Fred99:

mattwnz: I would take todays big drop in numbers with a grain of salt, because historically less people get tested at the weekend. This is backed up by the official by numbers being tested.

I'd be less pessimistic.

The drop in weekend testing which definitely is a thing is probably mainly from fewer people in the community choosing to get tested because maybe they've got some symptoms etc. But if you've been contacted by MoH because you're a very high risk contact, and they're telling you that you must isolate and get tested, then I doubt you'll be waiting until Monday.

Anyway it's only one day with lower case numbers than the trend, but statistically meaningless for making a predictions about what to expect tomorrow or the next days etc.

The thing I noticed was vaccination numbers also dropped significantly yesterday. But maybe that was just because less places were open to do it?

GR did say that they would start to limit vaccinations if supply started to drop off, to prevent the risk of running out before new stock arrives.

PM said we have 840k on hand. At 40k per day, that is 21 days.

Does anyone know why at the Covid standups, the PM holds up small graphs on small bits of paper. She did the same thing today.  It has happened on a regular basis and people are turning them into memes.  Rather than displaying them on a large TV display screen behind them, or it being displayed on the screen. My issue is that you can't see the figures in detail.

Yes, and not just for those in the Auckland area. There will be plenty of others sharing the pain. Auckland's level 4 still significantly affects some people in the level 3 areas outside of Auckland especially those that need to travel to or via Auckland for work and those especially who are not an essential worker.

Let's hope things resolve quickly so that we all can move back to level 1 as soon as possible.

Level 1 as it was should be gone for the foreseeable future. Public masking should probably become the norm.

I don't believe we can operate as a country at level 2 long term, plus I don't see the population as a whole putting up with it either. Sure there may be some small changes to level 1 but there will have to be a return to level 1.

Interesting Doco on Aussie during the Spanish flu, wow NZ sounded shot at the time. Border quarantine was effective, until somebody messed up and the virus entered, much like with the opening, or more to the point not closing, the recent Aus/NZ travel bubble.

They were kind of whimsical at the end of the documentary about the cure saying it wasnt cured and ended up much like the seasonal flu, not quite sure about that part. But definitely very similar issues and resolutions as with covid.

and this one from Cambridge on the origin, which sounds very very similar to Covid or any other novel virus, except this one killed 50 million and that was 100 years ago with a much lower population. Ok this one states it was last known around 1957, we did "live" with it. The last 4 minutes of this next one is eerily questioning of why we havnt had another, just 1 year before Covid occured. Could NZ survive with closed borders indefinitely? Obviously it may impact inflation and property market crashes, but just curious given how effective it was, while it was closed.

When you're hitting 80,000 to 90,000 vaccinations per day it's only 10 days or so.

Yep that is concerning. Have they said anymore on diverting doses to Auckland?

Is there any way to see how many doses have been given during this last outbreak, to provinces outside Auckland?

TeaLeaf: Totally. I would take Saturdays result of 83 with a grain of salt given 70 of them were from the one group of people.

Are you sure? I read that 70% of ALL cases are Samoan from the Church cluster. Not from the 83. Happy to be corrected.

having it go to sleep on your chest on the couch so your partner can rest. Good luck.

This sounds amazing, where do I sign up?

Unfortunately we have literally in the last week started the first big sleep regression and not being able to lean on inlaws (one set only 5km away but we can't lean on for support to and the other stuck in Chch and unable to travel back) is going to be a huge mountain to climb on our own.

Really hoping we get to next week and it's all good news, but that latest exposure event in Massey (had to just around the corner from where we live and easy for us to grasp how bad that might be) has really dented the mood in the house. We're somewhat resigned to this being awful.

No worries. Its my belief that many of the cases are already locked down, and are from home contacts, expected, and not in the wild. Numbers aside, the same effect.

But aren't we receiving 300000 doses per week from the vaccine manufacturers? So the drawdown on the 840k is the difference between 300k and the weekly jabs total.
Also if we drop back to the 350k planned target we will only drawdown 50k per week.

Sincerely hope you both and the wee one can box on over the next bit, which will hopefully not drag on. Take care.
