Yes there is a higher impact load when running but by and large it seems to have been disproven that running "causes" knee issues.  Any knee issues I have have from running and training for ultra marathons have turned out to be stability issues in the various supporting muscle groups that you can train.  Hip instability for example causing knee pain.  Solution, improve the strength and stability training.

About two years ago I got some significant pain in one of my knees, which is only my second injury in over 20 years of running. It turned out that my shoes had over 1200km of mileage on them - well in excess of the 500 to 800km recommendation. I swapped them out for a new pair of comfort orientated running shoes, the pain abated over a few months, and then I moved back to performance shoes (another new pair, obviously).

I wonder how many people with knee complaints are unaware of how frequently running shoes need to be replaced.

I took a small part in this last year, and I'll admit was really slack at it.... but this year, some workmates and I are determined to hit our minimum goals. So if you can support me (hey, even by PM'ing me to get off GZ and go for a walk), that'd be fantastic, and it all goes to a great cause. If you're in the Whangaparaoa area and want to take part as well, then let me know and we can meet up to encourage one another to keep moving :) Always easier with someone else pushing as well :)

Cheers!

Nice one. I did the Walk 1200km in 12 months challenge on FB last year and am doing something similar this year, except I'm aiming for 2026km. I had a right hip replacement last April so that slowed me down for about a month after which I started picking things up carefully but quite quickly. My left hip is now in much worse state than my right hip was, so I'm waiting for a date for that to get replaced, but I'm not letting that get in my way. I've also set targets of 1000 pressups, 1000 squats, and 2000 sit-ups this month. I'm down in Wellington but am more than happy to PM you every now and again when I'm heading out 👍

Awesome stuff.  I tried running 2024km in 2024.  Even as an ultra runner in training I missed that target, so it's an epic goal.  I didn't even look last year as I was either sick or injured for the last couple of months.

That's really interesting. I'm no spring chicken and I don't go any further than half marathon distance but I managed 2073km in 2024 and 2122km in 2025. 2000km only takes a couple of 15km runs each weekend, plus one or two short runs during the week.

It works if you can keep up the weekly volume consistently.  I had breaks during the year in 2024 for various reasons which put me behind the target and made it too hard to play catch up later.  Just looked at my current stats and two weeks in, I'm already 19.4km behind a goal of 2026km.  Can't go too nuts just yet as I'm still rehabbing last years mess.  Needs an average of 39km per week and my current load is under 30.  I guess we'll see.  It's not a hard goal but a potentially achievable target.

Fair enough. If you've had a setback then it's sensible to ramp up the volume slowly, otherwise you just end up injured again.
