mattwnz: I would take todays big drop in numbers with a grain of salt, because historically less people get tested at the weekend. This is backed up by the official by numbers being tested.

I'd be less pessimistic.

The drop in weekend testing which definitely is a thing is probably mainly from fewer people in the community choosing to get tested because maybe they've got some symptoms etc. But if you've been contacted by MoH because you're a very high risk contact, and they're telling you that you must isolate and get tested, then I doubt you'll be waiting until Monday.

Anyway it's only one day with lower case numbers than the trend, but statistically meaningless for making a predictions about what to expect tomorrow or the next days etc.

Northland moving to level three at 23:59 on Thursday if all waste water testing is negative. Auckland to remain in lever four for another two weeks with a review on 13th September.

This is going to be a very brutal two weeks, work-wise and household wise.

Fred99: y - less likely to attend "mass infection events", rock concerts, night clubs, large parties etc..

Because it's circulating most widely in less at risk groups, and so many are vaccinated (thus also much less "at risk") the case fatality rate is much lower.

That does make sense. Again the misinformation I got was Delta is far more contagious but the symptoms are less severe. So the death rate is only lower due to the things you mentioned? And the symptoms are far worse?

Yeah I head ya about helping our cause. It feels like a lot of leading Western countries just gave up, very generic blanket comment, but I do hope we get to a stage in the next 20 years where herd immunity, either by catching the virus or preferably vaccines.

Its probably the next gen of babies that carry anti bodies from this, who will be the ones to step out of its shadow.

Going to watch youtube on how the spanish flu died out, that was a train wreck, yet within a decade (during WW1 etc) humans climbed out of it, a war, then mass inflation in many parts of the world, so Im fairly confident this is not the pandemic Mr Gates was refering to when asked the most likely cause of human exstinction. I think he was thinking something as bad a Ebola but as contagious as Covid. In saying all that, I dont want it, not until Ive at least been vaccinated.

My plan prior to covid was to sell up one house and buy something like a Rapido 60 trimaran to sale around NZ, Aus (I miss spearfishing the GBR for coral trout etc) and Polynesia. I guess the only thing stopping that plan would be if property prices plummeted, which is highly possible, although Auck lost 14% then plateud for 4 years prior to rising again and isnt above the historical growth AVG like a lot of NZ that had no correction in 2016 and then nothing for four years, Who knows. I digress.

Thank you for correcting my misinformation, will be interesting to find out the factual outcome of that Covid vaccine death though.

Brutal is a good word to describe it - I don't disagree with Auckland locked down for another two weeks, I am however referring to my couch, 24/7 snacks for the two kids and our sanity, lol.

Just do what you need to do to get to the next day. You aren't going to permanently maim a little one by letting it cry or having it go to sleep on your chest on the couch so your partner can rest. Good luck.

Oh man loving family has never been tested worldwide like this before ;-p

I hear ya. We just let others have the TV/Lounge and we play a lot of Kniffel (german version of yahtzee) in the "Family" room facing a lovely garden with a gorgeous shaped pohutukawa, the mrs has a variety of bird feeders out, watching native NZ birds has become my sanity in lock down. We keep the Binos handy and have been identifying local Tuis, Thats what life has resorted too.

And just because everywhere else is going to level 3 doesnt make it much more bearable for them, you can access a couple more things, hardly sanity saving.

I presume these are fundamentals of why the Govt has launched that $1M Covid sanity funding. :-)

Yes, and not just for those in the Auckland area. There will be plenty of others sharing the pain. Auckland's level 4 still significantly affects some people in the level 3 areas outside of Auckland especially those that need to travel to or via Auckland for work and those especially who are not an essential worker.

Let's hope things resolve quickly so that we all can move back to level 1 as soon as possible.

I've started internally referring to this part of the press conference as "Neve's drawn me another picture to show you" :)

Level 1 as it was should be gone for the foreseeable future. Public masking should probably become the norm.

I don't disagree, and it is possible we may never return to our previous level 1 environment for years. It will be a 1.5.  But  I do wonder why we ever went down to  level 1 when MIQ was still a big risk, and we were told the it would leak back in. If we had restricted public gatherings to under 100 people, and had social distancing etc in place,  then this outbreak could have been far smaller. But then there would have been people complaining that there is no covid, so why do this. Because it is the price we pay for travelling to other countries.

How old are the kids?

I have started preparing one of these for my seven year old each day (the work she gets from her school can be finished in half an hour or so).  I Rotate the tasks through the week with the first four rows being her school provided work.  She can choose the order and if she doesn't finish the work it isn't the end of the world.  But if she comes up to me and says I'm bored or I don't know what to do and she hasn't finished its an auto timeout in her room for 15 minutes.  My three year old is glued to her shoulder during the activities and if the 7 year old is on a computer the 3 year old will be doing duolingo/painting on the old ipad or in a book (or playing lego/duplo)

I have also been setting up zoom chats with her friends which keeps her busy for 40 minutes.

I can't see how it can only be two weeks. I think it will be 3-4. They want to make sure it is truly eliminated, and not just suppressed. But I am guessing if they came out and said it could be up to 3-4 weeks, then there would be an uproar. So saying a few weeks and then checking how it is tracking is the best approach. But I think many people must realize that it is likely to be longer, simply based on what happened last year.
