When did supermarkets stop selling methylated Spirits?

It may just be New World?
Pak n sav and Countdown both sell it.
Though it sold out last lockdown. Ditto Bunnings and Mitre10

Methylated spirits is a great sanitiser. Coloured ethanol.
No longer made with methanol. Too many derros dying from drinking it, even after filtering it thru a loaf of bread to remove the bittering agent.

I think I now see why both meths and bread have sold out.....

(/jk I hope)

NW Wigram Arrived before opening (@ 0730) as usual.

No queues at all. (Even on leaving)

Usual shoppers at that hour.

Limits on flour, bread, soap etc again.

Had some flour and plenty of bread.

All staff wearing masks and gloves. About 10-20% of customers wearing masks.

Apparently queues etc died after the 1730hrs announcement of staying at Level 2 outside Auckland bought some "normality" back!

(Couplands removed their limits last night)

A semi-normal day shopping.

I went into New World Paremata early this morning and everything was pretty normal apart from a few signs limiting quantities for purchases of flour, toilet paper, etc.

The prime minister mentioned a couple of days ago that Foodstuffs have a whole lot of masks flowing through their supply chain but I couldn't find any in that particular store.

My son did the supermarket shopping on Wednesday night under level 3 after the mad panic from the previous night and that morning had subsided. He said it was reasonably quiet. No shortages, and he came home with pasta and toilet paper and everything else on this list.

We got masks a few weeks ago.

Went into my local New World last night and it was as it had been during the last Level 2; queue to get in at 2m distances, someone at the door to squirt gel on your hands, no bags allowed in the store, certain places to stand when unloading a trolley etc

This afternoon they had got rid of the queue, the person at the door, bags were allowed etc ..

And I don't get what changed between 7pm and 12noon for the reduction in "security"

This lockdown the supermarkets have been much better than last time. Most times of most days I drive past supermarkets, the queues are either small and moving fast, or there aren't any. I do my shopping off-peak (late at night) which has the benefit that it's almost guaranteed you'll get in quickly and that it's not very full, but the downside of there almost never being bread (though it's improving). It's alarming the number of staff and shoppers not using masks or trying to allow distance though.

We are trying to do a balance of online shops vs in-person shops to minimize the time spent in-store, for dry goods, cleaning products and stuff you don't want to make a personal choice on (like produce), which makes the process quite seamless. Kudos to Countdown for their process which sends you a text when it's ready for pickup, with a link to let them know you are on your way and another click to let them know when you arrive. My last pickup took around 2 minutes.

One downside, is that the website doesn't have all the items being sold online. I have been looking for a couple of things in particular, none to be found online, but were in stock in store.

I shop at PaknSave GI. Last week, Monday the 10th and Saturday the 15th, maybe 20-25% of shoppers wore masks.

Then, scary news about someone with Covid-19 attending PaknSave GI.

This week, about 90% were wearing masks.

Over the last week, the number of staff at this New World wearing masks as steadily decreased.

I wonder if this is a side effect of "the South Island is COVID free"

Moving away from supermarkets and onto exercise...my wife and I went for a nice bike ride in Orewa yesterday.

Not a mask in sight (as you'd expect outdoors with people keeping away from each other).

Well my South Auckland shop at Countdown was a bit strange.
I think I only saw 2 Countdown employees wearing masks , and only about 2/3 of customers.
Wonder if Countdown has stopped , or did they ever give Masks free to their employees ?
Plus the odd person with the nose free mask technique, why bother ?

Our local Countdown is a very masky affair.

I went to New World near my in-laws and I was the only one in a mask!

Really changes from region to region.

To branch slightly out into public transport, today's train from Upper Hutt to Wellington had about 1/4 to 1/3 wearing masks (myself included) even though they are no longer "mandatory".

Yesterday's quick visit to the supermarket on the way home there were only myself and one other that I noted wearing masks.  That said, I've only been wearing mine at the supermarket if it's a visit after I get off the train and I just don't take it off.  For a normal shop, I haven't been bothering so much.

I've noticed a real decline in mask-wearers everywhere in my local area (North Shore Auckland).

I am starting to feel like a bit of a social pariah when I wear one anywhere but the supermarket...

Maybe so, but what's more important to you?  Your health and wellbeing or what others think of you?

In reality though, I suspect very few people really think anything of people wearing masks now.  While it's not an ingrained thing here yet, it's no longer "odd".
