In South Auckland in particular, it wouldn't be uncommon for there to be more than one generation of family occupying the same household with multiple beds to a room and garage used etc, a mix of their culture (looking after elderly) and economic necessity.

I'm pleased the gym thing has been sorted, waiting on ours to release their interpretation / guidelines but I'm pleased to be able to get back in some capacity and not to have to wear a mask. Being part of fortress South Island, its not an uncommon feeling for this to all be "an Auckland problem" but equally it is widely accepted (at least in the people I encounter at sports clubs or in business dealings) that we are better to be cautious now than sorry later.

nzkiwiman:

With these 20 new cases over the last few days; and most of them being household contacts - do I as a middle aged European living in the South Island have a large misunderstanding of just how large households are in Auckland?

Also good to see that the Alert Level 2 page was finally updated; I was checking every few hours

Though as above, the use of some words makes the rules so confusing.

I'll stick to some basics - outside of home and work I'll be wearing a mask and I'll continue to scan in everywhere I go.

The latest North & South magazine had an article about housing in NZ and the author said in her work she has come across as many as 27 people living together in South Auckland. Probably the extreme end but multi generation living is normal in many cultures. I couldn't think of anything worse than having my elderly parents living with me!

AM show reporting an update from DPMC saying that mask use is not required in gyms providing you have social distancing. It's no wonder there is no much confusion around when the rules just aren't clear.

I'd say it's likely that social distancing in most gyms would be a fiction. I look at vapers as demonstration of how far the cloud around somebody is likely to be.

The instructor for our Pilates group has advised that she'll be operating again from 12th and masks will be required if we go. Her choice.

It seems the AM show have finally got to the bottom of mask use in gyms. After the PM saying in her interview on the show last hour that masks were required they'd had a lot of people contact the show seeking clarification.

Thanks for that clarification.

So virus contraction from touch, sweat etc is completely debunked now?

I'd have thought it also was on proviso the air ventilation was of standard to reduce aerosols to an adequate level as well?

A gym with the amount of aerosols being spat into the air, I'd have thought is a far better breeding ground than a supermarket for example?

Pages still being tidied up, reflecting the change in wording (and legality) for mandatory vs not since it is categories, not all.

Sporting figures lumped into 'limits apply' and it's own section rather than referencing differing scenario numbers on one page

Along with adjustments in staff distancing etc.

Update from the Hendy incident https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/that-wasnt-good-tvnz-cameraman-knocked-over-during-live-cross/ZIXMCTOPHO2HMMJOZXLV74SNJM/

Not having been a fan of the zombie apocalypse movie genre thus not having a deep understanding of the science behind zombieism, next time Shaun Hendy is interviewed on TV, are there any signs we should be looking for?  Did he get bitten?  Is that how it works?  Is this normal Auckland?  Should we make L4 permanent?

Please, I know this was a lighthanded comment but in Auckland, closely following the rules and isolation, it is very hard watching the rest of NZ head for relative freedom.

There was a letter either on here or gpforums where someone had written to a MP (Wayne Mapp??) under the OIA requesting the Govt's response to a zombie apocalypse, he declined to answer on the basis that it wouldn't happen, I wonder if that plan has changed.... :)

Im a multi gen house baby, back when a house in remuera cost us $25k ;-p

Actually we had 4 gens in the house at one stage but 5 people.

Anyway, to the point, yes it is a reality and has been for a long time, one of the older blokes in the family use to drive me to my south auck boxing gym when I was young. All my friends came from 10 to a house type situation, but that was more by choice I think, rather than desperation in the current climate. 27 is indeed extreme.

I don't think Covid would be the first virus/disease to sweep through a household, whether its 5 or 27, but it does make me wonder why there is no rhyme or reason as to who catches it in the house?

I hear ya. But think of it this way, many of them have to go into work ;-p

Don't let Covid fatigue beat you, I think we nearly there (I think even poppa smurf would be thnking so)?

Although Im hearing comments about wages being reduced due to people being able to work from home. Has anybody else heard of similar?

There is also a tradition in European cultures where the bride will go and live with the husband in husbands parents house till they can afford to buy their own and then the cycle is repeated with the next generation.

What occurred in the sixties, and still does, with migrant Europeans in Australian, was that usually two, sometimes three, different families would share the same house and all pay the mortgage till it is very quickly paid off. They sell and split the proceeds and buy separately. This is a very quick way to get on the property ladder.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Remember, you're heading for relative freedom too. You're just a bit behind the rest of us is all. Kia kaha.

Meanwhile a large percentage of local community here, has for the last couple of hours been screaming 'why should we, there is none in the south island. Be level 1 already and get on with it' and asking why people are supporting that there is still a requirement.

Kiwis. Suck.

The SI was busy screaming "Why aren't we in level 2, it's not here!" when everywhere was Level 4 and Level 3. Now we're Level 2 they're busy whinging "Why aren't we at level 2". Typical whingers.

(The reason the SI is at level 2 like the rest of us is that L2 will help slow the spread if someone that's +ve from the NI travels there. Otherwise it'd explode and the SI would find itself in Level 4 for a long time)

I tried to level head reason with them with those. But still couldn't. So abandoned.

Then there was 'why is Wellington level 2 too, magically no cases'. Like it was a conspiracy

Apparently asking these twits to prove the claim there is no cases thus no risk. Isn't allowed.

One of them has since come back with the link to the exemption form to print/save

That's how you know it's an anti-vaxxer/conspiracy theorist.

The Wellington and South Islanders finding restrictions unnecessary.
Not sure if there is somewhere to easily see the numbers crossing Auckland borders every day. Its not inconsequential.

This is the thing that rest of NZ and South Islanders should be aware of.
South Islanders may say , well that's only Mercer, a North Island problem.
There is free interchange between South and North Islands outside Auckland. Many might be coming to a ski field near you too.

Some truckers, trades and essential workers were most unhappy with testing and monitoring at the boarder of Auckland,
and a bit of vaccine reluctance perhaps.
Apparently some of the Tauranga Port associated reluctance were a not insubstantial number of truckers saying they don't need to.
