Yes, its very sad. Covid Zero policy was out of touch, that itself caused grief, breaking doors in to take people to get tests, locked down elders dying fir other issues, then while it would be sensible to relax precautions, they never did what everywhere else did, get vaccinations up so that a release of restrictions can work. In NZ, having done the right things in the right order, we still have Covid sick day issues, with the strain on the health system (although thats been an issue of decades), and supply issues. Had China got the vaxxes where they needed to be, then their issues would be like everywhere else, manageable.

Didn't China have their own vaccines? Were they not good enough?

Sinovac isn't that great. IIRC non mRNA. Older people are lowly vaccinated, why I have no idea, I can ask my wife, who is Chinese and there at the moment, Wuhan, ironically.

Media suggests lack of trust through the harsh lockdowns. Here, "some" people didn't trust vaccinations, but that's the noisy minority. Over there, I would assume people want vaccinations for themselves, but so much lack of trust of the Administration. When you haven't turned up for testing, then your door gets broken down, not hard to see why people stay at arms length.

China Covid: experts estimate 9,000 deaths a day as US says it may sample wastewater from planes
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/dec/30/china-covid-experts-estimate-9000-deaths-a-day-as-us-says-it-may-sample-wastewater-from-planes

Wastewater sampling is looking like a technology that just keeps giving.

""
A better solution would be testing wastewater from airlines, which would offer a clearer picture of how the virus was mutating, given China’s lack of data transparency, said Dr Eric Topol, a genomics expert and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute in La Jolla, California.

Getting wastewater off planes from China “would be a very good tactic”, Topol said, adding that it was important the US upgrade its surveillance tactics “because of China being so unwilling to share its genomic data”.

Yep. But most of the rest of the world have opened up as vaccinations have allowed that. Whether incoming people from China have Covid or from Te Puke, it should be the same deal here and elsewhere. But yes, mitigate the risk if you can.

I believe the concern is around a new virulent variant coming into the country, because as we know variants are created more predominantly where the virus is ripping through the population like Delta from India and Omicron from South Africa.

Which Ministry office junior was given a copy of MS paint and told to create the "COVID-19 Response Award" lapel pin??....

IMHO its totally rubbish and likely to simply end up in sock drawers around the Nation....

This is what they came up with....

After reading that article I kind of felt the award is a bit a like having a prize for taking part, a bit like they do at schools these days. Some of the people involved were outstanding especially the medics treating those infected, particularly early on where there were no vaccines and the variants more virulent, but a lot on the recipient list were just doing a job.

What about all the people who struggled financially especially a lot of small business owners and who are still struggling today with lack of staff to run their businesses, and those workers who have to bear a very high work load due to staff shortage?

I dunno. In real life (or a photo of) it looks OK?

You wouldn't want it to be too busy imo. But in any case, I imagine it would end up in sock drawers, are people actually going to wear them around?

Yeah, looks better in real life,

I still think its a bit formal thou,  ( although it is an honour of sorts, and probably not meant for daily wear)

I though it would be more like the 1737 lapel pin I have seen quite a few in the heath sector wear on a day-to-day basis ...

But no matter, it is well deserved by everyone involved...

It's meant to be formal I think, "designed to be in keeping with the likes of military service" etc.

Makes sense

Was that a Tui moment?

The lack of transparency from China around variants, case numbers, in fact everything Covid  worries me. Having had it twice and still suffering from my last exposure 4 months ago is not great.
