Geektastic: Just. Shut. The. Border.

That way we can all get on with normal life whilst the scientists develop a vaccine that is even better.

The way the border is now appears to place 5+ million at significant risk merely for the benefit of a very few.

That's a pretty extreme suggestion.

A closed border would see see NZ in major strife fairly soon. Fuel & Pharmaceuticals would become in short supply pretty fast. And with no physical exports income would be slashed massively, costing our economy heaps. To bad tonga - can't send aid, or border is closed...

New Zealanders offshore could end up effectively stateless, and there is a real risk that countries wound stop allowing New Zealanders in, given there is no way to deport them.

And it's not like new vaccines are going to be ready in a couple of weeks. Pfizer CEO said on Jan 10 that their forthcoming omicron-specific vaccine would be ready in march. Then comes the approval processes, getting stock etc. Seems to take months between vaccines being offered in the USA and here. And having a omicron / influenza / RSV wave hit us in winter would be bad, so we would need to hold out to next summer before re-opening.

We are already on thin ice. Emirates was running a near freight only 777 to chc. It was silently withdrawn on Nov 30. We now have Singapore and the AirNZ propped up LA and asia mixed freight occasional flights only

Others are considering withdrawal from akl too which will really screw us. NZ is not high on the money maker list after 2 years of limiting passenger movement.

Unscheduled PM announcement at 11am, so we know what that means. The official Omicron outbreak

I've sent the wife to the supermarket as soon as I saw the unplanned conference.

We aren't bulk buying, just doing our regular weekly shop. Don't want to br stuck in line for hours and hours after the conference ends.

Unscheduled press conference by the PM at 11am

Edit:

@tdgeek beat me to it

Ive read that 5 flights are LOI's, so aside from some known or possible Omicron being in a few centres including SI, the flights are probably the largest concern, One Bunnings store in one location is one thing but 5 national flights is a few steps worse potentially

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Yep, particularly as in Red Light (assuming that might happen) still means all retail is still open, its not a toilet paper lockdown thing now.

@tdgeek, totally right. Unfortunately, I sense people will go nuts and bulk buy again.

We've seen during this pandemic how humans don't learn from even the recent past.

Food and supplies will not run out if we don't buy for a family of 100 when we only have 4 in the house!

What was actually reported was:

"The coronavirus will eventually become “endemic” in New Zealand, and there may be “significant” changes to the borders in the first half of 2022, Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins says.

Oh if only we could go back to January 2020 knowing what we know how, things may have been a little different.
