Ardern doesn't sound so confident / assured as she has been before.

Makes me feel she didn't want Auckland to go to level 3 next week, but her colleagues are pushing her to do so.

I am surprised they aren't bringing in tougher restrictions, as a  Delta level 4 . In some countries they even  had restrictions on the amount of time people could leave their house for for exercise etc. If everyone was following the rules and were staying at home and scanning etc, I can't see how it can be still spreading two incubation cycles in.  IMO they need to get tougher.

My concern is that some of these cases have been detected via  surveillance testing, so these people likely wouldn't have been at POIs or close contacts.

it is the thousands of essential workers who are still moving about who are still spreading it .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

It was already said on one of the articles this morning by one of the contacts the media go for for comment.

Jackson said most mystery cases weren't really mysteries - people just couldn't remember where they had gone the day before. But one of the benefits of lockdown was that people generally knew where they had been.

"When you leave the house you've gotta act like you've got Covid and everyone around you has got Covid. Most Aucklanders aren't."

Hows that? You aren't meant to be going far. And when you do, it's to an essential location where you rightly have to log your movements.

If that's the case. I'm not sure memory is the issue here..

Or is all the 'other' locations just forgetting to print QR codes ;)

As with another area of legislation that won't be mentioned, I can't help feeling that instead of bringing in tougher restrictions, it would be better to enforce the current ones properly.  I know that gangs and some other areas of the community are traditionally largely exempt from law enforcement, but maybe COVID is a case where the same laws should apply to all.  That way, you don't further annoy the law-abiding people while allowing the actual problem cause to go unchecked.

Just a suggestion.

Apparently this lockdown there are more essential workers working, than in the lockdown last year. IMO they may need to restrict what an essential worker is. But a lot of people need to keep working. IMO they need to give out helicopter payments. People need to stay at home to stop it spreading around the community. Vaccination apparently doesn't have that much of an effect on reducing the R value. The R value is currently under 1 which it needs to be for it to die out.

Apparently some people have been holding parties and get togethers during the level 4 lockdowns. Apparently some of these have been prosecuted. But my concern is that it is spreading in high intensive housing developments such as apartment buildings, where the air conditioning maybe poor.

(Paraphrased from today's 4 pm Q&A:)

Reporter (Jane): "How many cases have been picked up from surveillance testing to date?"

Adern: "Surveillance testing hasn't produced any health care workers and no essential workers..."

Bloomfield: "... none of the community general testing, surveillance testing, has... identified specific cases..."

KiwiBornBloke,
So is she waiting to get Sinovac, that's a deactivated one, Chinese embassy may be very keen to help there, no need to wait ?

But I would go with our well proven Pfizer as you did.
Deactivated virus is tricky to get right, and have their own problems, Sinovac is better than nothing , but...
Well you could go further back to scraping puss out of sores but Covid is not that type of virus.

When you have vaccines that have been given to Billions of people and subject to intense oversight.
The 10's thousands in the trials are well over a year down the track.

With children as teachers all know you have a fast track for virus spread to adults close to them.

Delay is a favorite message that Antivax groups push as well, so watch who you might be getting this message from.
It allows them to capture people on the edge and draw them in maybe that delay can be grown into indefinite.
They count every delay as a win, sick puppies.

All the best, I'm working with a reluctant family member that's in a vulnerable age group its not fun.

KiwiBornBloke: and a wife who isn’t antivacc but also WON’T vaccinate by her own choice 🤦🏼‍♂️

Can you please explain to me how that inconsistency exists. Seems very Schrodinger to me.

@Fred99:

KiwiBornBloke: but things like this video make her hesitant this time:

So she won't get vaccinated as she believes a discredited mad doctor who posts antivax lies on social media.

Seems like a typical antivaxxer to me.

User was banned because posted a link to a covid misinformation video. Yes, antivax with the "I am vaccinated but..." crap.

You make this all sound very black and white where for many people it isn't. Labelling the vaccine hesitant as anti vax is daft and counter productive.

That user posted a link to a misinformation video - see my previous comment.

while i agree that doing the same thing week after week and expecting a different result is like magic, i don't know if AKL will tolerate more restrictions. maybe they will.

but if you really want to find cases maybe test everyone.

get groups of 10 streets to spit into a bucket. test the bucket. 99% of the buckets will test negative

the 1% of the buckets that test positive you hunt down the case.

but yeah it's easy to restart a video game and try a new strategy, not easy on the go.

anyway i was just kidding, but it's time to generate new ideas.

Not really. Worst case another week allows another 350k+ vaccinations. Best case NZ gets out of jail.

It's not viable long term but lockdown is the only viable option with NZ levels of vaccination. You're either locking to to eliminate or locking down to suppress numbers. Either way you're locking down.

If their names are all over media, social and news then the suppression order wont really have any teeth as everyone will know anyway.

The fine wont bother them, they own a holiday home in Wanaka, the bad publicity for them and anyone who helped them is the best punishment, accountability for your actions.

Like every other actor and sportsperson who does something stupid, "I made a terrible mistake but I will learn from it" Easy out as usual.

Agree. Delta is tougher, off course, but if you get to less than 20 cases and hardly any infectious in the community thats huge.
