Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is talking to The AM Show

She said the Government has no intention of continuing to use lockdowns in the long term.

We need to use vaccines so we don't have to use lockdowns in the future, she said.

This may be a clue to the Level 3 in 7 days. What is the full and one dose stats for AKL about now?

I dunno but people aren't listening to what words are coming out of her mouth because facebook is full of "yay one more week! only one more week!" when all she's done is basically said the same thing she's said all along - we want to lower the level but we won't know til we have all the supporting info to do it

I don't see that as a clue to next week. It's a clue to what they want to happen at Christmas. And it's not particularly enlightening. The whole point of mass vaccination is to avoid lockdowns.

All bookings for first jabs should be cancelled, set up large scale sites dotted around the city with drive through access and get it done. Going hard and early should be the mantra for vaccinations, not this MIQ like booking disaster.

Our first jab was booked across the other side of the city (Chch) later this month, my daughter got a call about booking a new spot near her work and we were able to cancel existing booking and get a new one within 2 days. If it wasn't for her working for a supermarket and getting priority call, we would never have known new spots were available 3 weeks before our other booking.

I view the PM's briefings and extension of lockdown in the same vein as a wife getting her husband to do chores - the list a mile long, but if they only give out a few at a time, it won't seem so bad (start with this, now this, now this, now this.........) only time its lockdowns. The initial lockdown of 3 days was NEVER going to be 3 days, she knew it, but said we need to lock down and "wait and see", then another 4 days, then another and so on. Her experts are very good mouth pieces at prepping the country for bad news, Michael Baker et al urging caution and "more time" gives her license to ignore pretty much any other view point.

Perhaps all politicians need to go down to the wage subsidy level for the entirety of level 3 & 4 to at least live with some of the pain they are causing

Well yeah - in context of that discussion, but otherwise nope, the whole point is to avoid widespread death and sickness, vaccination and lockdowns tools in the kit.

Delta is causing it. Or we could go the ScoMo/Boris way and get the economy back on track...

That's kind of what is happening. Minus the cancelling. They keep pushing the fact, but still not many are listening. Or too elderly/no internet and need the personal assistance as they have arranged over the phone and don't want to hassle again

There are at least 2 stations capable of ~3000 a day doing 400-500 or barely scraping the quad figures at times

And then there are those who are using it, and not cancelling or opening their slot up to allow MoH to reach out to people personally with the likely option.

GPs were on news last night, Doing ~400 at their setup clinics at peak are down to ~140 a day.

Both of which requests to change, have been asked for in the last few dailies.

Maybe the constant carping critics of politicians should quit trying so hard to put the worst possible interpretation on every decision that is made. These are people for the most part working very hard to come up with the best solutions they can in very difficult circumstances. Holidays and free weekends are probably a distant memory. The PM's and DG's near-daily standups take a lot of preparation time and they both also have a lot of other things to attend to at the same time. Presenting Jacinda Ardern as a conniving housewife tricking a reluctant husband into doing chores is misogynist, disrespectful and disgraceful. She is doing a damned hard job and she is doing it damned well.

This just doesn't reconcile with this other statements about tolerating no deaths etc long term. Even with a tightly closed border it got in (and sounds like the border isn't opening until probably 2023 now). Maybe I'm just being cynical, but this is either BS to not freak out the public (and cross your fingers there isn't another outbreak), or willful ignorance to the reality of Delta.

Even if 100% of your population is vaccinated, if cases get in they can (and do) still spread. It would be extremely hard to stop transmission without a lockdown because of the virulence of Delta.

To maintain an elimination strategy long term (as the PM has committed to) will require lockdowns and a tightly closed border regardless of vaccination rates.

Unless we want to close off to the world, and have MiQ for life, Delta will arrive, and spread, and we will be able to live with it like any other diseases by being vaccinated.

Elimination is only buying the country time to get vaccinated.

But the PM has said, even this week, the goal is elimination long term - regardless of vaccination levels.

She has said she will tolerate no deaths - not just until everyone is vaccinated, but long term.

The only way to achieve that is to do what you described, plus have lockdowns if/when it breaks through MIQ again.

No, I have to disagree with you. How do you have plans to open the borders without Delta and Mu etc coming in?

Yes, elimination for now but I don't think she said it's long term.

Update: If elimination is long term then we can become a hermit nation.

Really helpful comments in the middle of an outbreak

"Immunologist Graham Le Gros, director of the Malaghan Institute, said New Zealand couldn't survive without Auckland working and that was concerning. Speaking to the AM Show, he said Auckland needed to be vaccinated now by the end of the week.

"We really need to get you guys vaccinated 100 per cent."

He said the virus had gone underground and "we are chasing our tails now".
The Delta virus could hide in domestic animals and at some point, New Zealand needed to learn to deal with it."

Pretty sure there have not been any reported cases of people catching COVID from domestic animals.....

and if its true then we had better start a mass culling programme.... ,,,,here fluffy fluffy

Agree. They say there is an opening up plan, and the emphasis on vaccines. Get vaccinated and check the lay of the land then

Hermit nation isn't quite correct. We can do everything internationally, except travel in and out, so trade is covered, so not hermit

I'm not sure Death is terribly concerned about what she will or won't tolerate.

( I'M NOT. AT ALL. IT'S NOT RELEVANT. said Death. SQUEAK. added Death of Rats, helpfully.)
