trig42:

For the first time since March of 2020, worldwide daily deaths have gone below 1000 per day.

Mentioned in this article:

Covid Deaths Hurt UK, US More than Singapore or New Zealand (bloomberg.com)

Backed up by WHO graphs (graph show weekly deaths):

Bear in mind most undeveloped countries have stopped testing for and stopped counting covid.

Also bear in mind covid had taken most people it wants to take from those countries, such that the remainder have all had it and survived.

Followup - I'm inclined to think she's being a bit economical with the truth here:

Liz has her first court appearance. Predictably, she pleads not guilty pending a court date in June. Maybe "lawyer" Sue Grey will represent her, LOL.

I find it strange how the cast on her arm due to her (apparently) being "injured" disappears and reappears to suit her needs 🤔

Took a friend to a specialist's appointment at Palmy hospital yesterday, quite a few in the waiting room without masks. So much for you must wear one in healthcare facilities. Case numbers in the region are up almost 40% since last week.

Looks like countries are pulling back to targeting the at risk folk for covid vaccination. Australia's guidelines state over 65 and 18 to 64 with medical conditions placing them at risk of disease severity, the other 18 to 64 is on an individual risk benefit assessment with immunisation provider. Current Australian immunisation guidelines

The UK HSA came across my social media feed with something along the lines of "your first and second doses of covid vaccines will end for many June 30".

Health working their way back to targeting those at risk similar to flu vaccines where it's free for those most at risk and you can pay for it if you're not.

Will be interesting to see what's next but it doesn't appear it will be for the masses.

I read an update in the nzherald/stuff on one of the covid vaccine misinformation doctors peter Canaday at a tribunal hearing. It listed 4 doctors and I noted 3 are American and 1 I think was British. It really highlighted the imported nature of conspiracy thinkers. I had read the US etc were trying to influence people down under away from getting vaccinated but for some reason I looked up the origins of these docs just now and ... suddenly it all made sense. I'm sure we have some kiwis involved but 4 out of 4 in the article were imports.

I do think Americans have been hurt by corrupt companies and maybe that's led to Americans being skeptical and looking for alternative explanations at every turn, so facts for them aren't necessarily facts. They're lies with the truth to yet be uncovered. But we aren't America and we have different rules and regulations. Maybe we learn from US misfortunes. We used the mRNA vaccine but our vaccine recommendations definitely departed from theirs and I can't explain the rationale behind some US policies because they make no sense to me. Easy to lose faith in officials in that scenario.

Just trying to make sense of the nonsense. I should probably give up as it's probably an impossible goal.

for those interested WHO says covid no longer global health emergency

https://edition.cnn.com/2023/05/05/health/who-ends-covid-health-emergency/index.html

“For more than a year the pandemic has been on a downward trend,” Tedros said at a news conference Friday.

“This trend has allowed most countries to return to life as we knew it before Covid-19,” Tedros said. “Yesterday, the emergency committee met for the 15th time and recommended to me that I declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice.”

This came across my social media feed at stupid o’clock while I was still up. Interestingly they say they don’t declare the start and end of pandemics. Just the global emergency like they did with monkey pox too but thankfully we didn’t have restrictions. I didn’t watch the live feed it in its entirety.

Anyway, much of the world moved on to getting back to normal over a year ago.

So when will NZ end 7 day mandatory isolation? Which at this point I suspect many aren’t testing or isolating. Nothing to stop people isolating by choice even after the rule has gone. Otherwise I really have no idea what NZs endpoint is although there have been a number of instances where this hasn’t been obvious.

Taking just two examples employment and sport. If there's no mandatory rule - isolation won't happen in most cases

It's worth noting that WHO declared the end of the PHEIC. That's a very specific legal thing that allows (or requires) countries to take unusual steps like close/restrict borders and so forth. The  wikipedia entry is worth a read

They are not, as a consequence of this PHEIC ending, saying that COVID is over or no longer a problem.

Naturally. That would be akin to declaring that influenza is no longer a problem.

If you think everyone who has covid is isolating for 7 days, I have a bridge to sell you.

I have no statistics to back it up, but I'd be very surprised if even 50% of people that catch it a) Know that they even have it or b) bother to test so they aren't forced to stay home.

The last time I had it (or at least knew I had it), I had a slight headache, and was due to visit my elderly parents in the weekend so I tested. It was a very strong positive line on a RAT (on a Wednesday). I had no other symptoms. The next day my headache was gone. I stayed home anyway, and let work know (WFH anyway, so no time off luckily for me). never got any more symptoms, tested every day and was clear by the Saturday. I went back in to work on Monday. Technically, I broke the law by doing that but it was safe (I'd by then tested clear for three days). We need to encourage people to stay away from work if not feeling right but legislating that won't work. The extra 5 days a year of sick leave might help it.

At the very least, the mandatory isolation should be reduced to 5 days, or even changed to 'test to leave' isolation.

My parents have had Covid really bad . Bed ridden and were on antivirals, and the most ill they have been.. Only now are they getting better. They think the  caught it from someone at a hairdresser who was clearly sick from it. My dad initially had cold symptoms for a few days and told me he just had a cold. I told him to take a test and it was positive. Amazingly I never caught it off them and still never had it , at least no that I know of, but I use a mask in when going shopping.  So it can badly affect older people. THey were vaxed but hadn't had the latest booster. I had told them to get it about a month ago but they didn't.  Ironically they were too sick to go and about after the  7 day isolation period and were still testing positive, and if they did they would likely have infected other people. So the whole isolation period is highly inaccuarte

just remember you will probably still test positive after 7 days even though you are not infectious

On average once a week I walk away from a shopper in a supermarket or store with severe symptoms. Ime some people think it's just a cold or sore throat and carry on as normal could not possibly be COVID etc etc no need for a test can't be COVID...
