Out of interested does anyone know how many Rapid Tests NZ has on order?

I know we got 300k in October and the last figure I think I heard in a press release was we have 150K arriving on a monthly basis ,
(Not sure in this though)

You would have to assume if this is all we have we going to be way short of what we need.

zocster: Well, after reading so many things wrong with Pfizer, I went and gotten me on the Astra vaccine, as we now have choices. I hope the novavax is released sooner than later so my children can also comply.

Based on my reading Pfizer is the safest for my family. Now that under 11 is approved in NZ, I'll be very happy to see my child vaccinated to reduce risk when visiting older members of our family and reduce risk for education staff. I think our health director and our government have done an excellent job there.

quickymart:

What if Novavax is never approved (or made available) here? What then?

Also 17 cases today is a good trend to see, ie, downwards.

Testing rates yesterday were pretty low ( ~10K) also a number of the earlier days with 30-60 cases had some pretty big connected groups testing positive in the Waikato and BoP...

TBH ATM I'm more worried about the high numbers of positive cases turning up at MIQ -

I'm guessing at least 50% (or more) will turn out to be OCron

zocster: Me and my wife going for our second jab on Tuesday next week. I am not giving my children the pfizer. I still want grandkids. So from what I had read and the government already signed a deal with novavax, so will go that direction.

I'm not aware of any reason that a vaccine would cause infertility as you are suggesting. Can you tell me how you came to this conclusion?

Just the time to test this, it has not been proven either way. So I would rather be safe than sorry. 2 years is not enough time for a trial.

You might want to rethink that. Just because the government signed purchase agreements for Novavax does not mean Novavax will be used. Novavax in particular is still in the approval process with more data being gathered and requested from the manufacturer.

This is from December ... but the MoH said similar things about having lots of PPE and masks at the beginning of the Outbreak, and there were still issues with them filtering out to the Frontlines.

"The ministry has 1.5 million rapid antigen tests in its national central supply, in addition to those it has sent out.
"Further deliveries of 1.5 million per month are in place for the first half of next year."

Sorry but you are locked out of this discussion now. We can't have anti-vax non-sense in here.

Immunity and fertility systems are so far apart it's hard for me to understand how anyone would think there's even a potential issue there.

2 years is fine if you have 100's of million $ thrown at you instead of the usual method of spending years trying to raise money for trials which is what usually happens and why it took years to get a vaccine to market . nothing to do with time.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Scientists in Japan working on lifetime Covid vaccine since 2020. Based on the very successful smallpox vaccine:

Japan Times: Soon after the pandemic began, in early 2020, Michinori Kohara, emeritus investigator at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science, wondered if it was possible to develop a vaccine based on the tried and tested smallpox vaccine — which helped the world eradicate the deadly disease. The vaccinia virus used in the smallpox vaccine is a subject he has worked on for over three decades, and Kohara knows firsthand how significant a vaccine that gives strong protection for life can be.

The vaccinia virus used in the smallpox vaccine is a subject he has worked on for over three decades, and Kohara knows firsthand how significant a vaccine that gives strong protection for life can be.

But ...

Domestic drugmaker Nobelpharma Co. is set to conduct first and second phases of clinical trials of Kohara’s vaccine in Japan within the first half of 2023 on 150 to 200 volunteers, including those who have experienced infections and fully vaccinated individuals. If efficacy and safety are confirmed, the final phase clinical trial is set to start immediately afterward, with commercialization targeted for 2024 at the earliest, he says.

One of the biggest hurdles for the vaccine is securing the several tens of billions of yen needed to conduct the last clinical trial, as Kohara says Nobelpharma cannot fund it alone. Although the government has allocated more than ¥100 billion to subsidize large-scale clinical trials by domestic drugmakers, there has been no plan to subsidize the project’s clinical trials as Nobelpharma and the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science have no prior experience of commercializing a vaccine, Kohara said.

Not only a long way down the track but also some significant hurdles,  financial and otherwise

Plus multiple other groups around the world also in search of the holy grail.

...

Oops, meant to quote part of my earlier post but accidentally edited it.  Had to reconstruct so may now be slightly different..

zocster: I've just made the decision to go the other direction. Few papers like here, here and here suggests Astra is better.

The second two links news articles were interesting. The idea that AZ may offer longer protection seems to be based on inference rather than direct evidence. It would be nice if it's true. I'm sure there are some things to learn there. Also note even if it's found to be longer lasting this will not change the fact that AZ is marginally less effective as far as anyone knows.

The other interesting part was a small number of vaccine hesitant in Australia putting off getting AZ and waiting for the Pfizer jab instead : )
