Is there a reason why they weren't already signed up for saliva testing since they are eligible?

It's so much easier just spitting in the tube and dropping it in a collection box.

They are - but the nearest facility that does it is unavailable today...

Always pays to have a stack of saliva tubes on hand to make this so much easier since all the dropoff locations are 24/7!

"I got sick. Can I have the vaccine now?"

Another sob story of someone who was misguided. I hope it's a lesson for him but seriously, will this help others?

The way I read it, he's not even happy to isolate another week because he'll miss Christmas. So not sure what to make of it.

Im so over it. I am slowly discarding or more so, distancing friendships. If I raised what you said to a mate, ill get a long list of excuses. What do you do? Tell him he's an idiot and so his his partner who is also lovely? I will stand by my principles and if someone doesnt like that, thats fine. I was at my wonderful Step Dads death bed. Had a coffee with my brother in law. Hows Covid for you? He is a great person. He laughed. It makes me feel, well I and you are good people but we stand on the opposite sides of the fence, good luck. If he or they were at a bus stop and its just idle chat, but its family or awesome friends. Thats what gets me down.

Watching AUS news tonight. Seems that the restrictions are ramping up. Boosters are reduced to 5 menthe, then soon, its 4 months, then its 3 months. It appears that 3 months is ideal but capacity means that the gap has to be stretched out

4 LOI in my patch

And the locals are still vocals with lines such as 'i thought it was only the clean ones leaving akl' 'i bet they were jabbed, yet they segregate the unvax' etc.

Yes love. Just like how if you have 100 people. 94 of them wearing seatbelts..and 6 not. And request they crash into a wall randomly. There is more likely to be someone with a belt on that hits it. And may be hurt. But the ones without will be worse off.

I saw a clickbait style headline that children's admissions in the two year old and younger are significantly more with omicron.
Claims of 88 infant admissions in the UK in 24 hours, a record for their pandemic. However there was a claim infant admissions in South Africa were elevated with an increased mortality.

I have not been able to confirm these claims. I am away from home for Christmas so restricted to my phone.

Something to keep an eye on, I know there was a claim of increased paediatric admissions in South Africa but it was clouded by incidental cases, kids already in hospital for something else.

Another headline reports more than two thousand flights cancelled globally due to omicron internationally.

The UK is expected to have 10% of the workforce off sick in 7 days and France are in a monster wave that has now pushed hospital capacity to the red line.

Lots of un substantiated headlines on a Christmas day, the worst being a claim of record infant admissions in 24 hours with 88 kids in hospital in a day.

So those are the click bait Christmas headlines of fear on a Christmas day, I am interested in seeing these disproved, specifically the kids stuff, because if that is not accurate, it just shows what lows the media can reach at the most inappropriate time of the year.

Where did those numbers come from? Their official figure was 765 new cases today for a total of 2147 active cases with 5 in hospital.

It would be very interesting to see what the vaccination status of the cases in OZ is... But I have a nasty feeling that we are seeing Omicron infect large numbers of vaccinated people...

Giving a very strong indicator that Omicron is going to seriously screw up NZ if it gets in... We should be using every day we have without it to boost as many people as possible.

.. but instead we appear to be sleep walking to a potential disaster by expecting MIQ to save us.... (eventually Omicron will get in)

Total QLD cases over the last two weeks is only ~2,130.  Current official figures reported today are as per Steve's post, except 'Current hospitalisations', which are given as 123 (up 72 over the last 7 days)

NSW data.

I still think we need to wait until about the 1st of jan before we can extract meaningful data from this.

Rapidly increasing numbers in hospital are a concern.

At least the 1st of Jan indeed, NSW numbers have stalled like a long weekend.
New Year will be a stall too.
Also, I wonder at how recent these samples were taken, we may even see another dip in the coming day.

New Zealand experts seem to be saying we should have a pretty full view of all of it come the end of Jan.

By then this wave will have peaked? So many people disagree on these points/to be expected this is all new.

Another week should give us a heap of info for our omicron response, just by looking at the NSW numbers. If their case numbers look to have peaked, and hospital load is manageable, it means we don't have much to fear from omicron. But if their hospitals are getting highly loaded, it means we omicron is going to cause major issues for NZ.
