alasta:

I have never really understood the obsession with daily step counts. You're likely to get better results with some variety in your exercise - for example supplementing walking with stair climbing, weight training or swimming.

Fair enough. But for me it’s a simple set target which burns the number of calories I’m aiming for.

Calculations on most watches/trackers are only estimates based on lab formulas and the data entered into them. There estimates can be wildly inaccurate, and inconsistent.

Im 187 cm and started at 123 kg, now 105 kg, My BMR (Base Metabolic Rate) is about 2100kcal (calculated) and im burning anywhere from 2400-3600kcal per day according to my watch (Samsung Watch 4), which is resting kcal and recorded workouts kcal. i have been loosing about 1 kg per week for the past 10 weeks, and prior to that it was 30-500grams per week. I just really stepped up the fitness and been a lot more disciplined in what i have been eating.

My BMR has barely changed according to my watch min 2046kcal max 2196kcal over 12 months even though i have lost 18 kg, and put on quiet a bit of muscle.

Darn, an average of a kg a week for 10 weeks is a huge burn.

Well done on keeping the mental focused, big props on the loss and building muscle.

I found I needed to get new jeans and new belts around the 15kg loss mark, costly on the wallet but worth it.

There are quite a few calculators that will estimate your BMR - base metabolic requirement (energy).  They are accurate enough for weight loss purposes.

If you calculate your BMR for a sedentary lifestyle, eat within it and do some decent exercise daily, weight will fall off.  It also helps if your food isn't easy to digest (e.g. non-starchy vegetables and proteins).

I got myself from >120kg to ~99kg in a few months via this method.  I was eating a few hundred calories less than my BMR, and doing about 400 calories per day, staying in zone 2 cardio (gentle) for the first three months.

Resistance training (esp. core) and intermittent fasting help too.

Hmmmm… have had a few more days where it randomly doesn’t record estimates before I put the watch on in the morning.

No pattern to it that can see.

This is so stupid. It estimates up until midnight, and then just stops. But then other days it works fine. Throws a bunch of the graphs and trends out of whack.

I've only just started paying attention to the data, but it's been recording it for years; and this only seems to have started happening since updating to WatchOS 10.x and iOS 17.x. I might try the Betas.
