Now THAT'S what I call a high-impact publicity shot!

To make a fair chunk of them comply will require measures like vaccine passports to attend bars and sporting or religious events. I doubt any politician has the spine to go that far.
French politicians seem to have the guts to set a *balance between minority freedoms and common good:
*that's with the scales tilted firmly in favour of not making concessions to nutters.
Ardern has confirmed that she does not have the guts to do this.

In those countries where delta is in the wild it's a very good move but here? With no community transmission it would seem like a pointless restriction.

Until the inevitable big outbreak.

At which point everybody seems to agree it's straight to level 4.

Yup, we are playing with time we are extremely lucky to have. If we don't make the most of it, that's on us. We'll be a laughing stock if we don't use months of a head-start against the Delta strain to get a decent swathe of the population vaccinated.
Buster:
In the medium term we will end up with 2 - 3 million doses left over. Do we have freezer capacity for that much?
Something that has been pointed out a few times on here by people is that if you look at the data, freezer capacity is the reason we've had to push back delivery of the last of the vaccines. Everything was due for delivery by September, but the PM has said recently that delivery of "most vaccines" will now be here by the end of October.
We would have had needed greater capacity than 4m to have stored everything had it all arrived by the end of September.

Pretty much at this point, New Zealand should open up vaccinations.
Yes and no. I agree that there should be greater eligibility, but right now there isn't the capacity right now to vaccinate everybody.
Australia have decided now that vaccinating younger people is key - I've argued this for months now that once the at risk are vaccinated that we shouldn't stick to age brackets.
The number of contacts younger people have on a daily basis is far greater than many older people, so if you're looking to limit CT this becomes a key issue. Simply having a much greater cross section of society vaccinated can do a lot to limit potential CT.
I just looked now and there are multiple slots in Wellington available today from 8am - so every one of these slots not taken is one less person who could have been vaccinated.
What we should be doing is ensuring more front line essential workers are vaccinated. With no shortage of vaccines right now there should be much greater targeting of these - because when CT does happen here people like supermarket workers become out front line, and we know from Australia that places like supermarkets have become locations of interest for CT, despite mask wear being essential. I don't know how many rideshare, taxi and bus drivers we have in NZ, but they face risks as well during CT and are still deemed essential workers under any L4 lockdown and can't necessarily maintain social distancing.
We don't seem to be doing a lot to prepare for CT here. Yes none of of want that to happen but right now we have to be totally realistic that we can't keep playing Russian roulette and winning, and that Delta has even changed the rules of Russian roulette.
On an unrelated note to any other post in this 1507 page thread - I had my first flight yesterday with 2x anti maskers on board. I was unfortunate enough to have to sit next to one proudly holding her self printed "I won't wear a mask because I'm an idiot" card.
I would have had probably had 30 odd flights since the rule came in and it's actually the first time I've seen anybody on a plane not wear one.

On a 3/4 full bus every day I see about four people not wearing masks. I guess some might have actual need to not wear one, or have forgotten. Except one person who seems to "forget" every single day.

Why?
We're a free country. With no incentive or motivation for potentially the last 10 - 15% of adults to be vaccinated we may face a strumbling block that we struggle to overcome. It's pretty clear from other countries (the US being a classic example) that restricting unvaccinated people from high risk environments to protect everybody is a great way to get people vaccinated.
I don't have an issue with people who don't want to be vaccinated. Sure I think they're idiots, but in a free country that's their right. In the same way it's the right of a government to protect the people, and under our H&S obligations it's the responsibility of every company to ensure they do everything that can to protect staff and customers from harm, and eliminating that risk of harm to staff and customers/visitors by preventing unvaccinated from being on their premises is a logical step.

How do they feel about being thrown off the flight or arrested at the destination?
