My parents have had Covid really bad . Bed ridden and were on antivirals, and the most ill they have been.. Only now are they getting better. They think the  caught it from someone at a hairdresser who was clearly sick from it. My dad initially had cold symptoms for a few days and told me he just had a cold. I told him to take a test and it was positive. Amazingly I never caught it off them and still never had it , at least no that I know of, but I use a mask in when going shopping.  So it can badly affect older people. THey were vaxed but hadn't had the latest booster. I had told them to get it about a month ago but they didn't.  Ironically they were too sick to go and about after the  7 day isolation period and were still testing positive, and if they did they would likely have infected other people. So the whole isolation period is highly inaccuarte

just remember you will probably still test positive after 7 days even though you are not infectious

This is not 100% true. If you test positive on a RAT you can still be infectious. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/29/health/coronavirus-testing-positive.html

More than 70% of US household COVID spread started with a child, study suggests | CIDRAP (umn.edu)

A study published yesterday in JAMA Network Open suggests that 70.4% of nearly 850,000 US household COVID-19 transmissions originated with a child.

A team led by Boston Children's Hospital researchers gave smartphone-connected thermometers to 848,591 households with 1,391,095 members, who took 23,153,925 temperature readings from October 2019 to October 2022. Fevers were a proxy for infection.

Of all readings, 57.7% were from adults. Most households (62.3%) reported temperatures from only one person, while 37.7% included multiple participants taking 51.6% of all readings. Most children were 8 years or younger (58.0%), and more females than males participated in each age group.

"More than 70% of transmissions in households with adults and children were from a pediatric index case, but this percentage fluctuated weekly," the study authors wrote. "Once US schools reopened in fall 2020, children contributed more to inferred within-household transmission when they were in school, and less during summer and winter breaks, a pattern consistent for 2 consecutive school years."

Someone in Ohio has chronic COVID-19 for the last two years.

Who in Ohio has had COVID-19 for years? The search is on (nbc4i.com)

This spring, Johnson found another cryptic in Columbus’s sewer shed. He said the same sequence appeared in Washington Court House and has a lineage that pre-dates the Delta variant, the strain most prevalent in the summer of 2021.

Johnson believes this indicates that someone has been carrying and shedding the COVID virus for more than two years. He went as far to predict that this person lives in Columbus and commutes to Washington Court House for work.

“I just know that they regularly shed into both sewer sheds often on the same day,” Johnson said.

The researcher hopes that by sharing this story, that person will come forward to help him answer a lot of important questions.

The virologist posted some comments here.

School is a sickness factory.

Virtually all our household infections over the years originated from kids bringing it home from kindy/school (including two times we got Covid)

Geektastic: Does anyone know what percentage of people in NZ have never had Covid?

Wow, I was just thinking that when I read the previous post. I had the next booster and flu jab today. They asked, I said no we haven't had Covid, same deal at the doctor. Me, wife, MIL, many seem very surprised.

I WFH, wife works from home although that business was crushed by Covid, but now picking up so she goes to the office we lease, MIL stays at home. I don't wear masks, although they do when out.

I'd wager 20%?  Just my rough guess, based on feel, not data

If someone took a survey at random workplaces (small, medium and large) that sample would give a reasonable guide. Google shows nothing that is meaningful.

If its 5% as John suggested or even 20% that I suggested (probably a bit high actually) then its herd immunity, jabs should probably stop, or be a 2 for 1 when you get the flu jab, and the news stories end. They seem to have ended anyway?

They're already currently offered as both at same time if you want/ask/book. But the focus campaign now is flu and measels.

Be nice if more realised the current booster is different makeup/helpful. We had a popup community session 2 weeks ago that ran out on Saturday and was a 40 min wait the sunday when I did.

Multiple people were all 'cant be bothered waiting, had the others' etc. While the staff said they're still jabbing and about to extend contract with measels in the firing line.
But they were offering all 3.

Myself and 3 other immediate team have still avoided.

Some people seem to be strangely resistant to it. Over many months I had numerous close contact situations as well as taking the bus to work every day, and I never got it. In the end the only thing that caused me to contract it was a wedding at which I unknowingly had a long interaction with an infected person and we were shouting at close proximity due to background noise. If that interaction had been in a more normal environment then I suspect I wouldn't have picked it up.

My theory is that there is a lot of random variability in the effectiveness of the vaccines across different individuals.
