"the person travels frequently between Auckland and Coromandel - however that information has not yet been confirmed by officials."

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-coronavirus-case-identified-in-auckland-community-no-link-to-border-or-miq/JQEPSWCF7HZBEYK472MDETKMQE/

A well known media presenter is picking the North island to be at level 4 & the south island to be at level 2. Unclear if this is a credible leak, or just speculation. Seems plausible if frequent inter-regional travel of the case is confirmed.

Anyway the press conference is now just an hour away.

I presume they're doing waste water testing across the major centres in NZ?

Fred99:

Mulling over things, by the time of the press conference tonight, we'll hopefully know:

The person's movements.

Symptoms and estimate of how long they'd been infectious in the community.

Immediate contacts who can be quarantined.

Immediate sites of concern to be notified.

Where they'd been likely to get infected, but sequencing probably won't be complete, so there may be no certainty about that.

100% of cases picked up at the border in recent weeks have been delta, so it's a fairly sure bet this case will be.

No wastewater testing has revealed traces - at least in areas monitored, so it's probably not a tip of an iceberg of undetected CT case.

Fingers crossed a short lockdown announced and commenced immediately may do the trick.  Rather that than announce a longer lockdown initially, which I guess may incentivise people to travel - home, to the bach, whatever.

Thanks for the laugh!

@frankv I don't believe that vaccination should be compulsory, however, if someone chooses not to vaccinate then society can and should elect to place restrictions on them. Freedom comes with responsibilities.

I think I’ll give up taking annual leave. Yet another block about to get nullified by a lockdown. At least I managed to get some urgent domestic matters sorted this morning.

As for Aucklanders fleeing lockdown. I could rush off to the beach in the middle of winter, with only limited 3G data, one fan heater and limited TV. Or stay at home with fibre broadband and SkyTV and streaming services with the heat pump set to a comfortable temperature. I have a list of things I was going to do around the house during my leave anyway. So now all I need is some sunshine.

We'll see in an hour I guess.  Do you think that the plans for a hard / fast lockdown were hot air - or that (some/too many) Aucklanders will flee, even if the city is locked down from say midnight?

Exactly. I am fortunate to have a warm comfortable home with a nice yard and gardens. I might think differently if I lived in a small apartment, We have our caravan parked at home so can add some variety and spend some nights in that and pretend we are on holiday.

Where wastewater is being tested

Wastewater is currently being sampled at least once a week from many sites around the country, including Wellington, Hamilton, Christchurch, Rotorua, Queenstown and several sites in Auckland. In July, sites in Whangarei, Dunedin, Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Nelson, Taupo, Gisborne, Napier and Invercargill will be added. The Institute of Environmental Research and Science (ESR) tests these samples at their Wellington lab to determine if they can detect SARS-CoV-2.

Oh for goodness sake - bad timing for the press conference:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/126103151/more-power-cuts-transpower-declares-grid-emergency

Transpower has warned of a “grid emergency” on Tuesday evening.

It said there was insufficient generation and transmission capacity to meet electricity demand and provide for contingencies in the North Island between 5pm and 7.30pm.

@Fred99 to be fair on Transpower this is the first year we have had winter. They really couldn’t plan for this unprecedented event.

With all this covid and lockdown talk, anyone else get the feeling we could be heading into a lockdown very soon?

I never thought we could be heading into a lockdown after just 5 days after making this post.

No for the detail in depth.

I have NO DOUBT a lot of people will be frantically fleeing Auckland given previous responses!
