JPNZ:

Deadliest day so far in NSW today..

NSW = 25,168 cases and 46 deaths

Victoria = 18,167 cases and 20 deaths

Yesterdays numbers (not reported for Jan 21st yet)

Queensland = 16,812 and 9 deaths

South Australia = 3,777 cases and 11 deaths

Age and vaccination breakdown of deaths in NSW

From NSW CHO Kerry Chant...

"There was one person aged in their 30s, one was in their 40s, four were in the 50s, eight people were in their 60s, 12 people were in their 70s, 13 people were in their 80s and seven people were in their 90s.

"One person had received three doses of the COVID vaccine, 29 had received two doses, up to two people had received one dose and 14 were not vaccinated. Of the seven people who died under the age of 65, all were men. Two received two doses of the COVID vaccine and five men were not vaccinated, including the men in their 30s and 40s. And both of the men who were vaccinated had significant underlying health conditions. Three of the five men who were not vaccinated also had significant underlying health conditions."

Second day in a row of decreasing Hospital load numbers in NSW.

I'm going to call it, and say they have passed the peak of their omicron wave.

Deaths will lag hospitalization numbers somewhat, so today's 46 (wow) is not necessarily their peak.

DS248:

cruxis:

Quite interesting, If a bunch of kiwis stuck in Austrialia pooled their money, charted a private plane, or even a ship. Landed in NZ without MIQ vouchers, could they be deported back to Aussie? Surprised it has not been atempted yet.

Already been done by boat (eg. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/oct/27/a-catamaran-and-a-plan-desperate-to-get-home-new-zealanders-set-sail-across-the-tasman).

Not such a biggie, much of their isolation time spent on board during the trip or holding off Opua (border customs clearance is at Opua)

Boat has been done a bunch of times (often as crew for one way trips on boats that need transferred to NZ anyway).

I think a charter plane is a bit more tricky, assume commercial charter flight companies need to operate by similar rules as commercial airlines with regards to arrival approvals, potential fines etc.

Although the Eligible pop for boosters starts to really ramp in Feb,  which is 4 months after October, so we really need to get more then 40K per day (which is only 1% daily of the total eligible 18+ cohort ( about 3.9M)

11K paediatric doses is better thou,  eligible pop is ~470K  ( I think) so that's 2-3% daily... )

Looking at the traffic light thing, it seems to really not have a lot of differences between each level.

I can't really see it being terribly effective in comparison to what we had before.

What we had before was for elimination. Latterly it was for suppression so we can get jabbed for the time when we have no choice but to live with it.

I did read that while there will be no lockdowns, its possible that mask rules and numbers on premises rules could be tightened in an Omicron outbreak. Before it was to keep it out, then its to keep it out long enough. Soon, when it rages here and we have no choice to live with it, its to keep hospital beds under control, which if 95% of eligibles are vaxxed, and as kids 5-11 are now added, we will have a LOT of coverage where the vax heavily improves the hospital/ICU outcomes

"Today the Ministry of Health is reporting one new possible Omicron case in Auckland. The person works at Auckland Airport and they are not linked to previously reported Auckland Omicron cases.

The worker’s infection was detected in a routine surveillance test taken on 18 January and a positive result was returned yesterday."

(some talk of a $1000 fine - like a parking fine with no conviction against your name for turning up without a MIQ booking, but small fry really).

Plus the charge for 10 days in MIQ. I think for a family staying in 1 room that's around $5000 but I could be wrong.

I think will all the media around this in the last couple of days it's likely more will start to try it, especially if the border closure is extended. The only real way to stop it would be to stop all flights transiting New Zealand.

As for the cost, if you don't have a voucher and are being put in MIQ involuntarily, I am not sure they would be able to enforce a charge.

This could become a real problem

The AVs are really loving this 'They had SIGNIFICANT underlying health issues'

To them. Translation = 'they probably died anyway and just got marked down as having it post mortem like in the UK'

History never repeats file...

From 1625 Wm. Cranshaw  During Plague in Britain

"Abhor more than poison wicked opinions that the pestilence is not infectious,
that each can do whatever he wants, that avoiding persons and places and
diligent use of means for preservation are needless and of no use..."

51min 55sec into this Mayo Clinic hosted presentation
Year Three of COVID-19: Harsh Truths, Realities, and Glimmers of Hope
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32IAD5NyqWg

Of course we know so much about what we are up against.
Knowledge that behavior does make a big difference.
Good knowledge of masks, and a workable vaccination to deal with disease.
Plus all the care, treatment, technology.

Same problem with stubbornness.

The transit loophole to get into NZ is looking to get messier.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/news/300500844/zero-tolerance-for-kiwis-trying-to-enter-country-as-bogus-transit-passengers

"Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) has “zero tolerance” for Kiwis attempting to get into the country by posing as transit passengers – but an immigration lawyer say’s he can’t see any legal reason why they shouldn’t be able to do so."

Unclear what crime MIQ is suggesting would be committed, but they are threatening referrals to the police.

My take is that the we are likely to get a flood of people exploiting the loophole now it has been well publicized. Plenty are desperate enough to carry fairly significant penalties even if one were applied.

Puts the government in a tricky spot. Current approach of stopping people getting on planes to act as a barrier to enter NZ has now broken. And there is a real risk that MIQ could be overwhelming by transit passengers entering NZ.

Could be fixed by a law change to allow citizens to be refused entry to NZ (but that law change would breach international travel Norms, and would need to over-ride section 18 of the bill or rights act, so may be quite controversial).

Could be fixed, by banning transits through Auckland.

Could be fixed by passing some law that made it illegal to attempt to enter NZ without a MIQ booking with a decent prison term or similar as the penlity.

Or the government could hope the MIQ system holds up for a week or two, and if at that point omicron has a foothold in NZ, then moves to living with omicron and allows Self isolation for returning citizens.

[Edit] A law professor reads the legislation such that their are fairly big penalties if done intentionally:
