How sick have people been on the 2nd+ time around? 4 people at my work have had it recently & have all said it was worse than the 1st time, which is a concern.

Could be the time since a booster, or has it mutated again? We don't hear anything about that any more.

Had it for the second time recently (13 months since first time, and no boosters inbetween).

It was incredibly mild this time. I only bothered to test as I had a slight headache. Tested negative 3 days later. Isolated for 7 days, but felt well from about day 3-4.

(I was pretty sick the first time for reference)

Thanks, it appears you just can't tell how you'll be affected each time. I better just keep avoiding it!!

I am a little taken aback how covid is now reported, for three years it was a big deal to have anyone die and more than a few people in hospital.

Now we get a short sentence every week, oh, 30 people died and 280 are in hospital.

30 a week is still 1500 a year, thats alot of people and likely higher then alot of other mortality causes.

i'm not surprised, its the new normal. people get used to it and go back to same old.

last figure i saw showed its the 2nd leading cause of death and well above the flu. a family member almost died from it last week, so its kinda close to home.

Not to mention all the people who have varying forms of long covid. The number 1 thing on the news is trying to save the lives of 5 people on a submarine who took an extreme risk, yet many of those that still die from Covid would still be alive if it wasn't for covid, and more was being done to reduce it's spread over winter. Humans are strange animals.

IMO if Covid hit the news more, many would be annoyed, yes, strange humans. If a teeny tiny restriction was implemented to help ease the spread over Winter, the world will end. Well, after the mass protests

What do you want the news to report? Covid is endemic and that hasn’t changed in sometime and won’t change. It’s not news.

Flu was previously 1000 / year. Car accidents 400 / year. Suicide 600 / year.

It's joined the background noise.

A significant (perhaps the most significant) factor about something being covered in the news is whether they believe it will resonate with readers...they will read it and share it with others for more views.  Regular weekly announcements about Covid aren't considered interesting news for most readers any more - unless there's a specific new discovery it would be just like reporting the number of injuries and deaths which occurred in car crashes over that week.

This also explains why we inexplicably see so much more coverage of certain news stories once they resonate with the public. Ram raids, daytime hammer thefts of jewelry stores, dirt bikers running amok in the city - the frequency of reporting doesn't necessarily relate to a massive increase in incidence - but rather the discovery that people are interested in those topics and will respond to those stories.

The biggest impact is in the collateral damage.

My 16yo is completely disengaged from school after 3 years of disruption. This is in a household that is very education centric. Can't imagine what it is like in tens of thousands of other households. Add this to the dumbing down of our education system over decades and we are looking at a population that is becoming less productive, not more, over future decades.

The public health system from primary care on down is in disarray. People are getting sick and not getting treated or treated far too late to prevent serious illness or worse. Mortality from this can never be calculated or counted but if it could be, it would make COVID itself look like a minor issue.

I'm very sorry to hear that, sounds terrible.

I'm lucky my kids are young enough to have bounced back from the impact of social isolation and disruption.

As I've said before, I was fully supportive of the initial health response, but the final 4+ month lockdown when a vaccine was generally available was a joke and incredibly harmful. The lockdown in August 2023 should have been for a maximum of 8 weeks to give everyone eligible a chance to get vaccinated - by and large that is what happened, by mid-October everyone who wanted two doses of the vaccine had been able to obtain them. Extending the lockdown to December was ridiculous.

Time to uninstall the COVID tracer app then. No more Bluetooth tracking.
