scuwp: Anyone tried ceiling fans..was thinking of installing them in the bedrooms. They seem fairly cheap, and they are quiet, not like the portable fans. Seems simple enough to install as well, with a sparky doing the final connections.

Ceiling fans are more designed to circulate air around the room, rather then cooling by blowing air across a surface. Dyson fans are good if you want a quiet fan for cooling, as they are very quiet on the lower settings, and also remote controlled.

We have had that "solution" for 6 months.... Works brilliantly even when its 44 outside!

michaelmurfy: I normally go to bed at around 1am when it is cooler in summers - in the meantime a fan blows on my partners side of the bed because, females.

We have the opposite arrangement. I sleep on the side near the window because my wife can't stand having a breeze, and I can't stand not having one. Because, females.

wasabi2k: have a baby on 3-4 hour sleep schedule.

Works a treat - you are always tired so no prob falling asleep.

Possibly expensive long term and not really a "right now" solution.

Works for me too. If one doesn't help, have another, and another...... or even just the art of making another does it.....

A cold shower until your body temperature drops down is good too. Plenty of sunshine in the morning (outdoor exercise) lets you soak up Vitamin D (which is really a hormone) this in turn gets your melatonin working at night so you sleep.

Yeah aircon is worth it, even a cheapie will be good.

Have a Warehouse $10 fan from a couple of years ago pushed on the highest setting all night long, pointed right at me.
If I get too cold, snuggle up in the duvet. It's so good and I don't know how I ever did without this in the past.

How about an evaporative cooler? Not used one myself but seem like a good idea, although the moisture may be an issue for some.

Evaporative coolers are pointless in humid heat. They work great in deserts like australia and the same chains that sell them there sell them here because NZ is part of aussie to them right?

I have one, you can have it. Seriously the wife want's it gone, as mentioned above they are a joke in humid conditions.

We got aircon in the lounge (heavenly on 18 degrees), in the bedroom there's a fan. I'd like to install ceiling fans one day.

Definitely! One for the living area, the other for the hallway near the bedrooms.

For the hard up, a stand-alone extraction fan in the bathroom on all night keeps the trapped heat out and draws some fresh air in under the doors.

That's a pretty big outdoor unit, bet it works well.

I use an air conditioner as well. Doors and windows open until 9pm, then close 'em up and turn on the air con until we go to bed. It's not so hot down here, plus the sleeping area of our house is away from where the sun sets. My kitchen gets up to 35 degrees regularly, sometimes 40.

We have heat pumps all over the house - 4 of them - and one in our bedroom was a must. All summer long it runs around 12 hours a night: bliss.

As a bonus in winter, if you have an ensuite and do not want to open windows because it is cold, or the RH is too high to dry effectively, leaving the a/c on for a few hours when everyone is done with showers etc gets rid of all the condensation...!
