Bung: It is not just young people. We used to have a neighbour whose adult daughter got 2 years for "possession for supply". From her daughter she learnt that meth users can be found right through all levels of society. If nothing else the effect is that it sucks money into a black hole.

Yep. That single example is also probably at least $250,000 cost to the economy for the justice / prison system, and I guess an incalculably high cost for what she inflicted on her own life - even if she's lucky enough to have been rehabilitated long term.

That's what I hear through the grapevine in Chch too.

That situation is a very serious risk to young people in particular. I know plenty of more mature-aged "stoners" who'd never dream of using meth if they ran out of dope. Not so young risk-takers who just want to get high.

According to my son who worked on large building sites in the CBD, there was a lot of meth used by tradies, as they had random drug testing on all sites, meth clears your system fast so you test clean the next day, but you lose your job if you smoked weed a week ago. They'd always get advance warning of random tests - the system was full of deliberate holes, as the contractors did not want to lose workers even if they were drug users.

We are asking for disaster with current NZ drug enforcement laws, and we're going to get it. As I understand it, use levels as ascertained by analysis of metabolites of common narcotic drugs in municipal sewage indicate that NZ has a problem already, but it could get much much worse - as it has in parts of Australia.

I was on a travel forum a while back and I was talking to an american gentleman who had just travelled NZ and he said he thought NZ had a huge meth problem, he is a medicinal cannibus user and he said for the life of him he struggled to get any but everyone knew where to get meth from.

the destruction that drug does to community's and families is something you need to see to believe, coming from South Auckland (reside in chch now) I would say 8 in 10 people I knew tried it, 7 in 10 people still use it and 5 in 10 have completely had their lives destroyed by it and 3 in 10 deal it for gangs, some old school friends some extended family. It is really really widespread and I'm surprised the government hasn't addressed the real realities of this drug its an epidemic.

I refuse to go back in the neighbourhood if my family travel with me back to Auckland to visit we will stay with my wife's family.

I have seen some terrible things caused by this drug, it is one of the worst.

Yep, been in all levels of society for a long time. Three good examples that immediately spring to mind for me are Millie Elder-Holmes, daughter of broadcaster the late Sir Paul Holmes; Darren McDonald, former news anchor; and Keith Jefferies, criminal defence lawyer [ironically, a very apt description].

Easy. The price goes up and the quality goes down.

This (I suspect). And the concern for everyone (user or not) is the second part of that. It'll get cut with cheaper and nastier chemicals that will have bigger unknown side effects.

Hopefully the former effect, price increases, will encourage some users to seek help and get off the drug!

No, thats too hard lol they will just lace it with sugar or salt, suger mostly as it burns like meth for the first few seconds.

Cooks/labs aren't nearly as prevalent as they used to be given the (relative) lack of access to psuedoephedrine now and the comparative less risk involved from importation.

Couple that with transnational crime groups noting our high prices and their ability to supply the market and we have a lot of it.

Australia has a huge problem, not only with meth but with cocaine and MDMA also.

You've got to laugh at their optimism that this is half a years supply.. More like a few weeks..This country is absolutely awash in drugs despite all their efforts, the war on drugs simply just doesn't work.

Yup. I'm in my 60s, have seen plenty of illicit drug (ab)use harm people over the years. Alcohol is another of the worst.

I witnessed one of the well known high profile kiwi users mentioned above high on meth - reacting to something that "annoyed" them. Was absolutely unbelievable, frightening, sad and pathetic.

In fact, the reason I asked, was to start a discussion, which is exactly what happened. I am perfectly capable of using the resources available if I just want information. The medical references don't really cover big issues - getting users in to some rehab programme in the first place, and despite stating that meth is (many times) "more addictive" than other drugs, no attempt seems to have been made to explain why that might be. I'm pretty sure that physical withdrawal symptoms from meth addiction are no worse and probably milder than for opiate addiction - and the physical harm from addiction is even worse (and permanent).

Yup there will be another lot coming right along behind the one they found , If you want it you will get it by what ever means necessary. Its not like smokes where its oh the price is to high now time to ring quite line and stop.

Sadly I would say they may get 1% of what is coming through, Maybe less I don't know the reported figure actually is.

I would say you would have to put them on methadone or something, if you cut everybody off completely I would say all hell would break loose. Think of the billions going back into the economy though that was not being spent of meth.
