing time.

Scanning. It's not working great for many people. If the scan effort is going to work - standards. Posters must be well lit, high contrast, stop using reflective embossing. If you must emboss get some proper photo matt stuff who cares if it costs $20.

Sticking it behind a reflective glass door, bad. On the tech side maybe the scan app should use torch or redeye flash by default.

I read here that when they get supplies they are diluted or some prep, and then the shots need to be used in 6 hours? Hence it makes sense to dump them in arms than bins. Be great when chemists are all equipped, a big fat sign outside saying "Vaccinating now, step inside" Every little bit helps
