Unsure why, its not new news. It's free. But I'd like that to be covered off.

Same same, nobody left behind. We know who and where, its time for proactivity. Surely in an extremely multi cultural society we can find ways to bridge the void....

New Press release on Super Saturday:

https://www.health.govt.nz/news-media/media-releases/super-saturday-covid-19-vaccination-data-update

But it was the previously available data was most useful. 39,025 first doses. Prior Saturday was about 18k doses, so this was a major win, and well worth the effort in my mind. And a decent chunk of those first doses when to Maori and pacific.

I think there is a lot to be said for just trying a different approach. The media played up an example where a person heard music at the Fordlands Community Centre vaccination hub, so entered simply to see what was going on, ended up getting vaccinated on the spot, then going home to get her son so he could be as well.

Just been comparing some vaccination numbers.

NZ numbers are 12+ years old, Aust numbers are 16+. (Gives a small advantage to the Aust numbers)

1st dose / 2 doses

As at 11:58pm 16/10/2021

NZ: 85% / 65%

Auckland: 89% / 71%

As at 15/10/2021

Aust: 84.4% / 67.2%

WA: 72.8% / 55.2%

NT: 70.3% / 58.8%

SA: 75.6% / 58.1%

VIC: 88% / 65%

QLD: 72.1% / 56.2%

NSW: 91.9% / 79.8%

ACT: >95% / 78.8%

TAS: 83.0% / 68.1%

We have come a long way in a short time with vaccination numbers. I think we are doing great given we haven't broke out the stick yet (outside of Border, Health & Education workers).

There's a bit more to it than that; from a previous article:

Tamihere is chief executive of the Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency (WOCA), an umbrella group for Maori health providers, including his own West Auckland-based Waipareira Trust.

I believe they were the ones behind the successful Trusts Stadium drive through vaxx centre.

Has anybody seen any data online that shows any additional details of MIQ cases? I'm really curious over the past 2 months as an example how many MIQ cases were detected beyond the day 0/1 or day 3 tests. This is shown in the daily press releases but doesn't seem to be shown in any other easy to access location.

It's pretty clear now the business case for MIQ is slowly beginning to fade when we now have 363 cases this week of CT this week and 9 in MIQ with every one of those cases being pickup up during day 0/1 or day 3 testing. Looking back in recent weeks with the exception of a few close contacts who have become infectious later in their stay, virtually everybody is testing positive on day 0/1 or day 3. We're not collection vaccination status of arrivals so don't have a way to know what percentage of those who are testing positive are fully vaccinated, but you would have to assume the mast majority of people these days would be.

I tend to agree. I think an end to 14 days MIQ for the masses is approaching one day at a time (it's coming like it or not). You would have to imagine it would be a phased approach backed up by data gathered beforehand and along the way, and the current state of Covid in NZ at the time. We'll see how the business quarantine at home trial works out this side of Christmas.

I would expect the howls of protest will be heard from far and wide. Some people can't understand why we are not already building purpose built MIQ facilities far away from Auckland.

Leaving MI today so knowing my luck, expect an announcement tomorrow.

I doubt it. They are mostly driven by social media.

Deplatforming them from MSM would just feed their cause.

"Deplatforming" may be the wrong term.  Tamaki seeks attention.  News media putting him on the front page all the time gives him the attention he craves.

From the Herald:

And director general of health Ashley Bloomfield has warned that Covid cases will continue to rise and that Auckland's border will need to stay in place until the rest of the country's vaccination rates also climb.

This seems like a bit a dud deal tbh. Auckland has to be locked down because it has Covid but restrictions are being relaxed which means it spreads easier.

At the same time, the rest of the country's lower vaccination rates mean Aucklanders can't leave Auckland.

To put it another way, Auckland's high infection rates mean Aucklanders can't leave Auckland.

Life wasn't meant to be fair, it is what it is - at the moment quite a reasonable restriction to protect the 2/3 of people in NZ who don't live in that region.

He specifically says the lack of vaccination in other regions is the issue.

"Life wasn't meant to be fair" - funny how that doesn't extend to letting the vaccinated get on with their lives, isn't it? Isn't it funny how morality is convenient like that.

It's not like the the rest of NZ is not getting vaccinated though is it.
There is a clear push for find an vaccinate the unvaccinated (eg 20,000 1st does for Maori on Saturday).

Yes it sucks for Auckland to have a boundary, but  it is what it is.
To be blunt about it how many people do you want to die?

Even in Auckland the rates are still to low for Maori.
Comparison data here

On the bright side the level 3 phase 2 can't be to far away. I wonder if they will drop hints in this afternoons presser.
It may be they are waiting for the vaccination certificate & 80% 2 dose to open up retail which puts it maybe 2-3 weeks away?

Do you not understand the reason why all restrictions can't be immediately lifted?

Seems selfish - "pull the ladder up jack - I'm aboard".

No - you pull your head in, do what's being asked for perfectly reasonable reasons, and stop crying like a baby about how hard things are for you.  There's a million and a half other people in Auckland, most of whom I expect are rather more keen than you to save lives.

I liken the situation to a fields of long dry grass in mid-summer. Eventually something is going to ignite the grass and the ensuing fire is going to rip across the field until it burns itself out. The embers are already smouldering in the Auckland ‘field’.

The vaccine is in effect the farmer furiously mowing and collecting the dry grass to prevent the fire’s spread, hoping green shoots will be resistant to damage. And frantically stamping on the embers is doing little.

Luckily there is a fire break to the next field of long grass. But it is dry also and for that which remains un-mown, the fire is coming eventually. But for now we need the firebreak to remain.

Don’t be the long grass……..

But in the “life wasn’t meant to be fair” realm, is it justified for the FIBI (the Feckless, Indolent, Belligerent and Ill-informed) to hold the rest of us to ransom? Remember the good old school days when the teacher held everybody back because of the misbehaviour of one student? Did their classmates think “Poor xxxx, I don’t mind being inconvenienced because you’re a FIBI. We’re all in this together.” I don’t think so, although my school days were in less ‘enlightened’ times.
Singling out an already disadvantaged group as the reason for things being being held up may sound like empathy from the authorities, but will cause antipathy from large sections of the community. I cringe every time I hear about “the most vulnerable” because that used to be the elderly and medically compromised, but they were prioritised. My response now is, particularly in Auckland, “Are the most vulnerable also the ones that are lining up for food parcels? The ones that were working 3 jobs just to make ends meet? The ones whose jobs have disappeared under lockdown, but their bills haven’t.”

We are definitely a team of 2 million (incl Northland and Waikato, although I hope that they can escape today) and a team of 3 million. I challenge the ‘experts’ in the 3 million to either come to Auckland and make your proclamations from here, or stay where you are but don’t leave your house and survive on the wage subsidy.

Edit: A couple of posts while I was composing (as always happens).

Don’t mistake compliance with endorsement.
