teacher - not sure the theme there. to protect kids giving to their grannies?

For primary school teachers (like myself!) I think the mandate makes sense given we are working with up to 100+ kids at any given time who have no vaccination to COVID-19. Remember many newer schools have 'modern' classrooms with 100+ kids all moving around so an outbreak among kids in a 'modern learning environment' could easily become a massive super-cluster.

Not sure why it's been extended to high school teachers as well but possibly just keeping the net wider makes it easier to police this, as well as acknowledging there will be some teachers and other eduction staff who work at multiple schools so might as well make sure they're all vaccinated.

I'm already double-vaccinated myself so no worries there.

Secondary teachers might be exposed (in a classroom) with up to 150 odd people a day in a room with often poor circulation for possibly over an hour at a time.

I have a number of students that I know won't be getting vaccinated (decile 10+)

Well the people caps have been addressed after much enquiring from the sector it seems. Stadium and or event venue are lumped into clearer descriptor. Where 1m applies but no limit as there is tracing capabilities down to each person.

So speedway etc will be back on no doubt (kept separation.. yeah right)

However marathon.. considered uncontrolled. And 100 limit applies.

Batman:

police and supermarket workers - no need to protect - police don't come in contact with sick normally, supermarket workers and normally have close contact with people, no more than waiter.

Police don't come into contact with sick??? They deal with hundreds of randoms in the highest risk areas on a daily basis - they are high risk. In Auckland waiters are not allowed right now so comparing them to supermarket workers doesn't make sense.

Yeah I think I'll believe Auckland uni epidemiologist Rod Jackson who today said immediately after the report both those groups should've been included.

it's just the theme i see from this mandate.

which is to protect the vulnerable and not to protect self.

you can ask the govt for clarification for why police and supermarket staff do not affect the vulnerable.

Set mine up this morning. All it does it link your federal gov digital vaccine certificate to the state app, but it's pretty seamless.

These continual tweaks and changes to the guidelines must be incredibly frustrating for event organisers when there is no actual change in policy being announced by the government.

On Friday Sport NZ published their new guidelines which were prepared in conjunction with official advice  https://sportnz.org.nz/media/4521/play-active-recreation-and-sport-at-level-2-211008-version-2.pdf   and this is what allowed a lot of events over the weekend to start up again.

On Friday you even had events like Parkrun send out official comms saying that they were starting back this Sat 16th after seeking clarification of the rules. The subsequent changes to the Covid website since then, despite no change to govt policy, mean many events that took place over the weekend would have been illegal, and that events like Parkrun which has more than 100 people at most of their locations seemingly aren't now possible as they'd be considered an uncontrolled event.

I suddenly wonder if the local MTB club realises. They've been holding events on local public courses. Where you can be out on your bike, or walk up and watch. Sure they may not get 100 people. But it is on paper uncontrolled as you say (and even a road race is given as an example)

I'm struggling to understand why spectators at a stadium are treated differently to participants in a marathon.

At a stadium you have bottlenecks as people are entering and leaving the venue, meaning that people will briefly come into close proximity with others that they don't know.

At a marathon you have a bottleneck at the start and finish lines. Again, this results in a short breach of the distancing rules.

In terms of risk, what's the difference between these two scenarios?

100% speculation on my behalf - at the stadium everyone should be wearing a mask, so no different between that and all the people walking through the railway station each morning.
At a marathon, especially at the finish line, competitors aren't wearing masks and are much more likely to be huffing and puffing and blowing germs around?

At the current rate of progress in the UK, the entire population will have had C-19 in just over 5 years.

In the same time span a population equivalent to double the population of Dunedin will have died from the virus.

That's what happens when you stop trying to control it.

Group of 30 people huddled on a corner. No QR scanning. No clear idea on who else is around you. One of them coughs on the rest. How do you find the others...

Vs

30 people sitting on seats at a stadium who have both tickets, and QR/signin at the door as a method of narrowing position.
