LOL, true, NZ is often ambulance at the bottom of the cliff over many things. But IMO this is pretty much a key thing. Vaccination is all very well, but living with the virus and opening up is going to need a lot of extra health resources, espeically over time as vaccinations become less effective. IMO we should be importing qualified people to work in hospitals now, and importing equipment.

Agree.

But there was an article on stuff about this a couple of days ago. Iirc We're going to just cope.

Edit - article says they tried but nobody is coming

Except instead of being an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, we adopted an elimination strategy that worked, and undoubtedly saved well in excess of 10,000 lives between the time of implementing the policy, and now.

Said by every country on the planet with the possible exception of North Korea over the past 18 months.

Avoiding demand on ICU was, and still remains, a much better strategy.

Oblivian:

Batman: Got into factory?

Factory can operate in level 4? Looks like at factory the day before lockdown.

That was a while ago...

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-coronavirus-delta-outbreak-sistema-factory-closed-after-employee-tests-positive/E3NGYJYF6XVUCNORKY7RIVVQ6M/

That is quite potentially an 'exhibit B' of her comments today if they knew about it early on.

And there is to be focus on businesses self classing as essential as a result.

It has always been you are considered essential, if you supply essential chains. That however. Would be as debatable. as most examples currently operating that aren't pharmaceutical or supermaket or fuel based.

Little awkward after this

Plastic boxes are essential ... hmm...

I love it when people put words in my mouth. Let's roll with it.

The modellers will be crunching the numbers to give to the govt if and when it decides we should open.

But I'm not the expert, I linked the expert who was interviewed.

There hasn't been much discussion of how NZ is going to live with virus once we have reach peak vaccination. We are going to need more ICU beds with staff, and more hospital capacity in general, and there are going to be more deaths from it. That is going to be the key thing IMO. But we aren't hearing much about this. Many other countries that are going to be living with it, including Oz,  have far better health capacity then poor old NZ.  We may get to a high vaccination number by Christmas, and then no doubt there will be calls from certain business sectors to open up the country to the rest of the world. But that doesn't look like it can happen until we sort out how to deal with people getting the virus and needing treatment.

Sort of needs to be user pays. Overseas Business or pleasure activities that potentially result in ongoing virus problems entering NZ need to chip in a bit upfront for when it all hits the fan. Sort of like insurance.

Most concerning statistic for me was that only 50% of new cases were family contacts.

The statement was:

... "more than three quarters of cases yesterday were contacts of known cases.  And if we break that down further, more than half of known cases yesterday were in fact household cases"

So? I read the article and he states:

"The problem was, the whole world wanted ICU nurses at the moment, Carr said, and since they took *four to five years to train, recruiting internationally was the only way to quickly increase those numbers."

(*2-6 years for a registered nurse part time)

How's that different to what I said?

The modeller's numbers are effectively meaningless except as a guide to what may happen if our short-medium term) elimination strategy fails - which at present vaccination rate would be abject disaster even if we topped the OECD for ICU beds.  If it doesn't fail, then they're useful to plan an exit strategy, best estimates based on information available at that time (which is not available now).

TeaLeaf:  I know some of what I said might be a little off key

It's not "off key".  It's a festering pile of politically-biased abject horse sh*t that doesn't belong in this thread.

OP seems more frustrated than politically motivated. It's not a very good post but I don't think it's fair to label it as politically biased.

If you think it doesn't belong in the thread report it and the mods can remove it if they agree.

MadEngineer: People with any potential risks from blood clots including any examples of family history are being turned away from being given Astra Zeneca in Aussie. Something to consider if you’re intending on getting a cross-dose.

Those poor people being turned away from an effective vaccine that could prevent them from being really sick. Whoever is turning them away should be more up to date with their vaccines. If you're administering the vaccine Australia have their own covid certification process. At least one person in the facility administering the Astrazeneca should know the guidelines.

As a reference you can read here: basically, Clots not a reason to avoid AZ

Seems the clots from Astrazeneca are formed differently from the normal clots seen from other causes. And from what I've read elsewhere it's the younger age group at risk of clots but even then it's not at a high rate. That's in line with ATAGI's advice for over 60 year olds to get Astrazeneca. But when there's lots of covid around like there was in the UK, then you're more at risk of clots and bad outcomes from covid so you're better off getting Astrazeneca regardless of age which is why the advice differs for different regions in Australia.

Well...
Things you did not think you would need.

14 Portable Morgues Heading To Central Florida Hospitals Amid ‘Unprecedented Deaths’
After overwhelming numbers of COVID-19 cases, hospitals are running out of room for bodies.
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/14-portable-morgues-florida-covid_n_612afa32e4b0f562f3deddb9

""
“The number of deaths right now is unprecedented,” Drawdy told the newspaper. “What we’re hearing from the hospitals is that the death count right now is higher than it has ever been.”

AdventHealth, which is getting three of the portable morgues, said in a statement to WESH Channel 2 that the system is also renting refrigerated units at 10 sites in Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole and Volusia counties, noting that they are also being filled.

Florida Mayor Urges Water Limits Because Of COVID-19 Surge
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/coronavirus-outbreak-orlando-water-limits_n_61201459e4b0e5b5d8ea021c

""
The mayor of the Florida city of Orlando asked residents on Friday to stop watering their lawns and washing their cars for at least a week, saying water usage needed to be cut back because of the recent surge of COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The Orlando Utility Commission treats the city’s water with liquid oxygen and supplies that ordinarily go toward water treatment have been diverted to hospitals for patients suffering from the virus, Mayor Buddy Dyer said.

“We acknowledge that the No. 1 priority for the liquid oxygen should be for hospitals,” Dyer said at a news conference.

Sort of shutting the stable door stuff though, isn't it, when your country is at Level 4 because it got out into a largely unvaccinated population?

Not really. Vaccines wont help an outbreak, it still spreads. If we all got vaccinated, the reality is that's its hard getting past 60%, and places that have such as Iran, are still having major issues. We are 1/4 fully vaccinated and 1/2 one jab, thats pretty good so far. The 50% fully vaccinated is one jab away

Vaccines were designed to prevent severe disease, death, ICU, hospital & nice if prevents symptoms too, long covid etc.

Nobody cared about spread of a "cold" and that's caused by a virus. Do I care if I get a cold in the long run? Nope.

What I do care about is after everyone's been offered a vaccine by end of year, and if we still have some % unvaccinated that were they to get sick they'd place a strain on healthcare, do the rest of us that got vaccinated have to go back into lockdown or whatever restrictions because those people decided not to get vaccinated? Would seem unfair.
