How will the same grandchildren feel in 20 years time when they are paying the economic, health and social consequences of our strategy?

They already will be and as lockdown for 5 years wont happen anywhere on Earth, its a moot point. Like everywhere else we will live with it, we just want to be better prepared than others, that doesn't mean 5 years.

Technofreak:

Perhaps they have shared their data, the article doesn't say that. The app only tells/asks you to share your data if you test positive.

Is there a misunderstanding on how the app data is used? Do people really understand that without them deliberately sharing their data the contact tracers have no idea where they have been. It really is an electronic diary that is stored solely on our device. I don't recall seeing any good publicity/advertising that clearly explains how the app works. Do we need better education on how the app works? I know everyone on Geekzone will be up with the play but I'm not so sure about the less technically interested in our population.

People only understand 1 sentence long descriptions on facebook these days. Anything else is a govt conspiracy or lie. So it's beyond them understanding even if it has been around for some time:

The person has to have scanned themselves. And agree to share it (privacy). Presumably it is then quantified if the need is to tell everyone en-mass (definate notation of close contacts based on interview), or release it as a LoI only for self-check it would seem.

Thats not right, what I bolded, self explanatory

So tell me when Auckland's L3 ends then.

I know it's a dumb question but living week to week with no end in sight is a massive ask, yet that's what Aucklanders are being asked to do - for the good of everyone else, I might add.

Possibly more pertinent to NZ's situation is that if we hadn't locked down when we did in March last year, the economic cost would have been much greater - and thousands of people would have died.

We're in the exit stage from an elimination strategy now.

In 20 years time then who knows?  Greatest period of economic growth and thus opportunity for young people last century was in the years after WWII.

No idea but its not indefinite, or 5 years as was also posted. We are getting vaccination up, and its not helped by a noticeable number of non compliers, you could ask them. Remember, all of us have had lockdowns and they will spread everywhere in time

We could have "lived with it" a number of weeks ago I guess, as has been offered by other Kiwi's. Spread like wildfire, etc. We dont wnat that we also dont wnat 5 years, we want vaccination up, but we cannot mandate that for the masses

If Covid is a problem in NZ, do you want to make it three times worse?

Easy. Remove the Auckland borders.

What I CAN NOT understand and reason with, is WHY have the government NOT ring fenced the Sth Island ❗️

Mandatory negative tests and mandatory double jabbed for everyone going south by any means and route, including incoming from overseas anywhere ❗️

and let them get back to level 1.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

The lockdowns here have been trivial compared to many other countries.

Its really easy. Give some rules, then everyone follows them, after 14 days , sorted but make it 21 to be sure

Or what has happened this time

I guess that would be relevant if I lived in one of those countries?

That video is good for a quick over view but lacking important details in my opinion.  It doesn't really explain that the contract tracing system relies on people sharing their data manually when the needs arises. Use of the app doesn't automate any tracking process. I think a lot of people think that by using the app that the contact tracers will come looking for them when they have been exposed.

No - they'd be very relevant to anybody with more than a passing interest in how well we've been able to manage Covid in NZ.

Also - if you're looking overseas, most contagious diseases spread fastest and hardest in dense populations / larger cities.

I don't think anyone sane is suggesting we just strip away the borders and move to an effective level 2 for everyone.

But given that Auckland will soon be ahead of the national average for vaccines (if it isn't already) then it becomes a question of whether we need to be letting people who have been double-vaccinated be able to start getting back to some degree of normal - at least a sustainable version of normal, anyway.

Level 3 as it stands is not sustainable, just like full-bore level 2 isn't sustainable either.
