Batman: I'd suggest that eating only red meat and fat and abstaining from fruits plants vege etc is more likely to kill someone in the long run than making them live longer. At least you won't die of diabetes if the blogs are correct.

But each to their own!

A keto diet is not abstaining from fruit plant and vegetables. You can still consume plenty of those, you just need to be selective about which ones and watch your carb intake. A VERY general rule of thumb: "If it grows above the ground - good. If it grows below the ground - bad.

I hadn't actually made this post to be an US VS THEM thing, just wanted to chat with others who were like minded.

So guys, if keto/carnivore isn't your cup of tea, why do you feel the need to poo poo it? We are allowed to do this as much as you're allowed to believe what you want to believe.

Rhys, do you have anything to support these points that aren't heavily biased?

I discovered Keto about a year ago and it bought home to me how carbs just make me pile on weight.  I'm older (58) and something has changed in my metabolism over the last year or two.  I lost about 6kg's and then piled them back on because I'm lazy, don't cook and couldn't maintain the low carb, high fat diet, bacon and eggs get tiring after a while.

Have recently discovered the pre-prepared Keto meals from Muscle fuel and am trying those.  I'll never be strict keto but think I can maintain a lower carb, higher fat diet if I'm careful and I don't have to cook or think about ti too much.  My girlfriend is also doing the same thing so that helps a lot. The Muscle Fuel meals are yum and they definitely work in reducing the hunger and are not healthy meals labelled as Keto, they are genuinely low in carbs and high in the right type of fats.

For me, it works and the slow reduction in belly fat is a very good thing.

Belly fat = visceral fat, and that's the worst kind to have; so that is fantastic man! How is your girlfriend finding it? :)

Yep, belly fat = mucho bad.  My partner has done it before and it worked really well for her but like me she doesn't cook (much) so hopefully the pre-prepared meals will keep us in line (ish).  Also stock the house with better snacks like nuts, Atkins chocolate bars etc so when snacking at least it's better stuff.

I do love my chippies though 😬

Many of these diets will work, that's not really in dispute. The problem is finding one that is realistic for your lifestyle, and one that is maintainable.

Personally, I've found that the whole low carb thing works the best for me, as well as trying for a 16:8 intermittent fasting thing. Before doing this, I found I often forgot to have breakfast, and so now I slightly gamify it, trying to make it through to 2-3 in the afternoon.

Both of these measures are not that demanding, and thus are easy enough to stick to without much effort. Going VERY low carb was hard work - there were times I would have clubbed a puppy for a piece of dry bread... 😅

@Gurezaemon low carb naturally leads into intermittent fasting for most people I find, you're switching from being glucose burning to fat burning so can last longer between meals. You're also more in touch with your hunger signals so can tell the difference between real hunger versus boredom/emotional/I'm doing this social thing so must eat, eating.

I love that aspect of it but I discovered early on that the key word is intermittent, especially for women. I pushed it to 5 days on two occasions, and whew did that do bad things for me. Never again. 16:8, to a max of 72 is great for weight loss and most inflammatory issues, but deep ketosis and autophagy, induced by longer fasts is only necessary if you're REALLY ill and never do it without supervision.

I also find that over time our taste buds change. The things we used to crave, we don't want as much anymore. I've recently cut dairy completely and this was super hard for me to do because I love my morning cuppa tea with a dollop of milk and I good god do I love cheese. But after 3 weeks, eh, I think I have nostalgia cravings more than anything else. Black tea tastes good! ;)

@rp1790 I'm so happy for you both! Yea there are things you miss but it's worth persevering! The way I look at it, I had PLENTY of those things and that's what got me into the situation I am in now, and now I have to fix it.

Interesting thread. I don't know much about keto but if its low carb I'm essentially doing that now. I cut out gluten around 5-6 months ago and the results have been amazing. I've lost approx. 7 kg (80 currently )and am feeling the best in years. I'm not doing any exercise, which I should be doing! Eczema on my hands has cleared up, my bowel is moving better, skin clearer, sleeping better. I haven't had things like a pie or McDonalds in that time and don't miss it. Burger Fuel does a good GF bun and Subway's wrap has been a life saver on road trips because it can be hard eating g/f spontaneously. It feels like the habits are formed now and I don't feel like its a diet as such, I just don't eat gluten.

The other thing that has been life changing is hangovers have been dramatically improved. I used to get violently ill after drinking craft beer and now I don't really get them. I'm mostly drinking cider and Carona (technically not g/f, but reduced enough to be ok). It was inflammation really, my insides were really angry.

Anything that makes you feel better is good, I just think extreme diets don't work because they're hard to sustain. I feel like my changes have not been that dramatic and I can still make improvements from here with less alcohol, some exercise etc.

If you're looking at diet from the perspective of long term health or longevity as opposed to just solely weight loss then best people to research are the Okinawans who have the longest life expectancy and the highest number of centenarians. Looking at their diet it is around 90% plant based, little to no red meat, a little bit of fish. I think Keto can be useful for short term weight loss if you've come from a diet of pizza and soda but it riles me a little bit to hear some Keto tell people that you shouldn't be eating those apples and oranges but rather better to eat a packet of butter instead...

Hey @gerg the Okinawan diet is often touted as a mostly carb based diet which isn't actually correct. It's an island infested by wild pigs for one and they are known for their pork. I remember watching this video a few years ago and I think there is a fairly unbiased Nat Geo article from 1969 floating around that does a true account of their diet.

But as I mentioned earlier this post is to chat with others who do keto and carnivore, not for people to come in and tell us we are somehow doing things wrong because they don't believe in it.

I'm a long way from going full keto, but I've lost about 10kg in the last 2 months by lowering my carb, booze and sugar intake and keeping a food diary with an approx. calorie count. Not eliminating anything (still have booze, just less, still have junk food, just less of it and less often) makes it a heck of a lot easier to stick to the plan.

I lived in okinawa for two years and boarded with an elderly couple who ate the traditional okinawan diet of which pork and other meat was a rarity. No cheap tourist video by an overweight American is going to change that..
Its not about judging you for being wrong its about you needing to be careful as there is a lot of misinformation out there with your theory on the okinawan diet a case in point.

Thank you. I'm in perfect health and have been getting better and better for some time thanks to my diet. Cholesterol. Blood pressure. Edema. Migraines. PCOS. Weight. All going in the positive trend. So much so I'm not going to need IVF as my cycles have become regular.

Also not to be rude but I still think the Okinawan diet is not predominantly carb based. I've had friends who've visited. Read accounts of itthat haven't been biases blogs etc. It's a mix of carbs and meat.
