[edit] And out PM gets her second dose. Her first dose was on 18/6, so she has run a 6 week, 5 day dose spacing.

Both her jabs were staged PR events, so nothing can be read into the spacing.

Obviously the decision to go outside the pfizer recommended 3-6 week band was made. In light of emerging evidence this seems fine or beneficial.

I doubt the call to move outside the recorded time frame would have been solely made to suit the PR timetable.

Oh well:

From the Age:

Public health officials and epidemiologists say the discovery of a new community case of coronavirus in Victoria is concerning and even the best-case scenario of the man having caught the virus working at a testing station poses significant challenges.

UK https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-57999362

People who were fully vaccinated in the EU or US will not need to isolate when coming to England, Scotland and Wales from an amber list country.

The change will come into force at 04:00 BST on Monday.

Currently, only people who received their jabs in the UK can avoid quarantine when arriving from amber list countries, except France.

Vermont doing well with vaccination and lifestyle

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/07/28/us/vermont-most-vaccinated-coronavirus-state/index.html

But these dancers are all vaccinated. They reside in America's most vaccinated state -- 83.7% of Vermonters 12 and over have received at least one shot, according to health officials.

Throughout Vermont, hospital Covid-19 units are mostly empty. Bars and restaurants are hopping again. In remote rural towns, diners, country stores and campgrounds are filling up.

As the national health crisis evolves into "a pandemic of the unvaccinated," in the words of US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Vermont health officials tout the Green Mountain State as the safest place in America.

Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. Both were staged media events to coincide with key points in the rollout, and as much as I'm critical of comments she has has made in relation to the rollout (insisting that it's all going perfectly to plan being one!) I have no issues with her using herself as a pawn and seeking attention for these events if it will even persuade a single extra person to get a vaccine who may not have done otherwise.

Press release:

New Zealand’s regulatory authority Medsafe has granted provisional approval of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for individuals 18 years of age and older, Acting Minister for COVID-19 Response Dr Ayesha Verrall announced today.

New Zealand secured 7.6 million doses (enough for 3.8 million people) of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine through an advance purchase agreement with the company last year.

“The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is one of four purchase agreements we have with pharmaceutical companies for COVID-19 vaccines. We took a portfolio approach to manage the risk that some vaccines might not complete trials or be approved for use in New Zealand,” Dr Ayesha Verrall said.

“We are in a fortunate position to now have three vaccines receive provisional approval. Cabinet is yet to consider whether to use the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in New Zealand.

“However this is an important step towards enabling the donation of AstraZeneca from New Zealand to Pacific countries, where we have made commitments.”

The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine requires two doses and is stored at normal fridge temperatures (2 to 8 degrees Celsius). The first delivery could be as early as late August, and officials are working closely with AstraZeneca to confirm delivery schedules.

“Our immunisation plan in New Zealand remains focused on rolling out the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. The workforce is ramping up in line with increased deliveries.

“We are on track to provide two doses of the Pfizer vaccines to everyone in New Zealand who wishes to have one, by the end of this year. No one will miss out,” Dr Ayesha Verrall said.

239 new cases in Sydney.

Efforts to contain the spread are failing.  Lockdown hasn't been working.  They've failed so far.  I doubt there's any way back short of an absolutely thorough lockdown with almost no "exceptions".  I doubt they'll do what's needed, so Sydney then the whole of Australia is in deep trouble, and NZ is going to be facing some serious hard problems with keeping our border secure.

Even if they can "rush out" vaccines at some incredible rate, they'll never keep up with the spread of the virus due to poor efficacy of vaccines after a single dose, and the delay before high levels of immunity develop after a second dose are achieved.

And only 81 of those cases were fully isolated whilst infectious

AUS news last night a reporter asked people in the street what they thought of lockdown. Two weren't that happy about it but it has to be done, the third said there should not be a lockdown, Australians are mature enougbh to make the right decisions about their safety

This makes me genuinely sad.

Hanlons razor could explain a fair few of these earlier on, but one can safety assume more than a fair few of those are deliberately in public while infectious.

Totally correct. Delta is out of control and I seriously doubt they can get this under control. Worse case scenario means potentially thousands of hospitalisations and more deaths. Currently NSW Health said there were 182 people with Covid who had been admitted to hospital, with 54 in ICU. Just 14 days ago that figure was 73 in Hospital and 18 in ICU.

New South Wales
Not totally out of control, as that would be geometric growth and very nasty.

Looking at peaks internationally far worse rates per million people are possible.

You might say that more would be expected considering stupid protest events designed to drive up infection.
Once these people have eliminated themselves numbers might moderate.

Problem is any additional control measures will not show for a week or two.

Interesting that it can all be traced back to one index case who's work it was to drive (infected) American air crew from the airport to a hotel, and chose to be neither vaccinated or to wear PPE.

I feel sorry for him, while I'm sure he'll be deeply regretting what's happened because he did not do what he could or should have done, he should not have been "allowed" to do the incredibly stupid things he did.  He could not be prosecuted because he did not break any laws. He is just a cab driver - not an expert on disease transmission. Whoever was in charge of that part of their pandemic response is ultimately culpable, probably politicians, and the only way they could be held to account for their negligence is at the polls.  In these days where parts of the media ("most of" in Australia) seem to be so partisan, I don't expect that's going to happen.

Then there's the ongoing completely botched response since the moment CT was first detected.  Gladys Berejiklian is (or was) a popular premier, but her party had a very small majority in NSW. They depended on support from the Nationals, the Nationals are quite hard right-wing, they'd already threatened in the past to cross the floor to take down bills that concerned protecting "the environment".

(apologies - politics - but they matter)
