Otagolad: Biggest question on the booster is when are we getting the bivalent booster - waste of time (mostly) giving people a Delta booster. Labour were full on to the point of ridiculousness and now they’re “meh, good luck everyone, we’ve wasted all the money on PR doctors and analysts so it’s up to you guys now”.

This was tweeted by the official "Unite against COVID-19" account last night, and then promptly deleted.... so its coming just not quite yet

Note : The booster is not Delta it's based on 'original' stabilized spike.
It's the same as your first dose.

Re. Original vaccine vs bivalent vaccine.

Seems to be no reason for consternation original is pretty much still doing the job.

In the interview below its discussed that there was little difference between an extra dose of original vaccine or the bivalent.
Both boosted response about the same.

What seems to be a big difference is spacing the results with >= 8 months spacing much better,
by about 1.5 to 2x , vs just 2-3 week spacing.
https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7148e1.htm#:~:text=At%202%E2%80%933%20months%20and,aged%20%E2%89%A565%20years%2C%20respectively.

TWiV Special: Bivalent boosters with Paul Offit
People who are or have been Professors of Virology with deep experience discussing
https://www.microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-special-offit/

About 5.40 in they talk about a couple of comparative studies on difference.

Certainly, TwiV are strong about vaccine aims are first to deal with disease.
Not to necessarily to eliminate all infection or minor symptoms all the time.
Polio vaccine deals with the disease polio but does not 100% 'eliminate' the virus.

People more on public health side would prefer absolute virus suppression to stop transmission etc.
HPV vaccine seems to be gold standard for this, but it's entirely different type of virus.

Being cheeky bypassing the unlock req. But just noticed this had updated on 8th.

This release removes diary uploads and other features which are no longer operationally supported.
Bluetooth tracing is still running

Australia and other places reporting large purchases of Panadol, Vitamins etc.
People are buying to ship to China.
https://www.sbs.com.au/language/chinese/en/article/concerned-family-members-bulk-buy-paracetamol-amid-chinas-covid-spike/h9v2rgd11

Demand is very large there and even with a lot of products being made in China there seems to be a critical shortage.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/20/world/asia/china-covid-shortages.html

I think we have the answer Omicron is not so mild if you don't have 3 spaced out shots of best vaccine you can get.
It has been thought that many older people (The most vulnerable) may not have got full 2 or 3 shots of Sinovac.
Various reasons, mistrust etc.

Sinovac old style inactivated virus vaccine does not seem to work well as modern platforms.
Complex spike seems to be too damaged from inactivation to give immune system a good template to work with.

With all that time to prepare for opening, and it is very sad that system has been found wanting.

She probably means all the "experts" she Googled online who simply told her what she wanted to hear. Hell, I'm probably an "expert" too - I'm on the internet as well!

Batman:

they could just use Western medicine you know

They do.

The top people got Pfizer, the rest got Sinovac. Not saying that Sinovac is poor, but you have to ask

Leo Tolstoy. Everyone is equal but some are more equal than others.

I think that's Orwell...

I was curious about the sinoVax. How do you know it's worse than Pfizer and how do you know the top people in China get Pfizer?

The clinical trial data is published. Sinovac was around 50% efficacy.

Pfizer in China.
Germany just flew in Pfizer, but China only allows it to be used on German citizens.
https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/biontech-pfizer-covid-vaccine-china-germans-95650273
""
Some 20,000 Germans in China stand to benefit from the agreement, Hebestreit said, and “at the same time, we are working to make it possible for (other) foreigners, expatriates to benefit from such a step.”
""
Not sure if this made the news internally though.

Its rumored that there is vaccine tourism for those that can get from China to Macau or Hong Kong where mRNA is available?

Hong Kong appeared to discourage non-China vaccines, early on.
I know someone whose relatives in Hong Kong had their doctor discouraging western vaccines heavily as not made for Chinese.
Eventually they got their Pfizer top ups after Sinovac by being persistent.

Sinovac seems to wilt in protection against serious symptoms, hospitalization etc with Delta and later variants.
Study Oct/Nov 2021
https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/covid-19-vaccines-sinovac-pfizer-moderna-singapore-study-2625511

Aug 2021 Ok antibody tests are not full story, but...
https://www.asiaone.com/singapore/singapore-residents-2-sinovac-doses-are-finding-they-need-pfizer-boost

Singapore now requires 4 doses of Sinovac minimum but recommends a boost be Pfizer / Moderna for best protection.
Um if you have to have Sinovac at all, mRNA full course is the standard program.

You have low trust, and brutality of measures that rubbed people the wrong way, so vaccination rate especially in older is poor.
It fed antivax sentiment, last control I have of my life.
So getting 3 or 4 doses Sinovac into many is really hard apparently.
Bringing population along with you is 'a thing' which we mostly achieved.

From what I can glean from Chinese I know. YMMV
