^ I got a letter dated the 11th August advising me of my ability to get the vaccination, it arrived on the 20th

Do people in the South Island think that it is possible for us to move down a level depending how the next few days pan out? Or because we need the North Island for a bunch of food that is either sent on a plane or driven down (as well as other things) would would start to see shortages

I think there is a big difference between level 3 and 4, and they still had people returning home only a few days ago. The problem is if a case then pops up in the SI from someone who has returned from Auckland.  It could undo a lot of the work etc if we go out of lockdowns too early, which has happened before.

DS248:

Apart from the scanning and mask requirements, it worked like that at our local NW previously, even in L3 (bags left outside, pack them yourself outside).

Might not be easy to get delivery slots to suit.

Was hopeless with it like that at the crappy little new world near me last time, since they never bothered to level the carpark you have to have one hand on the trolly at all times so it doesnt roll away, and then somehow bag and move things into the car with one hand. I gave up and just put the stuff in the tray of the ute and drove home slowly last time. Total cluster to not allow bags.

I now see that Z and Mobil are doing Coffees. I can just see someone using it as an excuse to go out and get petrol or make a trip to the supermarket.

What is odd is in some of the states where they have had Delta, they have only had very small numbers, but maybe they are using social distancing more as part of normal life. NZ wasn't, it was party central based on some of the videos of venues where there have been cases. But if NZ has indeed had cases since the 7th, then I would have thought there would have been quite a few people who had cold symptoms who hadn't bothered to get tested.  I think about 50% of people don't show symptoms. I don't think the government plugged the message enough, that if you have cold symptoms, get tested for Covid. There are a lot of negative stories questioning whether it is now possible to eliminate Delta, and how no other pace as managed to eliminate it. When it is obviously possible.

Undoubtedly we had cases since the 7th, and yes, too much hassle, its just a cold. But lockdown is there to catch all good people and all not so careful people. We can certainly eliminate it, thats down to the lockdown. We aren't going from 5 to 10 to 30 to 80, so its looking under some control.

It's official - at 1595 pages, this discussion is now longer than the notorious "The Former President Of The USA: Donald Trump impeached twice" thread (a mere 1594 pages)  🙂

Yeah, it took 4 years to clear the Trump pandemic!

My wife went to our local New World this morning.

They won't let people take bags into the store. You have to scan before entering. You have to wear a mask. You have to leave with your groceries, collect your bags and bag them yourself at the car.

She found it unpleasant so I suggested we just stick to deliveries from now on.

I might be wrong but that rings a bell from March 2020. Ive been twice but just for a couple of things, so didn't take a bag or take notice inside. I never found it inconvenient to pack bags at the car, its one of many inconvenient things that I just accept as part of the lockdown. Small price to pay IMHO.

Level 3 seems to be to be little different to Level 4. Bubbles, exercise near home, no travel between regions, no meeting up still all apply. All I can see is if a business can operate contactlessly and employees can social distance, they can operate contactlessly. My only need right now is a garden centre, and that wont cater for L3, so seems much the same. Macca's and butchers I guess can do L3

Someones either not using the same book as last year, or pushing the limits

That's why cafes were closed. Self prep + congregation

I don't think you can make any assumpotions from the lack of exponential growth. That didn't happen in Australia either.

There appears to still be a testing backlog, and until we're on top of that it's pretty hard to draw any conclusions IMHO.

What is pretty clear from comments this morning by the govt is that cases today are going to go a lot higher today.

Australia will be changing course.

they will vaccinate to 70-80% and come out of lockdown. presumably referring to NSW at this stage

at the moment they are at 30% fully vaccinated 52% had 1 dose https://www.9news.com.au/national/coronavirus-nsw-update-latest-covid-numbers-august-22-vaccination-rates/451d4ea4-1836-440f-9977-c7137b36fd78

A lot of countries are looking at Iceland now to see what the post Covid world will look like, and it would seem Australia are simply another country who have decided they are happy with what they see - unlike NZ who still believe that elimination is possible long term.

Can't see how that is "changing course" - that's consistent with the plan Morrison announced many weeks ago.

"70-80%" vaccinated isn't going to work very well, presuming that means only 70-80% of "eligible" population.  The UK has ~90% of eligible people vaccinated (~62% of total population) and still has big issues.

SMH has a headline this morning that "more than 200 children" were diagnosed with C-19 over the weekend.  They are going to be superspreaders if school is back, so with an inadequate vaccination rate, endemic C-19 is going to cause big problems for the health system (translated - a lot of people will get very sick).

Fair enough, I just thought that there was record testing happening, and that while people arent getting results when they expect them, that any positives would be showing up in the numbers. I also expect them to grow, from what has spread up until lockdown occurred

Yeah SMH reported yesterday SM has backed the Premieres plan of Sept for now, with 70% target drop despite current situation is basically what it is reinforcing.

sbiddle: unlike NZ who still believe that elimination is possible long term.

That's only true if "long term" is defined by "until vaccination rates are adequate" and high vaccination rates needed aren't achievable.

Elimination until that's achieved is the right decision. If that option has been closed - as appears to be the case in Aus - then sure, they're painted into a corner they can't get out of.  The "live with C-19" policy in NSW is an abject disaster - 2 months of lockdown and disruption, and they're in a worse position than they've ever been in - including having to deal with riots.

I'm sick of foreign economists and politicians distorting facts then pointing the finger at NZ's response in order to defend their utter failure containment measures.
