It's quite strange. We've had compulsory masks everywhere for the last 18ish months. It's really not that big an imposition to wear a mask inside.

If my 7 year old daughter could wear a mask at school every day for the last 12 months I don't see the big deal about making indoor masking compulsory everywhere.

Very strange. I assumed it was a slam dunk for masks at all indoor locations, and scanning, at all locations. After all the caution caution caution, I find the "new" Level 2 a bit weak. While SI is supposedly clear, as are most locations except AKL, NZ has an active outbreak right now.

That could be relaxed if and when we go back to normal with no Covid here except at MIQ (but mandatory scanning still)

Wow, ups to your daughter. The new generation that may do better.

Meanwhile a large percentage of local community here, has for the last couple of hours been screaming 'why should we, there is none in the south island. Be level 1 already and get on with it' and asking why people are supporting that there is still a requirement.

Kiwis. Suck.

Ive come to realise that were are a little insular here. (in these threads) The wider world, and NZ doesnt see it the same. So, Im not really sure what's normal. Its probably normal to be so so about the Levels if its not here if I put myself in the shoes of the less informed. Lets face it, some people probably have more serious daily worries in their lives than 20 cases of Covid out of 5 million. Thats why scanning everywhere needs to be like seat belts, irregardless of 20 cases a day or for us in the SI, no cases for 310 days. For a while the next big thing could be around the corner.

This is what I don't understand. The governments reasoning seems to be that because Covid isn't in the community when we go down to level 2, then Masks in schools is not required. Even though the MOH recommends them. However the virus is always up to 2 weeks ahead, and by the time a case is picked up, the virus may have already infected hundreds, as what has happened in this case. Especially with NZs very low rate of testing.  Mask use potentially slows down that spread so could reduce the period of future lockdowns. IMO schools have proven to be a high risk area, and are often where clusters occur.

More like slack Kiwi's not mysteries. If these 33 scanned or kept records it should not be hard to trace the cause. Similarly the others who gave it to the 33 probably the same, my assumption. We are now dealing with the less interested, so less clues to investigate. The low level of higher hanging fruit.

Wonder if this means family can return from Chch where they have been stuck before L4 hit Auckland? They haven't been able to make it back yet so have hunkered down through L4 down there.

Nope. They'll have to stay where they are..

There are no issues returning to your normal home under L3 - I know several people who have travelled from the South Island back to the North Island, one on the first day last week after we entered L3 on the ferry, and another who flew.

Health order 10 has replaced 9

I do see this being challenged by the astute. You will note despite the word 'mandatory' used often, there appears to still be no backing for it. (face covering use)

Order 11 doesn't seem to yet exist online and is presumably what will come into play tonight.

It's going to be very interesting to see the wording around mask wear, there is already plenty of confusion out there right now particularly with nobody knowing definitively what the requirements are for some places such as gyms.

Why does the government and MoH have to make things so confusing?

It seems the AM show have finally got to the bottom of mask use in gyms. After the PM saying in her interview on the show last hour that masks were required they'd had a lot of people contact the show seeking clarification.

AM show reporting an update from DPMC saying that mask use is not required in gyms providing you have social distancing. It's no wonder there is no much confusion around when the rules just aren't clear.

With these 20 new cases over the last few days; and most of them being household contacts - do I as a middle aged European living in the South Island have a large misunderstanding of just how large households are in Auckland?

Also good to see that the Alert Level 2 page was finally updated; I was checking every few hours

Though as above, the use of some words makes the rules so confusing.

I'll stick to some basics - outside of home and work I'll be wearing a mask and I'll continue to scan in everywhere I go.

I assume that it they have decided mandating mask would be a step too far politically. Kiwis tend to be passive/aggressive, so we will protest the small things ( ie mask wearing). It will also let the anti-mask/anti-vax/anti-lockdown brigade from the US a further foot in the door, similar to the anti-gun laws

Like the QR scanning - make it non compulsory, see what the uptake is ( likely to be higher hopefully than the QR codes as it is a visible requirement ) and if it doesn't work, then make it mandatory

Well the person who tested positive at Middlemore over the weekend was apparently in a household of ~10. Certainly not uncommon for some families, and some large houses could also easily have that many flatmates.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

UK confirmed cases passed 7 million yesterday although modelling from Cambridge Uni suggest the real number is 17 million, 30% of the population (source BBC).

Possibly. The nuclear family tends to be a European thing, the extended family is often the norm elsewhere. Perception of how common extended families are probably depends where you live in the SI and how much you mix with others.
