@kobiak but those places would not be manually verifying the age of every single patron. Just the ones that "look" underage.

Very hard to tell with your eyeball who is and isn't vaccinated. So everyone coming through the door will need to be "handled".

That is a lot more overhead.

When was the last time you been to the busy bar in AKL viaduct? :) They check almost everyone and some even SCAN IDs for fake. takes 5 seconds.

Eden park would not be any different, you have to scan your ticket - scan you vaccine pass at the same time. any major sport/community even operate the same way.

Perhaps they could check for 5G emissions coming from cars… anyone still on 3G mustn’t have been vaccinated yet.

Or try sticking a spoon to their arm. If it sticks/magnetic you're vaccinated, if it falls then deny entry.

🤣

Better idea: a verification app that not only checks vaccination status but also flashes red if the user has TikTok installed on their phone.

I hope my relative sees this and just gets the frikken' vaccine.

Yes but don't worry about them it will only make you sick.

Worry about yourself and let them do what they want.

I tried that but the only spoons we have that stick to my arm are made in China. The European brands fell off. Surely some of the conspiracy theories out there can't be true 🤔

Just as well the senior doctor didn't come right out and say it would be a way of backing down without losing face or the hold outs would have to dig their toes in again.

Having had a read of the MOH info on the traffic light system and bearing in mind what we are seeing in other countries, even those with high vax rates, it would seem to me that the whole of the country will always be in at least orange, and most of the time in red from possibly as early as February/March of next year.

The only enforceable border (ie where vax history or -ve tests can be verified) is NI to SI so transmission around each island will be unchecked. The unvaxed will ignore travel restrictions the same way they have ignored pleas to get vaxed and the threat of a $1000 fine is meaningless. The vaxed can take the virus with them anyway.

We need to get used to the idea of much higher numbers of infected. The only metrics that are crucial are firstly hospitalizations and secondly, but dare I say it less important, are deaths.

The number of Hospital staff refusing vaccination.
Is this 4% Nurses and Doctors, or over all staff ?

Does it include orderlies, cleaners, laundry, janitors, security, managers, admin ?
Odd techs and trades that are direct employs as opposed to contractors ?

Ignore 4%. It was later cleared up as incorrect and can't go back and clarify. it's closer to 1.3/1.4

I personally know one senior hospital doctor who has refused the jab. It's not uncommon.

AU: cases, hospitalizations, ICU, all drop AFTER opening up. fingers crossed ... fresh Pfizer ...

https://www.covid19data.com.au/hospitalisations-icu

Ok, so I looked up tests, and in both states they are roughly consistent, so tests are stable, cases are trending down, etc. As NSW is highly vaccinated and Victoria a little less so, that means that the vaccines are reducing hospitalisation and ICU. Case numbers are still very high, so assume they are due to the unfettered spread by the vaccinated and unvaccinated people. And that most of the hospital and ICU cases are the epidemic of the unvaccinated. Also, added immunity from the massive numbers of past cases that they let rip when opening up with low vaccination rates, and subsequent deaths. But hey, they got freedom, as did the virus. Seems more a case of letting Covid rip through the people, then saying now hey what a good job we did??

You're using "massive numbers of past cases" to describe the fewer than 1% of NSW residents have had Covid since the start of the pandemic in 2020 with 79k cases in total from a population of roughly 8.2m?

To me "massive numbers of past cases is countries where 15-20% + of the population have officially tested positive for Covid. We know in England that close to 15% of the population have had Covid officially but we know true case numbers are well in excess of that.

1% offers virtually zero added background natural immunity to a population. Even if you're going to argue "oh they will have missed cases" and you double their total case numbers you're still going to be under 2% of their total population.

One of the not so widely appreciated impacts of the pandemic (at least not widely appreciated here in NZ where we have no experienced the heavy death toll experience in many countries)

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2786533

Thousands of US Youths Cope With the Trauma of Losing Parents to COVID-19

"... estimated that 142,637 US youths lost a parent, custodial grandparent, or grandparent caregiver to COVID-19 from April 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021" (includes direct and indirect deaths such as due to difficulties accessing health care)

"... unlike other mass casualty events such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks, the threat from COVID-19 is unrelenting ... 'Those disasters were over in a few hours, whereas COVID-19 has lasted 18 months with no end in sight, ...' ”

I'd consider cases of 2000+ daily to be massive. If its not, then maybe our daily cases shouldn't even make the news?  NZ is not that much smaller, so yes, 2000+ is massive

EDIT

Fair enough re natural Immunity
