But that's my issue really, many people are indeed really afraid of Omicron yet wouldn't be concerned about the flu at all even though the stats seem to indicate that the flu has a higher mortality rate. Based on the Australian calculator I linked earlier, even if I contract Omicron I have only a 1 in 62,000 chance of dying. I'm not in a high risk group, but I'm not in the lowest risk group either.

I think people became so afraid (perhaps rightfully so) of the original Covid and Delta, that they can't let that fear go, even if it's no longer warranted.

Is there yet any evidence of long Covid resulting from Omicron?

Many people do care about getting the flu, and is infact why we have the flu vaccine. Many people don't get the flu, or not very often as it is not as infectious as omicron. Flu vaxs would help to keep death number from the flu down, as well as demand on the medical system. The issue could be that we may get more flu and colds coming into NZ with NZ being shut down, and more people coming in and not going into MIQ.  I undertand in the UK they have had a lot of other flu and cold illnesses this year which have been worse than other years.

On the other hand, if you get infected in the current environment, how would you know which variant do you have?

True.

I was on their Zello channel and recorded this: "hey team, is this true? We've just been down to the medic tent and they've said that government, ah, parliament grounds are putting out radiation waves out [sic] so be careful as they have high amounts of people and young children coming through with migraines and ringing ears."

This is one time I really, really wish I was in Wellington, so I could do the following:

Grab the most sci-fi-y test gear you've got, dress up in a hazmat suit with mask and dark glasses to be as unrecognisable as possible, then walk around the periphery of the "protest" pointing the test gear at them and having it make beeping noises. When asked, say you're from the UN's Soros Division and you're just running our 5G orthogonalisation gear, nothing to worry about. Look up at the tops of surrounding buildings, particularly the Freyberg building if it's visible, and nod occasionally.

They're a bunch of conspiracy-theory nutters, give them a conspiracy to go nuts over.

I'm not just suggesting this as a joke, someone who's local should really do this and similar things. If they want conspiracies, give them some, and it'll take their focus away from harassing others.

An old Freeview satellite on a late-model black SUV would be a giggle until someone dragged you from it and caved your head in.

Well it's true - called Cellphone Services. Unfortunately only 4G+ not 5G so can not blame that for ringing ears /s

There are masks and then there are masks. Prof Baker has said that cloth masks offer little and surgical ones aren't much better, and he was wanting the government to require people wore proper masks, not cloth ones. They did change the rules recently to stop people using bandanas and t-Shirts to cover their mouth but barely.. You need N95 and properly fitted to get some protection.  WHen I went to get my boaster at the DHBs centre, I was told to take off my N95 mask and they gave me a surgical mask instead and this was a requirement. Really stupid.

Good luck in getting that unless the government is going to provide everyone with a supply of N95 masks and people wear them all the time apart from sleeping and eating.

So to stop the flu we need to mandate the flu jab and have MIQ over the winter months for all arrivals.

Can't keep doing this for ever, eventually people here will be relying on vaccines rather than the body to do the trick and this could have adverse effects

Yup, simple solution. They're just making sure everyone meets a minimal standard so they don't have to argue the toss over a million different oddball masks out there. To make things easier, get elastic neck straps that clip on to the ear-cutters on the surgical masks so you can wear it as a neck-strap mask rather than an ear-cutting mask, you can get them from the usual suspects on eBay and Ali.

Flu tracking stats for the week ending 2022/02/13 thanks to the flu tracking project

It's a pity they dropped the 2018 data. It had a similar trend to 2019. Minimal flu since the start of COVID-19. Will be interesting to watch this over winter with the borders opening.

So the promised testing capacity of 70K tests a day falls apart when you have multiple positives in batches that needs to be re-run.

It's just a big impressive number but totally impractical when you have an outbreak that would actually trigger that kind of demand.

I'm not totally sure on the specifics, but a few days ago when questioned on testing capacity/delays in getting results, it was something along the lines of 26,000 or 27,000 individual tests could be processed per day (not sure now if this was just in Auckland or all of NZ). Anyway the problem area at this point is Auckland and why RATs are now being used there.

I would imagine that batching no longer works as the positive case numbers go up.

For those talking about how mild Omicron is... Who is dying of COVID amid omicron surge and widespread vaccine availability? - ABC News

As of Wednesday, the nation is reporting 2,200 new COVID daily deaths on average. While this is lower than the 3,400-peak seen last winter, it's still three times higher than the number of average fatalities recorded two months ago.

With around 60% of Americans fully vaccinated during the most recent wave, daily deaths from omicron are still relatively high, which begs the question: Who is dying of COVID-19 when there is such strong vaccination coverage?

Infectious disease doctors say it is still mainly unvaccinated people, most of whom are in their 30s and 40s with no underlying health issues, who are dying.

"The vast majority of patients -- anywhere from 75% and greater -- we're seeing is primarily unvaccinated individuals who are getting COVID and wind up in the hospital severely ill and are currently dying," Dr. Mahdee Sobhanie, an assistant professor of internal medicine and an infectious diseases physician at The Ohio State University, told ABC News.

A small percentage of deaths are among fully vaccinated (and boosted) people who are either older or have preexisting conditions that increase their risk of dying.

Nearly two years into the pandemic, unvaccinated Americans are still making up the majority of COVID deaths.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that during the first week of December -- when the omicron variant began taking hold -- unvaccinated people were dying at a rate of 9 per 100,000.

By comparison, fully vaccinated people were dying at a rate of 0.4 per 100,000, meaning unvaccinated people were 20 times more likely to die of the virus, according to an ABC News analysis. State-level data, from California to Mississippi, shows similar results.

"We started [in 2020] with the most vulnerable deaths among the elderly," Dr. David Zonies, associate chief medical officer for critical care services at Oregon Health & Science University, told ABC News. "As we transitioned into different variants, the age demographic shifted. Now we see very young people dying. It's around 30-year-olds and 40-year-olds."
